Bernie Taupin: ""The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. My brother Daniel drove me to the airport for my journey home after spending 3 wonderful, endearing and memorable months with him. He had been diagnosed with Non-hodgkin's Lymphoma and given 3 months. The last thing I remember of him that evening was his tight, tight hug with a promise that we will meet again. As he walked away from me, I kept watching him....he turned, looked over his shoulder, gave me a wink and the peace sign. He would never say good-bye....only, see you soon. He passed away 3 months later almost to the day. This song keeps our hearts close and our memories alive. "BEST BABY BRO EVER"!!

He had spent a few years at Ft Campbell and would frequently come home on 4 day weekends. When I was 6 he got stationed in Germany. I was going to go at least a year without seeing him. As we were leaving the airport this song came on. I cried for an hour. For our dad, and for my brother. My brother and sister in law were able to get me a military space available flight back to Germany with them when they came home on leave after 18 months. The last 4 years of his 26 year army career was the first 4 of mine. We lost him 3 years ago to brain cancer

When I was younger my dad got really sick. He was in the hospital for a few weeks and my younger brother and I didn't get to visit for a while. When we did visit he was not in great shape but my mom and the nurses were saying he had gotten through the worst parts of it. He was so happy to see us and was able to go for a short walk with us around the hospital, which was a big deal. I was so sad seeing him like this but he couldn't be happier. He said that while he was resting in bed he was listening to the radio and this song came on and gave him the motivation to fight to get better. We'd always love hearing this song over the years because my name is Daniel and he pictured my younger brother singing it to me. We'd always sing along joking to my brother that "Daniel my brother you are older than me!" This gets me really emotional. Kids when you're going through those awkward teenage years and you want nothing to do with your parents I urge you to get closer. They're not going to be around forever. Enjoy the limited time on Earth with your parents.

While reading tears came to my eyes. One of the most touching stories... the best about this song I have read so far. Hope your father recovered well. Good message to youngsters too.

I like how even back in these days. Elton is singing live to the recorded track. He would do that a lot over the years on TV shows.

Had a friend named, Dan. Originally from England, but had been living in Los Angeles for nearly a decade. He was a professional butler. Still rocked the accent nicely. His wife was a pro-Domme at a local dungeon. Interesting couple to say the least. He ended up working on a yacht for a week that Elton was sailing on. He sang this to Dan a couple of days into the excursion when he heard it was his birthday. That's a CLASS ACT there!!!

ELTON JOHN List of all time best selling recording artists - Records/CD's/iTunes? One of the mighty. The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Elton, ... Yeah, he is a great piano player and a fantastic songwriter but listening to his early albums gotta say what a truly magnificent singing voice Elton had in the 1970's --> and it's on display for all to hear in this video. One of the finest I ever heard.

Hey, I wanna tell you a personal story about this song...I know most people won't care about that text, but it's nice to share it. I'm spanish, and I was born in 1995, 2-3 years before my birth, my mum was listening to this song while driving the car and she thought Daniel would be a nice name for her son if she had one; she didn't speak english, she only understood a few words of the song. A week ago she told me about this song and "the story", so here I am, listening to it. (What a beautiful song!) But, the most interesting fact about all of this is that... I love planes and aviation since I was a child, and I'm gonna obtain my pilot license after college.

Yeah, I heard that there'll be shortage of pilots until 2030, approx, especially in development countries. Thank you so much for your words, I'm a little bit more encouraged to become a pilot.
