I’ve been using DIY laundry soap (I don’t make the soap, I buy a laundry soap bar , grate and add washing soda) as well and wow people get annoyed (online) and tell me that it doesn’t work. I get lectured about soap vs detergent. Anyways, have been using for years and never experienced the ill effects that some sites/ people say “might” happen. Wanting an eco friendly, cruelty free product and clean clothes...I’m quite satisfied with the diy. I’d say try it for yourself and see what you think.

I used an old magic bullet and the fines cheese grate worked good. It doesn´t matter if super dirty workshop working trousers of my love, my own fitness dancing or gardening outfits, fatty kitchen towels or period pants... no matter if colourful, or white... I need soooo few of it, only 2 table spoons of it for a whole load (of a european 6 kg ) front loader) the laundry is super clean and has an amazing scent of lemongras, orange and peppermint like my origin cleaning soap (whit´ch I consided too good for "just cleaning" ) without further perfuming! Hi Elly! I suffer from severe skin allergies and cannot use the majority of soaps out there due to being allergic to fragrance and coconut oil (which is in pretty much everything). I discovered your recipe on how to make olive oil soap and cannot wait to try this! My question regarding the laundry soap is, can I use olive oil soap flakes? I subscribed to your channel and cannot wait to watch more of your videos :) Thank you for all you do!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Brenda! That's a great question you ask. Olive oil soap made with a low or zero superfat should clean your clothes reasonably well, but it won't have quite the same power as a coconut oil soap would have. Do you have any access to sustainably sourced palm oil, lard or beef tallow? Those, mixed with olive oil, would make a more cleansing soap. You'd have to calculate a recipe for the new combination though. I hope that helps :)

Washing Soda is Sodium Carbonate Na2CO3, whereas, baking soda is Sodium Bicarbonate NaHCO3.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking5 жыл бұрын
Thank you :)
@Elric5094 жыл бұрын
You can turn the bicarbonate into carbonate, put it in a stainless steel pot and heat it on your stove until it turns white and stops bubbling, be careful not to get burned and wait for it to cool before using it
@7of9jml4 жыл бұрын
You can also make washing soda by baking it in the oven to remove one of the water and carbon dioxide molecules. Heat the oven to 400F(200C), spread regular baking soda onto a baking sheet about 1/2" thick (12mm), and bake for 1 hour, stirring twice. Let cool and store in airtight container until ready to use. **Caution: wear a mask or be very careful breathing while stirring or transferring to/from the container; washing soda (store bought or homemade). It's more caustic and lighter than baking soda and it's not hard to accidentally breathe in any airborne superfine dust particles. "Not hard" as in seriously easy. It took me two times making it before I figured out the cause of my painfully dry, slightly bloody nose.

Baking soda is made from washing soda that's been halfway neutralized with carbonic acid. If you bake baking soda in an oven, you can drive out the carbonic acid (it breaks down into carbon dioxide and steam) and turn the baking soda back into washing soda.
