He wont break the 2hrs, as the pace required would require him to set off at a speed no pace runner could hope to keep up with. I think he will come very close to his current WR of 2-1-39, and maybe take a few seconds off it, but there are no pace runners alive, who can pace him under 2hrs, in an open race.

In his recent interview, Kipchoge said: "I still believe that I can run a course record in Berlin, if not a world record it is a course record. I don't know which one will come in but I will call it a course record." The current course record of Berlin is also the world record so if he's aiming to run a course record, means he's aiming at the official world record.

He races so infrequently, that when he does enter a particular race, its with a purpose in mind. Statistics have shown, if he enters a race, then he usually wins it. He has won Berlin on four occasions, and set his WR there, so the only reason he is showing up, is to lower his WR. Only two athletes have ever gone below 2hrs 2min, himself, and Bekele. Bekele is a spent force, so to improve on his WR time, will make it increasingly difficult to beat in the future.
@ddebenedictis

He answered the question "what do you plan next?" by saying "I'm an an African, and in Africa we chase one rabbit at a time, as a team, so right now there are no plans" Love the way he thinks. Plus, I think it's perhaps more difficult to keep answering the same questions, and be patient with all the media and attention than running the race!

If he makes sub 2:00 on any open field, eligible marathon course, he would claim for me the crown of the greatest athlete of all time. He's already one of the greatest the world has ever seen, but this would be just another level, on top of his already incredible pantheon of successes. All eyes on Berlin people. He's got to be eyeing at least a new world record on Sunday, to have switched from the NYC Marathon. But let's see what unfolds. Bekele showed what is possible at the age Eliud is at now, back in 2019 - it's looking a mouth watering race...!

The reason he can continue aged 37, when others are a spent force at that age, is that he only races when he needs to. All other athletes need to race to make ends meet, hence their shortened career after 35yrs or so, their bodies are wrecked or unable to take the stress of training at such a high level. Kipchoge has made his money, from lucrative sponsorship deals and endorsements, and his incredible consistency in setting WR at the marathon. he only races when he feels ready.and is able to give it everything. If he is not ready, then he does not race, so his body has more recovery time, than most other elite runners. This is why he is running at elite level, long after most runners are a spent force, because he has remained injury free, and can pick and choose which races he wants to run. He is under no financial pressure to race when his body tells him to rest.

He will definitely break the world record of 2:01:39. He might also go under 2 hours. This is based on the fact that he ran the 4th fastest marathon this year on a course (Tokyo) he's not familiar with, lost 10-12 seconds by running the wrong way, and that they ran against a strong wind. Also, people questioning Kipchoge on several occasions if a person can run under 2 hours in a normal marathon might push him to run a sub-2-hour marathon. Furthermore, Kipchoge said, what he will run will either be a world record or a course record. His particular words were, "I still believe that I can run a course record in Berlin. If not a world record, it is a course record. " From these words, I guess he assumes 1:59 is already a world record (but we all know it's not an unofficial wr) and might go below it, hence creating an official sub-2, or come close to it, thus creating a new course record in Berlin (and still a new official wr based on what we know). Or what did he mean, because the official world record is at 2:01:39? Listen at 3:05. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGGxq2iCpLqsiLM Mimi wako mchanganuzi wa mbio za masafa marefu

IMO, when he says such things as "good race" "let's run a very good race" he is thinking of WR! And when he improves a WR, he doesn't just improves it a bit...he improves a BIG CHUNK on it, knowing Kipchoge's mindset, and discipline I guess he is going for a SUB 2 now in BRLN, he knows there is not much time left for him, next year Paris Olympics-which he very well may win AGAIN-then only God knows....but now, he wants to demonstrate to everyone SUB2 is possible as we all know, he has done it once!

I wish over the last 5 years Bekele and Kipchoge would have been going head to head instead of doing everything they could to avoid each other. Can you imagine if they had run against each other maybe 10 times they could have pushed and paced each other to under 2 hours several times. As it is since no one else is in their class they get no pushing or pacing over the last 10 miles. Sure as mentioned if you weren't feeling great on race day you would lose but you have to figure at least half the time they would have been at peak performance and they might have both broken 2 hours.

You can tell that the man is racing against time in both senses of the word (marathon time and age). He KNOWS that sub 2 is possible, he KNOWS that he deserves to be the first to do it, but he also knows that his window can't stay open forever. As for the upcoming event - like you said, it mostly boils down to his form at the day. Sure, he is a veritable machine, but everyone who runs knows that you can have days where you don't believe your watch because you might be a lot slower or faster than it feels.

Betting against GOAT Kipchoge would be a mistake. Athletes have run sub 58s and 59s in Half Marathons as recent as September 2022 in Copenhagen. The dynamics of half marathons are different, but I am looking forwards to limit getting pushed in Berlin. May the Lord be with Kipchoge as he attempts a shot at history making again

He will win for sure, be on record pace till 35 km then realize he can't make it and cruise home to a 2:02 not being out of breath when crossing the finish line. My hope ofc is that he proves me wrong and runs 60:20 - 60:30 for the first half and then throws the hammer down and wins in 2:00:10 - 2:00:40 (But I doubt it)

My guess: New WR for sure -Sub 2hr finish: it’s a 50/50 chance (I would love to see it happen) but the course isn’t as smooth as Vienna….it still has some sharp turns. Not to mention how ungodly difficult it is to cover 26.2 in that time (regardless of the course). But if there’s anyone capable of doing it….for sure it’s Kipchoge!

Based on Kipchoge’s outstanding form in Tokyo, and looking at the Berlin times relative to Tokyo times of some of the other past winners, I'm gonna say he lowers his world record to ~2:01:15. But this is also the GOAT we’re talking about, and he should know this is likely his last best chance to put some real distance between his official PR and everyone else’s. With that in mind, I could realistically see as low as ~2:00:55 if everything goes super well. Sub-2, or even a close miss, would shock me, but never say never!
