Embracing Your Age And Dealing With Change. In the video the British Dapper talks about embracing your age rather than trying to still dress like you did when you were in your 20s or 30s. He talks about the difference between being the best you can be now, not to be dated or dressing old than you are either.
He talks about being well groomed not only in your hair, but your beard or moustache, if you have one. Get regular health checks. Making a difference and having a positive attitude to wearing those items can really make a difference.
We hope you enjoy the video. If you do, please feel free to forward it and recommend it to friends or family members who you feel might benefit from it’s content.

I turn 75 in about 8 weeks. I'm fit and mobile. I wear Fedora's, Trilby's and Flat Caps, leather shoes and natural fibers. I dress appropriately. My style is the dressy side of casual. OBDC with ties and Sport Coats. The message I project is 'I haven't given up'. I consider myself intentionally well dressed and I regularly receive poitive feedback in that regard. I do what you have suggested in this video have done these things my entire adult life. I agree with you and my life experience is consistent with your message. I enjoy your videos and your practical sartorial opinions and advice.

Thanks for your insight and contribution Clyde. Age is but a number, making the best of ones self, intentionally dressing to look and feel good about yourself is fundamental to a persons wellbeing. Dress appropriate to your age and dressing well, will get you compliments all day long and its a good form of conversation starter as well. Loneliness is also something to avoid at all costs as well, it affects your mental health and can set of off on a path of giving up in some ways or not bothering or caring what you look like. Glad you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you have an extensive wardrobe and wear it well. Thank you for your support👍🙂

Well said, Chris. Five years after coming out of a failed relationship, I had really let myself go. This channel has transformed how I look and re-energised my confidence and self esteem. Thanks to a permanent lifestyle dietary and exercise change, I have discovered that my clothes look and fit best now that I am at my correct weight, and shirts frayed at the collar and cuffs belong in recycling rather than a wardrobe. A regular haircut more in keeping with my 60+ years, and proper attention to my shaving and personal grooming, means that my reflection in the bathroom mirror now looks more like the man I once was than the dishevelled specimen I had become. You would never guess that most of my wardrobe of `new’ top quality labelled attire was bought second hand off eBay, and that even thirty-year old suits and jackets can still look the business, professionally cleaned plus a little detailed tailoring. My ageing Loake shoes have been transformed now that they are re-soled, re-heeled and highly polished. The end result? When you are smartly turned out for any business or social event, you not only look the part, you feel the part, and that empowers you to act the part. Just one compliment on your appearance is all it takes for your confidence to brim that the extra effort you have made has all been worthwhile. Thank you, British Dapper!

Hi John, thank you for sharing your incredible journey. It's inspiring to hear how you've taken control of your life and confidence after a challenging period. Your commitment to a healthier lifestyle and your attention to personal grooming is truly commendable. It's amazing how a few changes can make such a significant impact on others as well as your self. Your story is a testament to the power of self-care and the positive effects it can have on our overall well-being. Keep shining those shoes, ironing those shirts and pressing those trousers and thanks for being a part of this growing group. Empowering others in our little community, building self esteem and looking sharp as always John is a pleasure to me. Lovely to hear from you again as always 👍🙂

I was born in the mid fifties, so I was twenty one in the mid seventies, one of the worst periods for mens style. My heroes of style were Cary Grant and David Niven, not Mick Jagger or David Bowie. I'm now in my late sixties. I knew that if I lived long enough the world of fashion would eventually catch up with me. 😂

It is kind of funny, we grew up poor so teased about my lack of hip clothing as a child. I was wearing button up (albeit short sleeve) shirts and khakis. Now I am just getting back into dressing up when I can, not all of us have jobs where we can wear suits. Another KZbinr said your 50s are the youth of old age, so enjoy it now.

Hi there, I can imagine how growing up with those experiences might shape your perspective on clothing. It's interesting how styles change, and it's great that you're getting back into dressing up now. I totally get it, not everyone has a job that allows for suits. That quote about the 50s being the youth of old age is quite thought-provoking. It's never too late to embrace the things that make us happy! Do you have any favourite styles or outfits you enjoy wearing these days?

It would have to be my overcoats as they are cheap to buy second hand, and stand alone as a rather stylish item. With a pair of dress shoes and decent pants, you can wear a scarf and not fuss with shirt and tie if you are just going to be outside. Turtleneck sweaters can be worn with them in the winter. My yellow plaid Charles Tyrwhitt one is lighter for fall and spring. Even my naval peacoat looks stylish and the one overcoat where a wool watch cap doesn't look out of place as both have a naval history.@@TheBritishDapper

Thanks Chris. This video is definitely apposite for me as I turn 50 this year! In common with other people who've commented, I've definitely upped my style game in the last few years. As I have a professional job, its definitely nice to be thought of as one of the best dressed men in the office. Also, compliments are lovely, not sure how much my wife appreciates random women telling me I look good though! For me, a lot of it is bound up with my age. I'm in a place where I want to be respected and treated a certain way, and that means dressing well. My personal view is that it is also a way of showing respect to others. On a slightly different note, I'm also a believer in smelling great! A nice fragrance goes a long way too. Fragrance is also weirdly 'age appropriate'. For example, I don't think I'd wear something like Cool Water now, but I can now wear something like Polo Green - definitely an 'older man', masculine fragrance. Keep on with the great content!

