I have a 300 smoker and a 500 4stroke, but I am having so much fun on my Sur Ron! I don't load it up, I just ride to some nice little trails in my neighborhood and have a blast for an hour and go home. Not replacing my dirtbikes, but sure is nice having a quiet and cheap option that lets me ride around near home and have a blast without upsetting anyone or having to load up/drive/unload/ride/load/drive home!.

To be able to ride from the house without loading the truck or upsetting your neighbors is a great thing and allows us to ride more. I am 70 + and purchased the X260 Segway, have gone trail riding to Rampart Range south of Denver , it is an awesome unit, did about a 30 mile trail ride and that was before I did the governor wire bypass, now it has enough power to hurt a good rider, will need two battery,s to get a good ride in, but no gas can only chain lube.

Great to hear some older folks getting onto this. Im 60+ and used to race bmx but had to give it up to go to college and never got back to it. now with the electric into the market I'm thinking of getting back into it. I have been riding the Zero DS 14.4 K battery since 2013. It is still going strong. I can cruse down the freeway at 70 and pass a car and look down and I am all of a sudden doing 90. It is so fun going from light to light and leaving most of the gas bikes behind as well as the cars. It is quiet also to sneak up on people. Ridden it over 40 miles at Freeway speeds. It doesn't pop wheelies as well as the FX, as that is a wheelie machine. it is just too tall for my 31 inch inseam to where I am not comfortable riding it on snow and ice. (my favorite sport)

Awesome review--thanks! I need all of them. I recently got a 2020 Zero DSR, 14.4 for longer range delivery work, just have a few off-road trips, but so far it's been an insane blast, can make it from ie Santa Monica to Santa Barbara on a single charge (staying off highway) and then from there (2 hr charge) to endless national forest dirt in Los Padres. So far I've seen range of 80 (freeway) to over 400 miles (hypermiling). Trips on Highway 33 near Ojai, CA (top ride for sure) saw over 200 miles range doing the Reyes Peak climb to over 7,000'. My Gods electric is so fun, if the range is there. [The Forest Service should be lobbied to build out a charging network.] But what I've discovered best part of an electric is how well it can handle steep climbs! With a low power/eco mode, it rumbles up like a tank--no clutching braking throttle stalling nightmare--can stop in mid climb, finish off that joint, and pray for a quick death if the 430lb bike flips and takes you down some Malibu canyon. But tell you what--after new road tires, few bloody mary's--the DSR flew like a goddamn lightening bolt up Corral Canyon 4000k' BACK DOWN [censor dirt track] in the dark with not a single fall. Can only imagine with one of these lighter bikes can just jump the whole damn mountain!

You got the that right, not all of us go ripping down the street riding a wheel for a 1/4 mi. ( I have) I mostly ride slow and easy in the deep woods hunting for the remains of old houses. I locate their trash piles and mine them for old bottles and house hold items. I've found 300yr. Old rum bottles from Jamaica and solid silver table ware. Its a new surprise everyday.

So I’m trying to decide between a new 2021 gas 250 or a SurRonX or Other e-bike. I live on some steep mountains in NC and wonder about the power going up and down the side of a mtn. pretty much the whole time. While I hate maintenance like yourself so that is very appealing along with the quietness of course, Opinion on what would be better since you’ve had both? I feel if it was flat or even trails surRon would be the best hands down. But Id mainly be making own trail through woods. Thanks a lot for any help.😀

@@lukefish9443 If you are in a very rural area with mountains I would get a gas 250. Hands down no contest on steep long uphills. Plus woods riding off trail can do damage to the SurRon. I broke my front fork guard in the first month and Luna said I has to purchase an entire new fork! $500.00---What??. I eventually called DNM directly and they were nice and sold me a couple pairs of them for $30. So, the SurRon is loads of fun because it's so light and easy to throw around with very little maintenance, but nothing beats the power of a new gas mx 250/450...nothing.

