wow, what a great option: keep enjoying the classic car without the limitations of old ferrari engine (expensive missing parts that take months to find, expensive mechanics or lack of them near your area, etc) and like you said: more power and more usability? thats a priceless combination ... and not too far in the future, these cars will only be able to be used on the track and not on public roads and these conversion will give many more years of life. I now know what I want. Great video. Greetings from Florida 👍

I'd like to do this. Any shops in the USA?
@ElectricPetrolhead2 жыл бұрын
I’m sure there are. Get in touch with Electric Classic Cars and see if they have any partner shops in the USA There’s also this car which was converted a few years ago so could research and find that shop too? electricgt.com/builds/1978-ferrari-308-gts/ Good luck!

I notice the diff is behind the motor/inverter? Is the LDU upside down or turned around and running in reverse? I ask because I am installing an SDU in a Honda S2000 and need to mount like this.

I asked Peter for you: YEs, it's backwards, so the motor is running in reverse, not a problem for an electric motor, but it needed the oil pump modifying as it only works in forward. Yes, in reverse a tesla isn't getting oil! twitter.com/electric308/status/1072869342260355072?s=21 twitter.com/electric308/status/1072868740411183106?t=ltlPiNYVKL3mn7hLVJS38Q&s=08 Feel free to follow him on Twitter. What kind of batteries were used? I thought the Tesla batteries needed to be cooled.

These are LGChem batteries 👍 Many thanks for watching.

I hope you didn't put too much power over stock. These cars are pretty feeble and weren't made for a lot of power. The suspension and brakes are small and the mount points are tiny plus the welded mild steel frame isn't up for much. Be careful out there.
@ElectricPetrolhead2 жыл бұрын
It’s got a bit more power but it’s not a car you feel like abusing. Lot of work gone into reinforcing the car for the motor and batteries too. Thanks for watching

@@ElectricPetrolhead I got to work a little bit on the second generation of this car at a place called Waterville Cellular. Ferrari contracted them to design and make the weather-striping. Leaking was a huge complaint of first generation owners, and they leaked everywhere badly. Waterville had a full car water ingress tester and at the start the techs would get soaked so bad they'd end the test early. Ferrari sent over test jigs and extra parts and engineering would grab them up and cover them with stickers, "Hand tools only" because they didn't figure the any of the screws could handle their power tools. The hardware IS very small, if you worked on the car you would remember only using your small sockets. It does keep the car light and with about 200 hp they were well balanced. We also had a partial chassis for a convertible and looking at that always worried me at how hand made they looked. There's a KZbin video of a guy making an F-40 into a competition model, he rebuilds the suspension with modern race parts and stiffens the frame to handle it, nice work.

I should be happy to see undeserving Ferrari owners write-off their cars as it pushes the value of my mine up every time another one is destroyed. But being someone who genuinely loves Ferraris it actually breaks my heart to see them turned into Teslas which will only depreciate, eventually sold for parts and the owners left looking utterly stupid. Question: Do you think they would ever do this to 250 GTO? Of course not, because it would ruin it. Ruined just like what they have done to this 308 GTS
@ElectricPetrolhead2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your thoughts and totally agree about GTOs, F50s, Enzos etc. would be sacrilege to convert those But everyone who has driven the electric 308 says it’s better. The engine isn’t as special in them and with the roof off you mainly hear wind noise anyway. Reality for this owner is he uses the car far more as it’s now reliable.

@@ElectricPetrolhead It's a sacrilege to convert any Ferrari to electric in my opinion. All Ferraris are rare and irreplaceable. Every one of them has brought huge enjoyment to all sorts of people over the years. Owners have also spent huge sums maintaining them and caring for them since the day they left Maranello. That is partly because they love the car but also because they understand they are a custodian too of a rare, handmade work of art and they have an obligation to look after it for future generations. That all ends when their engines are ripped out and replaced with a battery. It's not even necessary to do it either. After 2030 classic cars can still be driven on petrol (only new cars will have to be electric). Petrol stations will still be around for legacy petrol vehicles (albeit petrol will be considerably more expensive) and classic cars will continue to emit less CO2 per year than even Greta Thunberg does each year. I mean that seriously. Let's compare her annual carbon footprint with a 308. I bet the 308 has a lower carbon footprint. I would strongly recommend any Ferrari owner not to convert their cars to electric for all the aforementioned reasons

Stupid, why tf would anyone want an electric Ferrari… let alone any electric vehicle for that matter. To do this to a 308 is satanic.
@ElectricPetrolhead5 ай бұрын
If you'd said a 250 or one of the V12 Ferraris then I totally 100% agree. The 308 engine isn't as well regarded as the V12 and with a targa top you mainly hear wind noise anyway. For the owner of this car. He's gone from barely using it due to unreliability to using it regularly. All the old parts including the engine went to keep other 308s on the road too :)
