At least the mom is live and well. After she is mentally stable and has found a way to cope with what she has done, she is still going to be able to have a relationship with her son. I think when they can finally get to that point, they are gonna be able to recover from this, getting support from one another.

The its difficult for the Mental Health system to fail somebody when then don't seek help or attend appointments. He criticized the president and the university had a lot of student who supported the president's party so they started beating him and eventually his body couldn't endure the pain and he died . That university is the most famous university in Bangladesh , and has a reputation of only admitting brilliant students . The fact that all these brilliant student who had a great future ahead killed a person for stating his opinion , that makes us rethink about the education system and are we really teaching people to be a good person or just preparing them for money making?

My birth mother had schizophrenia. I ended up in hospital on several occasions after she would attack me during these episodes when I was about 3 and 4 years old. I was eventually adopted and have had a wonderful life since 💕

Australians get huge welfare, more than if she worked. Its common that psychotic breaks can happen to 3% of pot smokers if they suddenly stop. Why the fuck would an unmarried, unemployed pot smoking woman keep having kids when she can't give them opportunity. In Australia many think it's ok to be totally supported by the government, as Australia give best welfare in the world. She would have got weekly more than an average man gets going to work, plus a free house. That's why she could sit and smoke dope all day. My nephew snapped 3 days after quitting pot. I feel so sad for everyone: the mother, children, and older son. Can't even imagine how strong you'd have to be to survive this event. Mental illness can be terrifying to experience and, while the mother did a terrible thing while out of her mind, I really do wish her a solid recovery, strong support, and the chance for a better life. Her son as well. It's a difficult case. Not in terms of finding out what happened, but in the realization that everyone is a victim here. We are culturally and socially prepped to see things in terms of good guys and bad guys. It's easier when there's someone to definitively blame.

I'm a Cairns local, have been all my life. I was starting high school when this case happened and a few years after the killings, when they demolished the house, we would drive past where it used to be on the bus and I'd look out the window at all the stuffed animals and toys that the community put there as a memorial and it always hurt my heart so much looking at them. No child deserves it, the system definitely failed her.

A guy from my distant family had an schizophrenic episode and thought of his kid as a lamb he needed to slaughter, he went to get the kitchen knife to do it. Luckily people caught on to him and immediately intervened but I mean it's such a scary f up situation. He's been hospitalised and the girl doesn't have any traumas luckily. She was really young.

I hate he's gone but I'm also relieved he is no longer suffering. It's an awful mental disease that many people don't understand.

Last night was a very hard night but I know Jacob would want me to at least attempt participating in life... I planted a sapling with his ashes and the branches are growing... I cut about 18 inches of my hair off and am going to make tiny braids to intertwine as the branches grow so I'll be with him. Until he was 3-4 years old I would have to lay my hair on his pillow for him to fall asleep on it. He would be 30 years old on August 13. My hair is my birthday gift to him. God I miss him.

It’s good to see cases like this covered. When speaking of her presentation and diagnosis, she “relapsed” in her schizophrenia. I wouldn’t call it a “schizophrenia/schizophrenic episode” it would usually be called a “psychotic episode” whether the diagnosis is schizophrenia or psychosis. I work in mental health so I just wanted to put this view across. Thank you for covering a case regarding mental health so sensitively.

At times referred to as a psychotic break. Sadly, even when committed by law, psych patients retain the right to refuse medication. Only when a patient acts out (attacking fellow patients and/or staff) are they placed in four points restraints, forcefully injected with an antipsychotic/psychotropic drug and left in a "Quiet Room." Personally, I feel this leaves other patients at risk and extremely vulnerable for injury, death and psychological trauma. Smaller hospitals are woefully understaffed and place teenagers/children in with psychotic adults with histories of violence. I imagine they would disrupt and distract other patients TRULY attempting to take group therapies seriously and get their illness under control. Furthermore, here in America, the hospitals (going for that almighty dollar) attempt to push psychiatric patients towards discharge in THREE DAYS. My sister's schizophrenic onset occurred her senior year of university. She was salutatorian of her high school and granted a full academic 4 year ride to Vanderbilt University. She was violent and noncompliant with meds. Thankfully, this was before mental hospitals were closed in the 1980s. It was as if a bomb dropped on our family. She was the Golden Child. When time-released injections became available, we could relax a bit for four weeks, not as fearful of being killed. She retained the right to refuse medication. Six years ago, off meds, she attacked a resident at her group home, was sent to a hospital psych ward, was released 72 hours later without placement, vanished and the police have ruled her "presumed dead, foul play suspected." Because of HIPPA, we were never notified of her removal from the group home or her release from hospital. The mental health system could be revamped and work magnificently IF we would tax the very wealthy. My opinion.

She caused us so much trauma and the fathers weren't really in our lives. My sister also has mental illness that progressed with every child she had. DCFS can't help because there's no room to take them and us in unless it becomes deadly

I live quite literally a street over from where this happened. The house was of course demolished. Still an empty lot with trees planted for each child and teddy bears. I can understand this story. My mom is like Raina. She went down hill after her father and grandma died. She shut down instantly. She didn't feed my siblings and I, but my sister and stepped up. It was hard because she abused my brother. Mental illness in family is hard because you go in and out of negative and positive feelings. In Australia it is so hard to get help if you're poor. The welfare system here goes out of their way to break you (making preexisting conditions worse) and tries everything they can to get out of helping people. They pretend they're there to help. They pretend they're there to get you on your feet while looking for work. Then they beat you down every chance they get. "Oh, you're old and on a pension of $600 a fortnight that has to cover medical bills, travel, rent, etc.? This robodebt says you owe us $10,000 so cough up." Then it turns out to be a false debt and they still fight to get you to pay.

