that was AWSOME !!!!! I drove a dump truck that had an air starter, didn't sound Nothing likeThat! That would pure scare the shit right out of you if you happened to be by that thing when that went off! We have a siding at our shop. they use to load out our grain bins onto hoppers years ago. Now they use it to stage track repair and maintenance stuff when they are working in our area. It's a BNSF siding and have had engines overnight there several different times. Lucky for my shorts this has never happened!

squach623 !!!!! Modern locomotives like this one are equipped with autostart, which allows the engine to shut off periodically instead of just idling. In this mode, the prime mover starts up when the engine detects low temperature in the block, low air pressure in the main reservoir, or a couple other things. Since the SD70ACe specifically is air start, the MR pressure has to be kept a bit higher than on other engines so the prime mover can start back up.

I use to work for bnsf the Ace needs at least 45 psi of air to start, if not it needs an Air jump start. They will usually auto start at 60 psi in the main if there is a leak to build pressure back up to 120, but when they are down for repairs they usually bleed off below 60. you just take another locomotive and hook up the air lines or use shop air to fill the tanks up again.

Hello friend, once I started an sd70ace with 90 psi on the start reservoir, I think depends of the ambient temperature

Yes, I have started them at 90 too. It was close though.
@ralfie88014 ай бұрын
They won’t warm start with only 60 PSI in the start reservoir, let alone cold start. Cold being 70 degrees F ambient. Anything much under 90 PSI on a cold start is asking for a “use all the air without starting successfully” result.

BIG EMD engines. Nothing like them. Sheer brute power. Never quit.
@christianputt31136 жыл бұрын
I like auto starts a lot better. Because that way you don't have to manually start an engine. Auto starts save more time and you don't have to prime fuel into the engine.
@BenjaminEsposti5 жыл бұрын
The engine still has to be primed, but the computer takes care of that. Also, when the turbocharged engine is shut down, there is a pump that continues to run for some time, allowing the turbocharger bearing to cool down properly (this increases the lifespan of the seals and bearing).
@ralfie88014 ай бұрын
If you were outside this locomotive, you’d never know if it auto started or if someone manually started it. The start sequence is exactly the same. Edit: The soak back pump for the turbo comes on when the computers first boot up after closing all the breakers, then if the engine isn’t started before the soak back circuit times out, then it comes back on to prelude the turbo when the button is pushed to start the engine. The soak back times out after 20-30 minutes. Then, as stated before, the soak back pump comes on at engine shut down to cool the turbo until the circuit times out.

An "air motor" on the crank shaft turns the engine over instead of using an electric one. This saves batteries, has less wear and tear than an electric starter, and the air can be supplied from another locos compressor.
@erkinalp7 жыл бұрын
Electric start has the advantage of faster startup.
@All55556 жыл бұрын
Actually the air start is a lot faster then an electric start. With an air start as long as you have enough air in the tank or a external air source like another locomotive you can start them with even an almost depleted battery. You just need the battery to prime the fuel and release the air. I work on locomotives for a living. They both have to prime fuel before they crank and sometimes with the electric start especially GE's they can prime for up to 3 min. Then the starter kicks in and it is slower to start up.
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
@@erkinalp Air start is much faster.
@riedjacobsen86202 жыл бұрын
Similar to electric start. Air pressure pushes a pinion to engage a ring gear, while the air motor spins the engine up to speed. When engine starts, air is cut off an the pinion retracts back away from the ring gear.

if there is no air in the air tank how do they start it then? would they still have a starter motor?
@nscaler711official10 жыл бұрын
From what I've heard the auxiliary tank for the air start is that small tank toward the rear of the fuel tank.
@FFred-us9tw2 жыл бұрын
If the locomotive is in a consist it gets air through the MU hoses so it would never be out of air. If it's buy itself then it could be charged with air via an air compressor or another locomotive could pull up. The same way you would deal with dead batteries on an electric start locomotive. You need another loco for a jump start or a starter pack.
@ralfie88014 ай бұрын
@@nscaler711official Nope, that small tank is the air brake reservoir, or #2 main reservoir. The start air reservoir, sometimes called the #3 reservoir, is the big one towards the cab. Main reservoir #1 is inside the car body, under the radiators and just rear of the air compressor compartment.

@erkinalp8 жыл бұрын
electric starter would be too large and would only be suitable for locomotive use.
@SOU69008 жыл бұрын
Erkin Alp Güney You might want to rethink that. Plenty of locomotives, both EMD and GE, use electric start in some form or fashion. All emd units with a DC main generator use the generator it's to start up where as EMD units with an AC main generator use a pair of electric starters wired in series or parallel (depending on how they were ordered) to start. The SD70ACEe is the only model built that I know of that has air start.
@ohboy36225 жыл бұрын
Saves batteries, quicker start up.
@elliotcapson31013 жыл бұрын
@@SOU6900 actually all EMD from the last used main alt with the 567, the only unit that had alternator start with a 645 engine was the sw1500. All EMD past that used parallel, that eventually moving to series. The sd70ace was special, because none of them have regular starters. The ace has air starters, while the sd70ace-t4 has the main alternator as the starter.
