The figures quoted are for the cell level density, when you translate that to a total pack weight a 64kwh v2 blade pack would weigh 90-95kg less than a V1 - not bad applied to a 1900kg car but won't turn it into a featherweight.

Fear of missing out (FOMO) on one battery tech generation is a reasons that battery swapping might be a good idea. package up the entire generation and over 5-7 years of batteries you could get 3 generations the way things are going today. They could then sell GEN 1 for energy storage while you drive around on GEN 3, when new battery tech comes out slap it into a standardized package and swap it onto the vehicle, if a problem shows up revert back to the previous generation while they sort out the new stuff.

Charging at home by solar is obviously the way to go, but I don’t see how home solar charging is seen as being “free”. Here in Australia a suitable solar installation to reduce your use of grid power and charge your EV is about $13,000 AUD ($10K USD). That’s a lot of petrol money and several years driving if an ICE owner was considering switching to an EV.

Did almost all of the charging of my last EV at home, but it would have been nice to have 10 min charging for longer trips (holidays). Some EV makers, especially for smaller EVs, assume you'll never do long road trips, and put in an anemic charger. The evolution we need to see with batteries is lower replacement costs or easier to fix partially faulty batteries. My P100D is 7 years old, at some point the battery is going to become an issue through degradation or total failure. The replacement cost I know is horrific (over $25K AUD I've heard), if these 'blade' batteries could allow faulty cells to be changed out for maybe $1,000 then used car buyers won't be so afraid of EV's. Super fast charging is nice and all but for most EV owners they soon realise that isn't the deal breaker, I've had mine since 2018 and I've visited a Supercharger 4 times.

The real interesting thing is home charging from solar and home battery . Home storage battery will soon be so much cheaper you may have a storage battery around 50-70 Kw for about $10,000 . As car EV batteries are much cheaper and reputedly cost around $3500 for a battery pack for a Model 3 WITHOUT Government subsidies .If you Combine this with say a 18-25 Kw solar system you could have the ability to charge you EV quickly after work at home . As most EV are charged ( or actually topped up ) at home once or twice a week . Very very few EV are driven more than 300Klm a day ,most are driven around 400 Klm a week ( ie one charge ) . As new houses are being built with EV in mind you will see power outlets that at home can charge a car in a few hours . Simply free solar electricity .

energy density numbers are at the cell level and depend on, the cell format a lot ! To be simple : => a pouch cell "à la LG" will have the best energy density, NCM only BUT you need a strong module eating on the pack density at the end => a "brick" prismatic cell "à la CATL" will show a lower but still pretty good density (the thicker the better for density but lesser for Fast Charging and power). will be ok with LFP or NCM => a short blade (not too long , up to 600mm, not too thin) is a pretty good optimal solution between power and energy. the best for LFP ! NCM possible up to 300mm long cell. => a long blade cell "à la BYD" , 1.2m long about , LFP compatible only, will not be optimal as it needs to be thin for voltage reason, and will have a lot of can material eating on the available internal volume for the chemistry

Regarding the discharge rate of the Blade 2. It is not a question of how an existing motor feels when packaged with the new battery in an EV. On the contrary, the Blade 2 permits manufacturers of EVs to design and build new motors that can take advantage of those fast discharge characteristics. The design of motors and batteries is a sympathetic exercise in which the best results follow from a smooth alignment of the technical features of both parts of the whole. What the Blade 2 permits is the use of specially engineered motors in an EV that can draw charge at a rate that is closer to the high rate that this extraordinary battery can dispatch it. The Blade 2 permits the use of EV motors that can spin up/accelerate faster and hold higher peak revs (rpm) and thus higher speeds when engineered to that end. Of course, having these batteries doesn't mean that the design of a well matched motor will be a straightforward exercise. The motor engineering is an art and science in itself. Great battery designs merely open a space of possibilities for electric motor design. Very bright electric motor engineers still have to come along to create something great for that space. That isn't easy.
@SaintKimbo29 күн бұрын

The limitation of charging speed is going to become more a problem of the grid - unable to provide enough electricity - rather than the ability of the cars to soak it up. Wind turbines don’t provide energy on demand - it’s a question of having as many EVs sat plugged into the grid as long and as often as possible, to soak up the turbine output when there is plenty of wind. Then when the wind doesn’t blow the EVs aren’t hungry.
