Somewhat celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Elvis' triumphant return to New York City after a 15 year absence in 1972, this is the version of the Simon & Garfunkel classic that comes closest to the one performed at Madison Square Garden on June 9th, 1972. Having witnessed Elvis' reading of his song, Paul Simon is said to have noted: "That's it, we might as well all give up now."
This version here has been shot on 16 mm film for the Golden Globe Award winning rockumentary "Elvis on Tour" at the Greensboro Coliseum in front of 16,300 people on April 14th, 1972. Eight weeks to the day before Elvis record braking appearance at Madison Square Garden.

The best version of a fantastic song written by one of the best duos of all time. Used to play this on repeat to and from the hospital twice a day visiting my wife in the Christie while she was in IC after a stem cell transplant. It got me through a tough time. This is such an excellent version of what Elvis just called “Bridge”. It was filmed on April 14th, 1972 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina for use in “Elvis On Tour”. When Elvis and Estelle Brown of the Sweet Inspirations (who was incredibly versatile herself BTW) hit that high note together and she backs away from the mic and yells “yeah” and Elvis smiles and acknowledges her..that’s a spontaneous, light hearted and great moment to see. Elvis loved this vocally challenging song and performed it in concert periodically from the time it was released in the summer of 1970 (by its original songwriters Simon & Garfunkel, of course) until the his last concert appearance in the summer of 1977. And as fans...we’re all better served for it!

@@vayenquist4969 The absolute GREATEST; the whole band! The T.C.B. Band - The best in the biz, FOR the best in the biz. That is such a major reason why I like these '72 and on performances. They're in their groove with Elvis, they know him, The Sweet Inspirations are beautiful, and The Stamps, well, no need to explain that one. Elvis is phenomenal here, and I say as the '70s go on, he gets better. there are off/rougher nights for sure, but for example, American Trilogy from this same concert, versus a version from '75, is no match. I love '75 Elvis in general. Forget 1970 in Vegas. THIS is the Bridge Over Troubled Water you WANT!

I love rock and roll from the '60s and '70s, although I was born only in 1975. I'm a die-hard Led Zeppelin fan. I love the Beatles, I love U2, I love the Eagles. I've seen Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Page & Plant, and many other legendary musicians/bands in concert. But if I could go back in time and attend only one concert, without any question or hesitation whatsoever it would be an Elvis Presley concert. I've adored Elvis for about 30 years, and he will always be my single favorite entertainer who ever existed. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, will ever be able to top Elvis's talent, charisma, mystique, aura, or whatever you want to call it. To me, he's become more than just a human being. He's almost like a superhuman character in some sort of legend told over many centuries. This video clip of Elvis is absolutely jaw-dropping and mind-blowing. I've seen this clip many, many times over the years, and I still get chills and feel emotional when I see it. This performance of this song takes me into some other dimension where nothing else matters. Elvis will live on for countless generations to come.

@@nspector That would be a tough choice! I always thought maybe something ca. 1972 like this one. I love it when he started with See See Rider instead of That's All Right. And I think '72 was a high point in his touring career since he had his show well developed and he hadn't yet reached the stage (pun intended) when he was sort of going through the motions of performing. From the audio & video that I've seen/heard, I'd say probably his evening show in Hampton Roads on April 9, 1972. But honestly, if I could go back in time, I'd be happy & thrilled seeing any concert of his!
@nspector

@@ed801975 Ahh, good choice. Thanks for answering. Me, especially from that year, I think I'd go to Madison Square Garden. I LOVE the idea of him being just as mesmerizing in snobby NY as anywhere else. Even more so, I think, than in many other concerts around that time. (I'm from NY haha, so I can say that from experience. Tho, of course, there were people there from outside of the city. But still, I love that he left the critics awestruck in New York City, critic who had likely been dismissive of him previous.)

Simon and Garfunkel did a good job on this song, but Elvis owns it. The greatest entertainer this world has ever seen, and will see. Elvis left us too soon, God only knows why. He had the looks, the charisma, the talent, and the voice. Other entertainer's may have one or two, but Elvis had the whole package, one of a kind entertainer. Michael Jackson to his credit would be second. Elvis is at peace with God, and will lead God's choir when he is asked to.

Elvis sang this song 191 times in concert from the first time on 10/8/70 opening night for TTWII season and the last time on 26/6/77 his final ever concert! Despite singing it 191 times there are two versions best known to us, the version from 11/8/70 which was included in the film TTWII and this version from April 72 included in the film Elvis on tour! Therefore these two versions have been debated mostly with fans giving their opinions on what version they prefer! To me this is hands down my favourite version of all the versions I have heard and much better than the version from two years earlier!

Only Elvis could take such an originally morose song and turn it into a burning triumph like this. Some other interesting points of note; - It goes to show JUST how talented singers were back in the day. I mean look at the old ass mic he's using and he STILL sounds incredible. - The fact Elvis looks at and even has fun with (Hit that high note at 3:41 baby!) his band and backup singers shows his sheer professionalism, dedication to the performance and understanding to pull off such a big arrangement like this, he cannot do it alone - something you'd seldom see in today's big stars. - During the summer season in Vegas when Elvis first started performing this version, Paul Simon attended one of the shows, and, after seeing Elvis perform the song, he was reported to have said, "That's it, we might as well all give up now." Truly one of kind - may his memory be celebrated forevermore.

TimothySideburns Well, not much to say but that he was incredible, of course! Saw him at the Hilton in Vegas, in Long Beach and in L.A. Did take my old 8mm film camera and got a couple minutes of silent footage...but from so far away, all you see is a little figure all in white, with flash bulbs going off like crazy! Oh, to have actual, decent footage with sound!! Sadly, memories fade.

Well ya know what everyone is entitled to their own personal opinion, doesn't necessarily mean that another person may agree with it one way or another, that's what makes us all individuals, so if that's your opinion and it you're happy with it then more power to ya.