Yes, correlation does not prove causation. While use of substances is more common in those who have mental illnesses, there is no way to prove which came first. Many mental health professional think self-medication (that could lead to a worsening of already present symptoms) is where that commonality comes from. There is no actual proof that weed CAUSES any mental illnesses.

I have to say from what I have seen and experienced with friends. The problem is when you completely cut it out completely. You almost have ween yourself off it. Thank you for covering not only an Australian case but a QLD one. As a Queenslander I remember this case when it broke, it devastated everyone. You should look into the Singh Murders down in Brisbane QLD Australia in 2003. I went to school with the youngest victim, she was so friendly and happy. It’s just a heartbreaking story with a multiple home murder , DV, people being out as swingers in a religious community, circumstantial evidence (wasn’t an open close case). The convicted murders son going to the school across the road from where the youngest (& I) went to school. It’s just a sad case and forever changed my life and that’s the reason I am into true crime.

Yeah unfortunately that's so true. I also live in Cairns. There are heaps of large families in similar areas. It's so common to see people walking the streets at like 2am at night, screaming and carrying on due to all sorts of drugs and alcohol (it's kinda an issue here). Hey so! I live in Cairns, I grew up here, and I'm commenting from here too. I was 13 when this case happened. Just some things about the town - in the last decade or two we've been known for our unusually high murder rate considering our population. My uncle is an unsolved murder case, there was the massacre in this video, the case of Toyah Cordinley, disappearances, etc. The suburb Manoora is more in the towny part of Cairns (we aren't /really/ a city) and is also called Manunda, locals use them interchangeably. It's on the south side of Cairns, which is known particularly among locals as a crime heavy area. If people are talking about rentals, they will almost always say 'but I don't want to live on the south side'. Suburbs beginning with M are used as warnings, as well as suburbs starting with W (Manunda, Manoora, Mooroobool, White Rock and Woree usually). If you search 'm suburbs cairns' you'll be given a list of suburbs here to avoid. I went to school not far from where this took place. Not the same school as these kids, but we're a relatively small town, and most kids (or who were kids at the time) knew them or knew someone who knew them. This really shook the town up. I'm not going to comment on her mental health and please don't take this as my opinion, but I can't think of any locals I know who reacted positively to the outcome of this case. The general consensus was that she should receive the worst possible punishment. The convention centre is one often used by most schools in the town. Some schools did tributes to the victims and offered counselling to any students affected. Any time a murder like this happens, the town always comes together and gets very passionate - like in the Toyah case, there is a a billboard with her name and her favourite flowers, sunflowers, on it. Half of the cars here have a bumper sticker with her name and sunflowers that reads 'ANSWERS FOR TOYAH'.

as someone who has many close friends with psychotic disorders, it's always important to remember that they are much more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. it is a scary illness, very much so, but moreso for those who have it than those around them. it's always important to have empathy and love for those dealing with things like that as opposed to automatically thinking they must be scary and violent. people with psychotic disorders who commit violent acts of this caliber are very few and far between. this is such a sad and tragic case. so much love to these kids, their extended families, the eldest son, and the mother. here's hoping she's able to recover and live a somewhat healthy life going forward, and that the eldest son can recover from his own trauma as well.

Last year there was a similar case in my town where a mother murdered 5 of her 6 children (i think the youngest was 3 or 4 and the oldest 8). She then picked up her oldest son (he was 12) from school and went on a train with him. She texted her mother that she'd killed her children and sent the son to her. Then she got off the train and tried to commit suicide by throwing herself in front of another train (as far as i know she survived). It was so shocking to hear it in the radio! Apparently she did it because she was overwhelmed being a single mom with 6 children and it's just so heartbreaking that she resorted to murder instead of giving them up for adoption or something

Had some kind of mental break and chased down the children and drown them in the tub. Then she called the police. What is so sad is that she had been crying out for help. She saw the children as demons! We have to start paying attention to situations like these.

@@kayjay407 If you’re referencing Andrea Yates, she drowned her children because she wanted to save their souls. She was living in a very sheltered, hyper religious environment and had been told by two of the groups prominent leaders that she needed to “help them” by making sure they didn’t sin. Even after she expressed concerns of homicidal thoughts to both her husband and the church, they just brushed her off.

Let me just clear up what the judge says. Marijuana does NOT CAUSE schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that is genetic. There is little to no proof (due to lack of research) to prove that it does. The small amount of research done only shows that it may help with an earlier onset of schizophrenia, which the person already has but is still dormant. This is very important, and the way things are worded matters. This woman always had schizophrenia. The most you can blame on the marijuana could be that she ended up ill quicker than she would have. It was always going to happen without the proper help and medication. The judge blamed marijuana 1. Because that is a government must to keep up propaganda and 2. It is easier, and again in the governments self-interest, to blame marijuana than to openly discuss in court that the government FAILED this women with the lack of programs and funds to help people like her.

Mental illness can be genetic, but it can also be nurtured by environment factors. People who defend drugs tend to be a user. The government has made the issues worse by legalizing it for recreational use. It’s a very big concern in the mental health profession that people struggling with any mental issues NOT to use marijuana because it can and does put people into psychosis.... I’m a supporter of medical use for Parkinson’s and other nerve disorders or cancer to help with pain and appetite. But if you’re struggling with and mental health issues you should never ever turn to any substance. Including marijuana.

I love what I do as I think mental health is so important, it impacts on every aspects of our lives. It is even more important in cases of mentally disordered offenders because I believe that if we can treat and rehabilitate offenders, with the appropriate support and monitoring in place, then we can stop re-offending. i’ve met someone who developed psychosis after excessive marijuana use. they’d been using marijuana since the age of 14, and i met them in the psych ward when they were 18. it was so scary and heartbreaking to see
