💛🙏 Thank you for this lovely message, which really made me happy! 😊 Yes, I have a recommendation: I always use the Cambridge Online Dictionary. It's a browser website, but it does everything you want: - IPA for British 🇬🇧 & American 🇺🇸 pronunciation - you can also listen to both versions - the IPA shows syllable boundaries & word stress I don't think there's a well-working app that does the same, so I use it as a website. Try it out, it's really good! 😊👍

Hello, Billie, I have the Elsa app and have subscribed for a year. I am facing a challenge during practice sessions. Only the first word I say is heard by the coach, while the rest are silent. Additionally, the app crashes and closes during practice. What do you suggest I do about this issue?

Hello! Thank you for your comment, and I'll try to help, though please note that I do not work for ELSA and have no direct access to their tech team. I have a 3 year old Samsung Galaxy A71 and I just used ELSA quite a lot before making the video. While I used it, it never froze or closed down. The voice recognition worked well too as you can see in the video when I'm using ELSA AI conversation. I've also used ELSA many times before and never experienced what you described. In any case, after I read your comme t I went to the Google app store and read over the latest reviews because if this happens to several people, they are likely to write about that in the review section. But there wasn't anything mentioned about the app shutting down. So, I suspect this issue might be more related to your mobile phone? I recommend using a friend's phone and logging on there to your account and see if the problem persists. This way you could identify where the problem is. Also make sure the app is updated and maybe switch your phone on and off. I hope this helps! 🙏😊

Hello Ignasi! Thank you for your comment. I am sorry to hear you had a different experience that I had on the app - it worked all fine when I used it (see video). Just to clarify: this is not my app. I tested it and reviewed it here and recommend it to my students. But I am not the ELSA tech team. What I advise you to do is contact the ELSA support team. You can find their email address and contact form on the official ELSA speak website. Another idea would also be to leave feedback in the app store as most apps respond their really fast. Excuse me, I am a pro user of Elsa and I am so happy to know that you are going to review the app because sometimes I struggle with some sentences and I would like to know if that happens to native English speakers like you who have a different accent from the American one. I would like to find out if it is the app that only works with American sounds/accents and if it identifies other accents as incorrect, I hope you can understand what I am trying to say because English is not my native language :), sorry for the possible mistakes. Hello! Thank you for your comment and questions. I will try to answer them all: About the accent: Yes, ELSA trains you in a neutral American accent. I have found that this usually means it corrects a British accent only when you do not add an American R sound to R-controlled vowels, e.g. words such as 'her' or 'water' in British English they would just use a vowel sound here, but in American English it is an R-coloured vowel sound. This is usually corrected by ELSA. I haven't noticed that any other vowels are corrected (I have a bit more of a British accent) so ELSA seems to accept various pronunciations here. About the score: I don't think the app is programmed to give 100% often, I often get 90 - 99% or something slightly lower. I always tell my students to aim for 85% or higher but not to worry too much about the exact number. However, if the score is lower than 85% it is pretty certain you mispronounced something and should try again. At times, it might be that you are too far away (or even too close) to your microphone or there is background noise that might influence the result, so I recommend practising in a quiet environment and keeping the mobile phone mic about 25-30 cm in front of you so you can see the screen and talk at the same time. Aww I understand! It is normal to have a higher level when you are listening, reading or writing compared to speaking because you have more time to think and prepare. It trains you in a neutral American accent. Remember that ELSA is a pronunciation app. You will probably also learn some new vocabulary, but the main focus is to help you improve your speaking!