It's fantastic that you're making strides in both your personal and professional image. And I totally get the random compliments struggle - it's nice to be acknowledged, but I hear you on the wife's perspective! 😄 Your perspective on dressing well as a form of mutual respect is spot-on. It's amazing how our personal style can reflect our desire for recognition and how we wish to be treated. Also, couldn't agree more about the power of a great fragrance! It's like the finishing touch to a polished look. Thanks for sharing your fragrance insights too - Polo Green is a classic choice nowadays🙂 I appreciate your support and encouragement. Keep looking sharp and smelling great 👍🙂

I turned 80 last month. Have 4 major medical problems and have been indoors 3 years due to Covid. I left only to go to doctor appointments. I used to dress sharply and have a fantastic wardrobe which is classic and seems to still be in style. My wife purchased 8 custom Egyptian cotton shirts for me in 1980 when I was promoted to senior insurance investigator. Four of them are like new and still fit perfectly. I am a 40 regular and still weigh about 3 pounds less than I did all my life. I have 1 pair of new Floresheim Shoes that I put away 20 years ago and two like new blazers, a double breasted Navy Blazer, a navy pin stripped suit and 5 ties I loves. All in mint condition. Bought a bottle of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille cologne, went to a great barber, and got dressed up for the first time in 20 years. Went to church, and then to a restaurant, dressed in navy sport jacked, grey trousers, new shoes, new hair cut, favorite navy tie with red and white stripes and got 3 compliments in an hour, one by a lovey woman who is unknown to me, who said, " You look fantastic". Made my day. Felt like a million dollars and had so much confidence. Your video is right on. I will continue to enjoy life now, feeling like a million bucks instead of an old fart.

Dressing in the classic style is timeless, one cant go wrong. Its also inspired me to make some new additions to compliment pieces that bi hadn't worn in years and have put back into service. Its certainly made me appreciate what ive got and i feel.a lot more comfortable dressing in the classic style rather than trying to be something that im not. Thanks for all the great content.

I think that older gents can often look way more dapper than younger men. Older gents tend to have more disposable $$.. = high fashion brands = dapper style.
@TheBritishDapper
@TheBritishDapper 8 ай бұрын
Hi there, disposable income can be an issue, but I have found with experience that it is cheaper in this day and age to find high quality pre-worn items for less money than cheap high street fashion items. Experience and knowledge has a lot to play in the way a person presents themselves. Knowledge of what suits a person the most and compliments their complexation and intended style is a major factor and that might account for why older gents can look more dapper, but it is not exclusive to them, young men can learn and grow their own sense of style as well👍🙂 Glad you enjoyed the video 👍🙂

A great video I really needed to hear. It sounds so silly, but If I'm true to myself, becoming 40 is challenging me, because my 30s were just absolutely sensational, married my soul partner, welcomed my children and moved ambitiously in my career and feeling somewhat as if I've peaked, as you've said I wear glasses now, greying on the beard and the backs not doing great 🤣 I particularly liked your line about what we lose in fashion we gain in experience and knowledge. @@TheBritishDapper I usually buy them from Ebay - often under the guise of "Sherlock Holmes hat", as the sellers do not know its real name. There is also a variety, called the "ghillie hat" with no earflaps and a circular brim. But if I buy them new I go to KEVIN & HOWLIN of 31, Nassau Street in Dublin or order them from GLENCROFT in the UK. The oldest one I have, I bought when I was 14 years of age, when I acquired one from DUNN & Co, one of my favourite traditional retailers. They had been around since the 19th century and were known to offer good, old-fashioned British garments. Unfortunately they'e been gone since the nineties.

I'm in my early 50s and only really started caring about my style 5 or so years ago, so I've been reinventing myself in middle age. I try to dress smartly in classic style, but also appropriately for what I'm doing at any given time. I wear fedoras a lot because I like the look of them and because they keep the sun off. I use flat caps in winter as they're a bit warmer. :)

@@TheBritishDapper Thank you for your reply and questions! I agree that it's never too late to start, and I've certainly invested a lot of time and money (I lost about 25kg over the pandemic, so had to replace my whole wardrobe) into learning about style and discovering what I love. I've also begun to introduce my son into good quality clothing :). The hats are great, and I particularly am enjoying the patch-style flatcap I got from Hanna Hats in Ireland. I have my suits and sports coats made by Mr. Cavaliere, a wonderful Toronto-based MTM designer who I can't recommend enough. For shirts, I tend to go with Proper Cloth- they cost more than RTW shirts, but I think the quality and fit are worth it, especially after I went to their store in New York to get a proper fitting. For trousers I use Spier and MacKay a lot, and am starting to try them for knitwear as well. I also have a lot of knitwear from Land's End. And for shoes I absolutely love Justin Fitzpatrick and Septième Largeur, both of whom make shoes that cost far less than their quality level. My style has developed into much more of a suited look than I used to embrace, both because of my job (a promotion to director level is part of what got me looking at my wardrobe) and also my stage of life (finding out what looks good and age appropriate for me). So I like to wear a suit or odd jacket and a shirt (dress or OCBD). I wear ties occasionally, and would like to wear them more. I do wear knits sometimes, both with tailoring and on their own. Trousers run the gamut from dark selvedge denim that I wear occasionally on casual days to cords to chinos and trousers. In summer I love linen (and when work takes me to hot countries, like my current trip to Indonesia), so I have brought all linen with me now- trousers, shirts, and tailoring. Hopefully this answers your questions! And thank you for the inspiration and information you share on your channel!
