Thank you for this amazing video! First heard Love Hurts on the B side of a Roy Orbinson 45 record in 1962. Always wondered why it was on the B side. I loved it. I believe hands down that Dan of Nazareth nailed it. You can feel the pain. Even the guitar cries!

I saw Nazareth twice. I don't own any of their albums, but they definitely "own" this song! You've got to give it up for Phil and Don, though. Those boys could sing like angels. Vocal harmonies and songs that make a grown man cry. They were really something. Then there's Roy Orbison. How can a person have so much soul in their voice? He brings you right along with him every time that he sings one of his tales of woe, emoting with a sound born of his own personal heartache. RIP, Roy. Lastly, I've never seen Jim Capaldi out in front of a band. He sings a lot like Roy, doesn't he? Also, for those who maybe don't know it, Jim didn't make his fame as a singer, but as the drummer for Traffic. Another of those great bands that you won't hear much of if you only listen to music played on the radio...

@@ckobo84 I strongly disagree. People tend to remember a song the way that they heard it the first time. Radio DJs don't go through previous versions of a song and play what they consider the best, they woule tend to play the latest version simply because that will be the one that the record companies haveforewarded to the radio statiion. The voices and harmoonies in the Everley Brothers' version the best, in my opinion.

Hands down. Nazareth takes this song to a whole other level. Guitar solo itself cries “love hurts”. Although I grew up in the lates 70s and 80s and their version was played on every juke box in every pool hall and bowling alley I went to. Memories are powerful! So I’m a little bias.

Music is not a contest, it is an art. Many opinions are based on what era we grew up in, which versions we heard first and years of developing musical preference from childhood, radio exposure and peer pressure. These are different t interpretations and arrangements of a well written song. Time top give the writer credit: "Love Hurts" is a song written and composed by the American songwriter Boudleaux Bryant.

Nazareth's version is by far the best. They poured their hearts into it. The Everly Brothers sang it well, but without much feeling. Same with Roy Orbison. After 5 or 6 seconds of Jim Capaldi's nightmare, I skipped on to Nazareth to check out your reaction to theirs.

All great in their own right...but for pure heartache and the lonely as well as the soul in the voice which matches the lyrics it has to be Roy Kelton Orbison or the Big O ..as Elvis said the only singer who intimidated him and the best in the world. Bob Dylan when working with him as part of the Travelling Wilbury's stood next to him and muttered "How on earth can he sing like that... how does he do it adding that he had chills down his spine when he sang". I'm always for the 'happy there's different flavors' camp....but as long as you're asking, this time around I wholeheartedly go for Roy Orbison's. His voice and the instrumentation bring out the pain and loneliness. Nazareth's version also emotes pain but I just never cared for that delivery. Emylou has a version but I've not heard it yet. Bet it's good.

Cool concept Elok! I think it is a testament to the quality of the song that all of the versions you reacted to were very good, although Jim “Medallion Man” Capaldi’s cover was my least favourite. However, much like Jimi Hendrix’s version of “All Along the Watchtower” and Sinead O’Connor’s version of “Nothing Compares to U”, for me, Nazareth’s cover is the definitive version of “Love Hurts”. If you wanted to do more comparison videos in this vein, you could listen to Joni Mitchell’s “This Flight Tonight” and Nazareth’s cover, or Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust” and Judas Priest’s cover. Van Halen also did a bunch of covers on their early albums which you might be interested in comparing with the originals, including a cover of “Oh Pretty Woman”, which Roy Orbison co-wrote and recorded. Rock on ! 🤘🏻

Elok, I wonder if anyone realizes that Jim Capaldi was founder, drummer, singer and songwriter in the band Traffic (along with Steve Winwood). Traffic has a great catalog of classic rock (NOT disco) that I really think you'd enjoy reacting to. Try the song "Dear Mr. Fantasy," or if you want a good one with Capaldi on vocals, try the song "Rock and Roll Stew." Regardless I love seeing your love of this music, not to mention your beautiful smile!
