Elephant Kanjana had both hind legs injured when she was young. Born captive, her mother worked in a logging camp. After work, the mahout would let the mother and child out to walk in the jungle. The mother would drag a chain while her baby walked free. During a walk, the young Kanjana fell into a hole after a fire had just burned the forest. Hot coals were still in the hole. She tried to escape, and witnesses say that her mother tried to help. Not until people noticed was she able to get out. Both back legs were badly burned and her right ankle broken. Though handicapped she still spent twenty years pulling logs until she was sold, and the last 20 years she has carried tourists. As of yesterday, her work days are over. She is free to be an elephant now.

Elephant labor is not only cruel beyond words but also very outdated . I realize that I sound very out of touch with the reality of poverty that is so widespread in under developed countries but there must be a better approach to labor than destroying such thinking, feeling, emotional, and CLEARLY intelligent animals and taking away their very lives in the name of commerce.

Yes, please show us updates and also can you make the videos 5 or 10 minutes longer? We love seeing her eat and making friends with another elephant and just being with another elephant. We also would love to see more of the interaction between Lec and the elephant or between any other person who shows love to her. Seeing her get medical help is wonderful.

What is the story behind the mahout? He seems to be a caring person & willing to let Kajana retire but how will he earn his living now?

Unfortunately, they usually let the elephants go after only they can no longer use them for trekking or logging, etc. So, many of the elephants that ENP rescues are ones that are at the end of their working life, full of injuries and in poor health. To them, it's like letting a charity come pick up your old refrigerator so you don't have to get rid of it yourself. :-( There are some, though, that learn from Lek's example and choose to switch to a saddle-off business model similar to Elephant Nature Park's - instead of selling rides, they let visitors come and see/feed the elephants. It's much more humane, but probably much more difficult financially.

Yes, they have multiple sets of teeth over a lifetime that get worn out. Ones kept in captivity (fed lots of cheap, sugary bananas instead of the normal diet of leafy plants they would eat while foraging in the wild) lose their last set too early and live out the rest of their days without teeth. You'll see many rescued by ENP that have to be fed a diet of soft, mushy food because they no longer have teeth. It's really sad.

Poor baby - look at damage to her feet and ankles, and the terrible damage to her skin - years of not being able to cover herself in mud to protect from the sun and bugs. ;-( I don't think there's anything more important in the world than taking care of these elephants and other animals like these (orangutans, injured wildlife, endangered species, etc.).

When i was little i used to think that elephant trunks were periscopes, lol, that was a long time ago. It still amuses me to imagine they are, especially when they poke them out of the water or over the side of the truck.
