Hey, Dade, I'm sure you don't remember me, but I sent you a long, rambling KZbin DM nearly a decade ago (back when those existed) asking about advice because I felt I needed to transition but was afraid to take the first steps. You gave me some cautious advice that really helped make it click that this was something I *needed* to do, and now I'm happy to say I've been on T for nearly 9 years and am still very happy with my decision with no regrets (other than the estrangement it's brought from my extremely conservative Evangelical family). I just wanted to say thank you for your patience and compassion in replying sincerely to a lost and hesitant young man looking for guidance. I always appreciate your videos, and I hope you recover quickly from your burnout situation. I can't imagine working full time on a degree *and* having a full time job while *also* caring for kids- truly a Herculean task. And thank you for taking the time to connect once again. See you next time!

Hey Dade! Glad you're in a better place and taking some care of yourself. Burnout is hardcore.. And I think that we have cumulative or compound burnout as Trans folks. We also are better at taking care of and responsibility for others than for our own physical and mental health. Thankyou for being a massive and incredibly positive and realistic transmasc role model. For consistently wearing that mantle when so much else was happening personally. Take care

Hi Dade, with this video, I wanted you to know that you are the true trans man in my life. You know my story, but it was not until I found you here and started watching your videos did I begin to understand the world of trans. I feel I am able to speak to my business partner/god son about trans with a small amount of knowledge given the highly Intelligent way you are able to present information. Please remember that progress comes like the waves at the beach. Some are small, some large and some medium and then small again, but they do keep coming. Time is the key. Please take care of yourself, you are one of the most valuable humans beings I have ever found. Peace my friend...

The "pushback" thing really got me and made me think- really resonated with me on more than the Transgender Level. And when you said, "People make big decisions all the time and then change their mind"- that also made me think. "Transgender KZbin" is such an important space. These past few updates from you have been especially helpful to me. I've been letting the fact that I'm transgender kinda "take a back seat" in my life- I'll never ignore or silence that part of me but the way I relate to my own identity has evolved and continues to do so. Seeing another man well into his transition is just as helpful at this point in my life as it was 10 years ago but the way it helps me has also changed and I'm so fucking grateful for that because it means I've survived and I'm growing. I hesitate to throw the phrase "Father Figure" around but in this moment I can't find a better description for how I relate. Maybe "Mature Man Who is A Bit Older Than Me and Shares The Experience of Being Transgender but also Just Living His Damn Life". Thanks, Dade! Congratulations on your career change. Glad things are smoothing out. Take care and best wishes to your family.

hey there! i'm a younger trans dude also from oregon (portland specifically). i'll be 3 years on t in a couple of weeks! its amazing to see transgender men who have been out and transitioning for a while. i don't often see people like us living past our 30s. i'm sure they exist but its nice to see someone who is trans and happy. thank you for being so open minded and accepting about nonbinary individuals as well. i am also pretty binary with my identity but the disrespect and division for people outside of the social "norm" from people in our own community is disgusting to me. we have to stand up and advocate for each other! i'm so glad i found your channel, i am also working full time and doing school part time and it has been pretty tough. but, it's what i need to do to get where i want to be. i hope you are doing well.

Thanks for this video, Dade. My first time here. You are an amazingly strong person! Everyday life is becoming unsustainable on many fronts.. however anything that is fear-based is mentally unhealthy. We have to clear our minds of negativity: to choose our battles by being productive rather than being self-destructive. You are correct in that we should accept our choices to transition multiple times. Humans can do anything they put their minds to. We are authentic and diversely fluid 🥰Nothing changes that.

Thanks for the update, Dade. I couldn't agree with you more. I didn't start questioning my gender until about 26, and you were one of the few examples I had at the time to look to of trans guys who were older and transitioning in the context of a long-term partnership. Seeing that you could make a change like that at 30 and still keep your marriage was crucial for me, even if it took a few more years for me to get up the courage to do it. Now I've transitioned, I'm married to the same person, I'm going back to school to make a career change, and I'm thriving. So thank you for sharing your story and continuing to check it with us. I can't imagine taking on all that you have in the last several years. Please do take care of yourself.

I'm surprised there are problems in Oregon...that state seems as blue as it gets. 🌊 I think most people are feeling similar to you as far as stress and anxiety just due to the horrific political environment. But, when you're overwhelmed with non-stop work, college, a family to take care of, and a never-ending battle for your rights as a citizen...I can't even imagine. At least you can still read a book and watch a movie of your own choice, in Oregon.

