For every one of our rescued elephants, we do not use a delivery service, but want to ensure that our new elephant has a comfortable and safe journey.
Many elephants are scared to get on a truck, having had bad experiences throughout their life's story. On the truck, some elephants will stop to eat and drink. Depending on the journey, they can easily become dehydrated. An elephant may also have been injured during transport from braking or accelerating or sharp turns, hurting their body against the side of truck or slipping.
For each rescue, darrick and i will accompany the elephant.
Preparations are made to make the travel more comfortable. The floor is padded and not slippery when wet; padded support rails surround the elephant providing a measure of security and confidence; if cold, we have ellie coats; if hot, they are shaded and cooled with water mist; if rainy, they are protected depending on the temperature.
Most important is to stay close with the elephant to assist, comfort and feed them along the way. It is a positive engagement that begins their sojourn with us, and sets the stage for a new lease on life when they arrive in the Park to meet our herd and begin their life anew.

Lek is the Mother Theresa of elephants in Thailand!! She is an inexhaustible caretaker of these majestic creatures and a visionary in the area of animal rescue without peer. I end up coming to tears every time I watch one of these videos knowing that if she hadn't gone to the rescue, there are few people in the world who would, and this poor abused creature probably would have died of a heart attack under a heavy weight at a logging site somewhere in the mountains of Thailand.

It's wonderful to learn after a lifetime of living in chains this lovely old girl will end her days free from chains. (you did free her from chains, right? She walks free like the rescues in Africa, right?)

Caroline, yes, she will be free from chains, she will have good food, a river to play in and other elephants to join into a family group. She has been rescued by the best elephant sanctuary (Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai Thailand) and Lek is the the founder, she is the woman in the back of the truck! She truly shows that she will do anything to keep an elephant safe and comfortable. This elephant will be free to live the life she should be living, as she chooses.

There is so much about this video that brings tears. Her brutal treatment. The long, hard trip to rescue her - for some reason I can see how difficult it really is with those late-night gas station stops & that horrible bleak lighting, & how exhausted Lek looks. Notice in each rescue, while travelling, elephants know by their hearts first freedom leading to final rest n happier lives by holding up its trunk higher n higher to the sky n catch the wind of freedom.
