Elton’s a different breed in this version

@Bruh1986.dude I know your a true fan, but I get so tired of every one referring to ejs well documented coke habit, it’s quite possible he was under the influence that day, I don’t know, but one can see many reasons for his stage presence, which I don’t think was that unusual for a great entertainer. He’s playing to a worldwide audience, one of the biggest acts on the bill, a historic day for rock, why wouldn’t he be giddy, or whatever the poster meant by being a different breed…the band rocked, he played one of the longest sets, and this don’t go breaking rocked, I think as good as 1976, especially Kiki, who punished that stage with her presence. I know your cool , I know we’d be pals if we met, but respectfully, uuuugh I can’t stand people saying every time ej seems weird, it’s coke..truth is, I’ve seen him act quite weird when he wasn’t on coke…he can be weird , and I don’t think he was that weird that day. I’ve seen him way weirder, his 50 th bday was weird. He wasn’t on drugs that day.

I'm sorry but can we take a second to appreciate the horn section... The notes they hit are phenomenal! Kiki and Elton completely nail performance, hats off
@tylerseboe
@tylerseboe 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe, I don't think the horn section sounded phenomenal but the engineering was so terrible (minimal sound checks for the whole production) that it's hard to tell. I've heard and read stories that the reason Queen sounded so amazing was part due to their greatness and part due to their sound engineer. And that's, perhaps, why the Thompson Twins sounded so awful. Regardless, Kiki sounded great, even while dancing, and Elton brought great energy and piano playing (vocals were not perfect, IMO...I'm not his biggest fan).

@@tylerseboeI watched it on tv back then .. We never noticed the bad sound . The TV were mono, some stereo, we recorded on V2000 or VHS tape with a lot of loss.. we didn’t know better . But I can still feel the energy and power of bands like Queen and Elton John ,maybe vocally not on his best , he gives himself 200% . Just like the others and that makes this concert so memorable . Time flies .

@@hannaj4032 The only reason that Elton ran back and proclaimed that Queen had "stolen the show"... Was because Queen's performance had stolen the show. Elton had a great performance but Queen's rose to, and transcended, how big Live Aid 1985 really was. Playing your hits for your fans is one thing but completely merging with a worldwide audience is something else altogether. Argue "who's better" all you want but in 1985, for 20 minutes, the entire world was in the palm of Freddie Mercury's hand. Queen simply provided the world the greatest 20 mins of rock showmanship in the history of music. And the proof is everyone, young and old, keeps going back to the videos to re-live it or experience it for the first time. Live Aid 1985 gathered the best of the best music talent in the world and from the best of the best only Queen took it to another level. A level unheard of and and thus, 37 yrs later, it is still talked about today. And you don't have to take my word for it...take Elton John's...easily one of the top 10 rock icons in music history...a man who has put on, or watched, some of the greatest concerts on earth...and he said Queen "stole the show."

As a big fan during his classic era - this song/non album cut 45 single seemed like a formula commercial duet sell- out in 1976. Huge song that summer - number 1 for weeks on both sides of the pond. This live version is vastly superior to 45 rpm version that was played on AM radio. Really enjoyed this version. I was 23 at the time of Live Aid in Ottawa Canadá - a friend had his parents house and swimming pool for the weekend. Big party. We wheeled the colour TV onto the patio ...with live aid piped through his stereo speakers at max volume. It was 95 degree hot - and everyone was gathered around the tv set watching our music idols and enjoying cold beer.....great time to be young. Elton, paul McCartney, Queen, Bowie, Clapton, U2, dire straits, and newer acts like simple minds, electrovox....then the show started in Philly..

What a fabulous and energetic performance by all! And you can tell from the original 1976 promo video, and this live performance, that Elton and Kiki have such good chemistry! The intangibles like that really matter in taking a song to the next level, as good as the physical aspects of singing, playing, etc. are. I love this! This song takes me back to my childhood, 5 years old, Summer of '76, living in North St. Louis, on Warren and 14th St. :)