I've been saying this for years. There is no Community at all, just people--many of whom are disempowered and angry and acting out to hurt others to offset their own pain. And the punching down is a very real symptom of internalized transphobia. Hurt people hurt people, right? Thanks for sharing--so good to see you, for sure. :)
@ElectricDade
@ElectricDade Жыл бұрын
Hey Dillan. It’s be a while. I do feel like there is a trans community… just not in the way people think. Even in this space that we all really want to be safe - it’s not. It’s not because just like in any group of people, we have people that are young and inexperienced, we have people that still have lessons to learn and reflections to make, and we have people that are just plain ass holes. In other words - yeah, we’re people. In the larger picture of what makes people who they are, the trans part that brings many of us together is really insignificant and is not singularly enough to make community.
@DillanDiGiovanni
@DillanDiGiovanni Жыл бұрын
@@ElectricDade thanks for your reply. I think your last sentence confirms what I said and the point I was trying to make ;). And I don't think it is the young and inexperienced individuals who are problematic--it is also individuals of all ages and stages who contribute to problematic dynamics. To the extent people have not done their work, they act out. So finding who we ARE as people, while also claiming the identity of trans, and finding healing among people of all identities who also share our values is what provides the true sense of community--that's my opinion, anyway.

I think it’s important to note that the subject of non-binary gender identities has yet to be studied in depth. At all. However, this has not stopped self-proclaimed non-binary people from making rather firm assertions on the nature of reality, with all the confidence of one who _has_ done those studies themselves in such a way that they did their level best to disprove their own hypothesis. In other words… adhering to the bleedin’ scientific method. This presents a problem when their assertions and their arguments are subjected to scrutiny, and they interpret this as a personal attack. As it is, right now, belief in the validity of non-binary genders is entirely faith-based, and pretending otherwise is only going to do that community harm in the long run. One *_simply cannot do research_* into *_anything_* with a foregone conclusion in mind. As long as the conclusion that non-binary gender identities are innate, immutable, and involuntary is assumed to be correct without having confirmed it to be so through rigorous study and replicable data, then I’m sorry, but under that mindset the research that needs to be done simply can’t be done, not without its presented findings being thoroughly untrustworthy. I get it. It’s confusing to the enbies as well. Gather a cluster of them and ask them individually what non-binary means and you’ll get as many different answers as there are people in the cluster. Something is definitely going on, but it’s something they are either unaware of or don’t want to acknowledge, depending on the person. Unfortunately, this necessarily means that they aren’t in a position to be making demands of people on pain of being labeled bigots. Yes, that goes for demanding usage of preferred gender neutral pronouns, and especially neopronouns, for the simple reason that nobody should be obligated or compelled to express faith in something in spite of a complete lack of supporting evidence in order to be considered intelligent or a good person. Doubly unfortunate, it also means that there is a greater than zero chance that what non-binary is in reality is a potential symptom of several different personality disorders that tend to manifest attention seeking behavior and delusions, and/or stemming from a desperate need to fit into a group, for a sense of belonging. _Of course_ there are transgender people (and many more gay people) who have reacted less than favorably to the recent (and yes, it is very recent) non-binary trend. Yes, their claims are difficult to accept as truth for people who have for decades now been trying (and largely succeeding) to convince people that gender non-conformity has no bearing on your actual gender. _Of course_ there are transgender people who strongly object to the idea that gender is a social construct, for a few reasons, not least of which being the man behind that notion, John Money, was a notorious fraud and child abuser whose research he tried to use to prove that theory resulted in his subject committing suicide later in life. Another big reason is that if gender truly is a social construct, and not innate, then there is no need for medical transition, and all one would need to alleviate gender dysphoria was mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Obviously, that’s not the case with all instances of gender dysphoria, there are people who need the transition process, and therefore, gender is, by definition, innate. So yes, there are transgender folks who have a big problem with a group of people claiming that they are also transgender, despite not being diagnosed with gender dysphoria, not undergoing HRT or surgeries related to transition, and some of which even changing their gender identity on a whim. “Oh, yesterday I felt like a girl, but today I feel like a demiboy. Presto magico pronoun change-o.” That particular non-binary phenomenon, the ever changing identity, would be deeply insulting to me were I transgender myself, and no amount of self-reflection would change that. Bottom line is this: if it’s an aspect of one’s _being,_ then there is a universal definition of it that would apply to all who claim it in good faith. If instead there is debate on what it really means to be something, if what one needs to be something is not agreed upon by people who claim to be that thing, then the thing more closely resembles an ideology. In fact, it functions _exactly_ like an ideology. Again, until more research is done, I’m afraid that’s how it will stay. I also want to touch upon the laws you were bringing up. Were you aware that those laws count transgender people among their supporters? If so, have you considered why? If not, here’s the reason why: the purpose of those laws is to prevent doctors from administering medical transition procedures to minors. *_This should be universally understood as a no-brainer._* Children are simply too young to consent to such life-altering procedures, and they are decidedly life-altering. Moreover, I appreciate your compassion towards detransitioners… but transitioning was not a mistake *_they_* made. It is the responsibility of every healthcare provider to do their due diligence to rule out any potential comorbidities (or even trying other treatment methods, as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy _has been known to alleviate gender dysphoria)_ before resorting to such a drastic treatment as sex reassignment surgery and HRT. In the case of detransitioners, this due diligence was not done. Detransitioners are victims of medical malpractice, and there are more and more lawsuits popping up related to said malpractice. If transitions performed on minors don’t stop altogether, those lawsuits won’t stop either. I won’t deny that there is a risk of those laws you mentioned being worded too vaguely (that’s a whole other can of worms, lawmakers are not the best at writing what they mean in general) but the fact remains that children cannot consent to such drastic treatments, nor can parents consent on their behalf, really. I understand your commitment to positivity. That is truly admirable, to say the least. But please be more careful throwing around such terms as “hatred.” It becomes all too easy to dismiss entirely what someone is saying just because they’re dissenting from a core value or belief of yours, and close your ears to their reasoning. In the case of non-binary genders, it’s entirely likely that dissenters are operating under their own personal ethics and values of rejecting faith, and only accepting what has been proven with evidence. In fact, that’s all I’ve seen; people saying “your claims are dubious at best because reasons X, Y, and Z.” (And sure, they can be rude in the way they say it, sometimes… but from what I’ve seen, they’re giving as good as they get 😕) Dismissing their arguments and concerns as “hatred” only serves to dehumanize further, not less, and will definitely not encourage people to listen to your own perspective.

