Emerson's music is quite challenging also for a classical pianist
@Aviationartist017 жыл бұрын
Very challenging. It also helps if you have something of an appreciation of Ginastera's works in unravelling Keith Emerson's construction of this work. The Spanish composer had a great influence on Keith's performing and writing. You can hear it in Massimo's performance. Brilliant playing! Keith would be really happy and delighted to see and hear this treatment of his music.

Marvelous! For some reason, the thought that comes to mind is back in the late 60s and early 70s there were reviews of ELP I think in Stereo Review magazine. The critics seemed to never acknowledge Keith Emerson and his brilliance. One adjective they never seemed to tire of was "pretentious". Emerson's work has stood the test of time and Tarkus has shown those critics to be ignorant and "pretentious".

I can understand what they mean... but there are very vfew pieces of music and more specifically prog pieces that are so expressive and full of emotion as Tarkus is. Keith's playing really was incredible. I'm more a Yes person, but Tarkus is seriously something incredible.

Yes (70s), King Crimson, and Gentle Giant are my favorites prog bands, not that I don't love the many others of that time period, that being said Emerson is my all time favorite keyboard/piano player of all time, so that says a lot.

@@Cobalt985- I used to listen to Keith and Rick. Rick did not stick. 🤷♂️ Really fun to watch these 'new' interpretation I've never known existed through the decades! Oh, Keith was DEFINITELY pretentious. But they sounded like they thought that was a 'Bad Thing.'
@johndale63563 жыл бұрын
I can't believe this! The mastery of not just the notes but the nuances of this man's playing is unbelievable! But his understanding of the acoustic piano and it's timbral qualities are unmatched! I can't believe it but he gets the piano to gather every bit of acoustics you would ever want to hear come from a piano. Very few people can do this! His separation of notes and registers to create an acoustic sound , that is solid whether he is running heavy atonal ostinato bass lines against lightly articulated Melody's in the right hand but his acoustics, are beyond belief! I'm thinking 12 microphones but I'm betting 3 maybe, this is not a man who would know how to Mic a piano to achieve those acoustic sounds. HE IS CREATING THE SOUND IN ONE OF THE FINEST PERFORMANCES I HAVE EVER HEARD! Heard is the key word here! Emerson's music is always visual when played, Keith crafted it as such. Keith's music is always laced with little side thoughts of musical ideas which seem to come from nowhere, but somehow fits together perfectly to the whole! This was a virtual transition to a piano piece period. Keith wrote it knowing the trio would tackle it, but I can't believe even Keith knew the harmonics so beautifully milked the piano for every possible string harmonic that sounded sympathetic vibrating overtones and had that piano fing humming! O. M. G. ! I am dumbfounded! Technique wise, and because of the brilliant Acoustic sounds this man is a better acoustic piano player then Keith. I know a little about playing the piano! Keith was never " Playing anything!" He was deadly serious! But this guy has an understanding of "Acoustics!" He made the piano literally Vibrate off the stage! He probably never could compose a piece like this. Nobody could! But his mastery of the acoustic piano was unbelievable TO HEAR! INCREDIBLE!
@johndale63563 жыл бұрын
Yeah a few people commented on my comments. So I said let me check! I was right! I've been playing piano 40 years. I play something and the piàno will reveal things when I listen to the recording that only the piano knows. It just happened. The sound board, the body, the resonance. But I do not have a clue how it happens. It's why the piano is such a wonderful instrument. This was like a professional race car driver, drafting, clutching , braking , giving it gas, letting up, laying into turns, this was whole different ball game. I'm kinda along for the ride! Nuance and Acoustics! Unreal!

When l was 14 some friends were into 'Zeppelin'' and 'Stones ...blah blah. But l found these 3 bands 'Genesis, Yes, ELP,' and from then on new friends found me!

Eng: Maestro Bucci, your arrangement brings honour to Emerson. To me, it's the best version I've ever heard. Actually, it's so charming that captures even NOT absolute fans of progressive rock like me. So I decided, though being not very skilled, to study Eruption. On YT I found the score, that I'm trying to enhance with your wonderful arrangement from your clip.

When I was 14 in 1970 I discovered the music of Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, their best albums were "Uncle Meat", "Weasels Ripped my Flesh", "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" and Zappa's solo album "Hot Rats" and they were released in only 2 years, 1969 & 1970. In 1971 I heard ELP's Tarkus and now I had two musical heroes, Zappa and Emerson. I learned guitar because keyboards back in those days were expensive and hard to move if you wanted to play in a band. I went to College to study music theory and would play the pianos in the practice rooms as much as I could. In 1973 Zappa published a book of musical scores of a lot of his greatest and well know pieces. I had for years wished I could get a score for Tarkus and in 1983 Keyboard Magazine delivered my wish, the score for "Eruption" from "Tarkus" was finally available. But learning it took a lot of practice. My piano playing and reading skills improved several months later and I discovered a lot of the reasons why I loved Emerson's and Zappa's music so much: the use of a lot of fourths, fifths, inversions of suspended fourth cords which is used extensively in Eruption. The opening ostinato is a series of arpeggio suspended 4th 2nd inversion cords. (3 notes with a fourth stacked over another fourth) Zappa uses this in a lot of his pieces, i.e. "Legend of the Golden Arches" from " Uncle Meat". Zappa and Emerson used what I believe is the 4th inversion of the suspended fourth cord which is stacked 5ths, e.g. C-G-D, which makes a sus. 4th cord sound more interesting. Also using staked 5ths on top of staked 5ths in another key will create a lot of harmonies that sound incredible. Emerson and Zappa were the greatest composers to come out of Rock in my opinion. From studying and learning my favorite pieces from these two Masters on piano I was able to find out why their music was so interesting. I know my explanations of their music may not all be technically correct. But I hope this helps other musicians who want to know why Zappa's and Emerson's music is so great. Thanks for reading.

Your work is not only extremely accurate and precise when compared to the original, it is also performed in a most beautiful sensitive way on a highly elaborated level of piano playing. All those keyboarders and pianists who grew up with full admiration for Keith Emerson‘s compositions, taking all in all a lot of motivation and inspiration out of the music by ELP, will be full of admiration for your fine skills, bringing this music fully alive at its best on the piano alone. We, who grew up with this music, we know those days it was "only" rock music. Critics weren't the classical crtitics, they worked for rock magazines, moreover, most of them even opposed classical music. It is a huge acknowledgement for our generation that ELP's music, and Keith in particular is compared to classical music. The fact of comparison would be enough, and this music actually stands it. More than that. Outstands. Thanks Massimo for keeping it alive. A grandiose performance.
