Elecom M-XT2DR Trackball Review

M-XT2DR comes with CHINESE omrons NOT JAPAN ones.
Kind of letdown. Why would Japanese made trackball have Chinese omrons?
Left, right, far right buttons: Chinese Omrons (D2FC-F-7N)
Middle button(scroll wheel click) : some unheard of "Kailh" micro switch.
M-XT3DRBK is out, now. The only difference is the far right click is programmable. However, it cannot be programmed to slow down the cursor.

How did you program the pinky button? Cant find it on the ELECOM Mouse Assistant software. Thanks!

@james fowler I figured it out but there is bug in Mouse Assistant software where the only commands that work for arbitrary keys are from dropdown and not from keypress.

yea, I game with thumb trackballs and it's awesome, once you get used to it. regular mouse, and kensington slimblade almost gave me carpal tunnel, too. slimblade gave me index finger pain. I always come back to thumb trackballs. I think it's b/c the thumb naturally has more range of motion, and you don't move the wrist at all. I've never had wrist or finger pain using thumb trackballs.

wish the software for it didn't suck so bad I can't program the left/right tilt wheel clicks nor the far right ring finger button I have the ELECOM M-XT3URBK version btw that's "supposed" to be more programmable it's a good mouse, but programmable side of it is bad making it kind of a lemon

I use "x-mouse button control." It's awesome.

I tried that software, but you can't configure the ring finger button at all with it and I don't believe it helped for games either in detecting left and right tilt wheel button clicks which can't be programmed with them in games.

Which trackball should I get for a starter? I want to try a good thumb trackball and I can't decide between these three: -LOGITECH WIRELESS TRACKBALL M570 -ELECOM WIRELESS M-XT3DRBK -ELECOM WIRELESS M-XT2DRBK I also have some questions: 1-Any other sugestions? 2-Do you know what are the main differences between the xt2 and xt3? 3-Do you know if the precision button of the elecom works in arch linux? Thanks! Yours videos kind of convinced me to try a trackball.

m570's tracking is the best. it's the smoothest. however if you have 4k display, you need higher dpi so elecom would be better. m570's switches...hmmm...I don't have good experience with them. they didn't last very long. main difference between xt2 and xt3 is that xt2 has the precision button and it's not programmable. xt3 has the same button, but it's programmable, but you can't program it to be the precision button. xt2's the precision button will work in linux b/c it's hardware driven, not software. at first I didn't think much of the precision button, but as time passed, there were definitely moments when it was really useful. if I were to buy it again, I would buy the xt2, not xt3. one thing though, m570's battery life is excellent. it would last forever. but elecom eats battery so much faster. on high setting, I think it only lasted like 2 months. it can get annoyiing having to change the battery often.

Are you happy with the purchase? I am trying to choose my first trackball and it came down to the same two options.

If it's going to be for a laptop go ahead, but if it for a desktop maybe consider getting a larger trackball like kensington expert mouse

Laptop, Ultrabook, I need it to be portable, precise and easy to get used to. Easy to configure software is a big plus. (I suspect the logitech is better in that way). Is it worth getting the xt3?

It is proven with actual test that the index finger with the middle and ring finger better control the ball than just the thumb. The leverage and recoiling of the middle fingers are much more responsive and has a longer throw. Let the thumb control the thumb wheel not the ball.

they use Chinese Omrons because Sanwa has their manufacturing plant in China.

I perfer logitech M570 than Elecom if compare both.

Agree 100%!! I have used many trackballs. So far, I think M570 is the best.

Brian No, I haven't. I'm planning to buy Ergo MX. I think it is better than M570. The problem is: it's a little too expensive. Acutually, I bought and used this Elecom trackball for a while but I did not like it, so I disposed of it.

I don’t think that Elecom M-XT2DR is well designed. I used it at my workplace and M570 at home. I think M570 is better in terms of ergonomic design. If I had not used M570, I might not have disposed of Elecom M-XT2DR.

Probably Chinese Omrons because the trackball is made in China.

The Omron is original japan. Japanese Omrons and those bootleg chinese Omrons have different feel and quality; I had opened mine to check it.

Elecom doesn't support OS X 10.12 or WindBlows 10. Bad Form Elecom!

Interesting, they should note that on their site, so that people are aware. OS X 10.12 isn't supported. I downloaded the latest software and installed only to have to remove it, as it interfered with Logitech's software.