You went a lot of places with this and cited the need for research. I agree, actually. I also think everyone should have space to be who they say they are while we all get it figured out. I feel like we actually have many similar views. You should take a look at the video I made right after this one. As for hatred, there is a ton from all sides and I won't apologize for using that word. I feel you may misunderstand my use of it. There is a big difference between hatred and disagreement. Great to see you, brother! And glad to hear you're doing well (on the most part). I wonder if part of the whole in-fighting and enbyphobia getting worse is because people think if they can look "more valid" to cis people (aka their idea of taking things seriously with hormones/surgery etc.) then cis people will understand them better? But really it makes no sense, and if they think politicians will stop passing bills or at least slow down their momentum by taking binary trans people more seriously, they are extremely naive.

Wow, that is such a good way to put it with regard to some binary trans people feeling about non-binary people the same way that some cis people feel about trans people. I hadn't thought about it that way, and it just goes to show that bigotry is bigotry however you slice it. And, for me, it's always even more disappointing to see people who come from communities that have experienced oppression and discrimination enacting the exact same behaviour on others. It's one thing to be a bigot when you're privileged and don't know how it feels to be on the receiving end (not that it's an excuse, it's just that you can comprehend how that happens), it's something else entirely to actually know how it feels and still feel ok about subjecting others to it. I'll never understand that. Just like transphobia and biphobia in the gay and lesbian community - it's incredible to hear people trying to justify talking about others in literally exactly the same way people talk about them.

I fell off the radar or should I say disappeared back into society after my SRS with my late husband/partner. Only resurfacing 4 & half years after my husband of 31 years had passed away. I went looking online hoping to find a Post-Op Transsexual widows support group as I was still struggling with the loss of my husband. Sadly I did not find one. What I did find was today's transgender activists. Many of whom I struggle to relate too ! Any issue that came up in my life related to me being transsexual I always dealt with myself 1 on 1 in a calm respectful manner & that worked fine for me. I struggle to understand why many of today's M2F trans folk lack empathy, caring understanding & respect for women but claim to be female while behaving like angry men in dresses who have no qualms about being violent to women. I can not & will not side with that kind of crazy behaviour. No wonder there is a push back.

I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately, people behave badly… and that includes trans people. It can be really disheartening since we don’t get space to behave badly since we are in the middle of fighting for our rights.