Love the trials style riding. Got into it when i would take my 1200 vstar classic metric cruiser offroad in the desert. Real slow and carefully picking my path so as not to damage the cruiser. After trying that, i was hooked on slow n difficult riding.

i currently own a banshee , and a ktm 300exc. and various other MT bikes, road bicycles. an electric bike never crossed my mind until, we just moved to a town that is dominated with bicycle riders and there is a old rail road converted and paved into a riding trail. electric bikes are welcome. and its a small town so ripping in the woods with the dirt bike is a no go. the police station is 1/8 mile from my house. lol. the bike trail would be awesome with an electric bike because there is small trails off of it all over the place. nice review im thinking about the surron.

Excellent summarization of all these bikes! I'd love to see a comprehensive list of some of the other bikes out there stacked into the same categories or a matrix with all parameters. For example, I have a 2016 Typhoon. It's got 6,000 Watts, weighs 115 lb, range about 30 miles/4000 ft climb with upgraded battery very quiet, brakes and suspension slightly better than Sur Ron and cost about $6000 to 8000 depending on how it's configured. Unfortunately at the time that I purchased it I don't believe the Sur Ron was available to me yet. I would definitely get a Sur Ron instead of this bike at this point because it's cheaper and has motorcycle wheels instead of mountain bike wheels and therefore more rugged.

My friend got his 2020 KTM Freeride E street legal with very little work. Also I ride a 2009 Zero XE and it is much quieter then my other friends 2021 EM Escape. I haven't tried the new FX so can't say on that one. But the 1st thing my friend with the KTM said was this bike is so quiet compared to the KTM, Sur-Ron or EM Escape as we all ride together and trade bikes.

You should test and review a Delfast Top 3.0. it looks very similar with the Surron X, but Delfast Top 3.0 claims to have 50mph/80kmh max speed with 200miles/321km range on a single charge. Also what sounds a kind of too optimistic thing is that in the battery details they say it will last for 3000 charging cycles which is ~ 600000 miles / 960000km ( sure 😅 )

As long as you have pedals on the bike, its considered an ebike. If you get the version with the pegs then prepared to be pulled over and shunned when you take your bike to the trails.

Depends where you live on how much trouble you run into… but you will FOR SURE run into some form of it if you’re not heeding to your states laws. California has been ruined by SurRonster and all hill kid followers. Now cops see a SurRon and based in visuals alone assume every single one is illegal, when in reality, if you get the fully functioning electronic power pedal kit with cadence sensor, never factory unlock the top speed, have a bike helmet on, and are 16 years or older… it’s a class 3 ebike. It’s unfortunate really. But if you don’t live in California you’ll probably be okay.

Almost no one who gets a Sur Ron just uses it the way it comes. Most Sur Rons end up costing anywhere from $4k to $7K. I know this because I just sold my 2021 for what I paid for it because I did not want to spend another $3000 plus to upgrade it to how I would want it. Fork, rear shock, new controller and battery, better tires and rims...all this just to start!

Amen! I'm in the same boat. Would be willing to pay $12k on a good bike and be done with it. With the sur-ron nothing is good no matter what. I have the best forks and shocks money could buy and still hit jumps like my fork is about to break in 2. Fun to ride but if you want more than a mtb with an electric motor you should consider something else.

That 2x2 bike seems like the way forward. Low noise, no chain, no sprocket. More durable. Less moving parts, sealed, no dust or rock damage.

Great overview, my clunker 2wd 1952 balloon tank bike is 1.2kw and these vids help keep it in perspective. I have front or rear motor cut on a switch. Real vintage ev the old steel frames are really strong. LOL! Bultaco may make good ev mx soon.

Informative review thanks Tucker with good detail. Have you tried the Electric Motion '21 Escape models? In terms of one bike that will cover all your riding needs, the Escape blows the others away in your test, especially the Escape R with mechanical diaphragm clutch.

Man my BMX bike can push $1500 with certain parts. Mountain Bikes jump 2k plus easy, so $3600 seriously isn’t that bad. But I think over the last few months the prices have gone closer to $4000
