Rap/ hip-hop has always been controversial, usually for either subject matter or for vulgarity, something the FCC was created to monitor on media airwaves. Eminem wasn’t the first on that list, but his rise to stardom absolutely propelled him into that conversation because of the reasons I mentioned. The adults tried to suppress it, and that only made us love it so much more. The fact that I grew up near Detroit certainly meant he had more exposure locally, but he also had personal issues that made headlines, like his very bitter breakup with his wife Kim, which was present in several of his early albums.

He came from poverty and both his mom (Debbie) and his ex (Kim) came after him for money. He references his daughter (Hailey) a lot. He was silly and comedic but rarely smiled. Really interesting guy. I get most of the cultural refs bc I was in high school.:)

Early Em was (at times) alot of fun and tongue in cheek. It's why he was so refreshing, besides the genius talent. At this time he was probably the most controversial artist on the planet, parents (as usual) used him as a scapegoat for why their children were being rebellious, MTV banned some of his stuff but he was huge so it ended up damaging them through reduced viewership, hence the superhero-returning element to without me.

I love how real y’all are. I grew up being a little kid in the hood and my older friends and shit were like “this white dude only famous cause he white” and shit like that. And honestly, I don’t really remember his music being played a lot in Atlanta and it definitely wasn’t being played in the black community. But nowadays it’s hilarious to me, cause I remember being a little black kid, in the hood , and I was always into comic books and drawing and shit. And was kinda nerdy cause I wasn’t aspiring to sell crack and shit, cause my older cousin was super smart and made it out the hood and got a great job and I always felt alienated for not being “black enough” And my cousin got me Eminem’s first album on my 13th birthday and I thought it was so unique and interesting and since I was a comic book nerd, I almost felt like a rebel listening to this. Cause all the gAngsta rap and shit didn’t really appeal to me, my favorite cassette that I had back then was ATLIENS by outkast and this compilation my cousin had with Dungeon Fam and these really sick beats from some white kid named Dj NO and killer mike and Andre 3000 was on it. Anyways. Just building a little context cause growing up in south Atlanta. White rapper meant WHACK as fuck. And I was surrounded by hood culture and southern rap. But I liked the quirky stuff like outkast. And I loved that first Eminem album. But got so much shit from everyone for listening to it that I ignored Eminem from that point. But now it seems like it don’t matter race or culture people seem to love this dude. And honestly. Adult me doesn’t really vibe to it. But obviously he did something that must have really clicked with white people especially. Cause I constantly see his name on top 5 lists. And I disagree heavily but his unique sound and just over all ability to be funny and entertaining and “convtroversial” is off the charts.

I used to work at this club in Tennessee as a Bar Back where I was humping glasses to the kitchen to get washed, getting ICE for 3 stations on the main floor and one the VIP room upstairs, along with restocking all the beer for all those locations as well, Bringing out kegs every hour on to of the bottled beer. I was good friends with the DJ so I had a deal with him where he would play this song once every hour to keep me going. Was a rough job. By the end of the night the main floor was so covered with beer it took almost 2 hours every night just to get it mopped up. When we finally got done cleaning and restocking after everyone had left all the employees would go upstairs and just get hammered before going home for the night. I remember one night imparticular because it was right around the same time of the Tyson Vs. McNeely fight where I had kind of strained my back pretty hard the night before, I confided to a CoWorker that I was in a ton of pain. She said here take this. was a little orange pill, Started to feel a little better went on with my normal routine. Then I started feeling a bit whacked. So at the end of the night I started doing some shots and I woke up in the ditch in front of my cousins' house. Turns out she had given me Extacy and well I mixed it without knowing what it was with a lot of Whiskey. This is what this song makes me think of.