Violence or talk of violence toward or in response to anyone or anything solves absolutely nothing & if anything fuels hatred further! If one has to use that to get their point across or use it to fuel up people to side with them! Then one needs to look much deeper & sadly this is happening for & against rights in this sense & worldwide in other ways rampantly! War hatred & lack of compassion or understanding seems to prevail & it seems it’s a me me me & what I want society! You would think that we as human beings would be a lot more kinder in a world harsh to live in? Especially with so much advancement on so many levels where people could live in harmony but people find something to hate & sadly that has been how the world has been for millennia! I simply refuse to let others opinions make me anyone other then who I am which is a woman with compassion who won’t judge anyone who isn’t harming anyone else! Sadly though with all the past wrongs we’ve committed as a world throughout history things reoccur! I guess we still have a lot to learn? Let’s pray it’s not a bunch flashes of light in various places caused by the unthinkable that humbles us as humans! Hatred could eventually be the very end of us all & I wonder who will worry in that moment who’s washrooms are used or who was what when they were born? Let’s pray that we all open our eyes to a more accepting & loving world! I’m truly sorry you lost your husband that isn’t easy & I wish you well!

Thank you for saying these things about the discrimination of non binary people within our community, you’re probably right about saying some “binary” trans people feel their identities are threatened by non binary people (I was like that initially) but it’s not acceptable. It’s disturbing and mind boggling.. thanks for saying everything you said in the video. It feels good to have older trans people stand up for everyone and come back to give words of consolation. Thanks

i think my anger/dislike towards non-binary or genderfluid is because i do not view myself as trans anymore. i'm nowhere near your age nor the years on testosterone, but my life has been so busy that i don't have room to be dysphoric. it feels like the people who are openly out as trans have stolen my obscurity. i pass 100% and live in a town where being visibly trans could be an invitation to endangerment. the sudden influx of people coming out as trans, whether binary or not, has gained the attention of the media. people think we shouldn't exist. i came out before there was so much hatred and before all of the bills were put into law. it feels to me that the attention visibly trans people are receiving has ruined MY ability to be out. which i know is not true, but that's how i feel and i'm still coming to terms with the actual truth. i'm not proud whatsoever to "be trans." i am over it and want to continue building my life in different direction. this is the hand i have been dealt and there is no changing that. anyways, this was a video i needed to watch. thank you for continuing to be this beacon of light for me and others.

Does gender affirming hormone therapy cause any diseases like diabetes and blood pressure in trans women and trans men?Could you answer this please,Dade?Just wanted to know.🙂
@ElectricDade
@ElectricDade Жыл бұрын
No. All switching your hormone system does is make you more susceptible to things that come with that hormone naturally. For instance high blood pressure and testosterone go hand in hand whether you are cis or trans.

Just a word of advice. I am on HRT I am a woman, and on women harmone the doc really monitors because they are not good to stay on and the lowest doses as possible. Can't imagine it's not affecting this person in a hard way

Hey Dade, regarding the issues of society moving forward with the trans world ... I think if there would be a clearer understanding that regardless of what you do to yourself, you cannot change the chromosomes you were born with. So therefore, as in any other athletic situation, it is and always will be completely unfair to females when a person with male chromosomes competes in athletics with them. It would, at least, help the train move forward if trans women would respect that issue.
@ElectricDade
@ElectricDade Жыл бұрын
Hello. You are right, chromosomes are not changeable. However, it is not chromosomes that give one gender more physical strength than the other - it’s hormones… specifically testosterone. Any woman who contains testosterone at an “appropriate” level should be able to compete.

I have a lot of respect and admiration for you Dade. With that, I respectfully disagree. If a male has gone through puberty, then starts the transformation into becoming a female. On hormone therapy, should absolutely not be allowed to compete in women's sports.

@@elizabethobrien8678 As this is a hot and relativity new topic - disagreement are necessary and expected while we all figure things out. For me, my thoughts are that rules should be fair for all people. Special rules not being applied just because someone is trans. I know the path forward is not clear.

Very well said. I actually have an idea for this, it's just my opinion. If officials, like the Olympics, came up with an additional sports ... section? category? ... main platform being unisex. Participate, knowing your opponent could be anyone of any sexual origin or identity or preference. Same rules apply for whatever sports event it is. The only other ideas along side that was a branch off of special Olympics. Like a new category but for transgender athletes. Coming up with a solution to this, would help society move forward, rather than becoming more angry and frustrated every time we learn that yet another female athlete has lost to a biological male.
