As a divorced man tentatively trying online dating, I find the whole "why won't you message me all day?" game strange. Like...I have a life outside of this app..? Ya know..two children. Job. Hobbies. That sort of thing. The whole mentality of, oh you won't set aside your entire life to chat with me (a complete stranger) on a min by min basis, then you're "not interested" or "a bad guy" yeah, that's a red flag. That's an unhealthy relationship waiting to happen.

Totally agree. I've been in a steady relationship for 2 years now but before that I was in the dating app game on and off for a few years. Holy shit. The amount of people who absolutely DEMAND your attention all day just because you chatted for a few hours the day before are astounding. And not only that but demand that you dive deep into their emotional life and thoughts even after chatting for a few days. Exhausting. The amount of red flags I didn't even know existed I've learned from dating apps.

I think my favourite response to an explicit pic that I've ever heard of was to ask if they just sent you a photo of a minor and follow up by saying you'll be reporting it to the police. I met my wife online 27 years ago... this was before the internet; it was on a "BBS", or "Bulletin Board Service"- imagine if the internet was a single computer you called up on a telephone line. There were a number of forums, and I kept seeing this same handle on scifi, cooking, etc. We exchanged so many posts I was in love before ever meeting her in the flesh. (no pics then, the computers weren't up to it) I think that's the secret of our success- we spent the first year talking intellect to intellect, no pics, no facial expressions to respond to, just who we were.

I also met my wife on a BBS, I guess about 28 years ago now. We met online when I was babysitting for my sister, who ran a BBS, and was chatting with her users after the kids went to bed. I chatted with her for most of the night. Eventually set up my own BBS so that we could chat any time, not just when I was helping my sister out. We went several months before we met. By then, she was engaged, so we just became friends, mostly chatting online but occasionally doing things with groups of people. We quickly became best friends, and her fiance's only friend was too ill to stand up for him at their wedding, so, I wound up being the best man at her first wedding. We remained friends, again, mostly chatting online, until well after that was over, and she approached me romantically... We separated earlier this year, but, still best friends. I wish BBSing were still a thing (I know, there are still some out there, but it's nowhere near the same as it was, when most had a local user base which weren't almost entirely comprised of other sysops) and we could still chat the way we used to. The tools today are much better, and we text and PM all the time, but there was something entirely different to it back then.... Anyhow, thanks for the bout of nostalgia... Tip: ASCII roses... No matter how advanced our messaging gets, never stop sending ASCII roses if you met your SO via a BBS ;)

These day's it's just windowshopping. The dating apps are not helpful at all. As a man, you are outnumbering the women by so many, it's very hard to get their attention at all thanks to jackasses that you see in this video. Normal guy's have to be super creative to get their messages come trough and even then if you say one wrong thing, you are out. They got so much choice, they just swipe to the next and you as man are going for another application letter. Heck, job applications guarantee more success then dating sites these days.
@gregreich7238
@gregreich7238 Жыл бұрын
I honestly believe dating apps are the worst way to meet people. Nearly everyone is putting on a front. If you want to see how people you meet online genuinely are, watch them in social media groups. Watch them comment on things outside of relationships/dating. You're more likely to see their genuine worldview that way. Emma, I would say I can't imagine what it's like being a woman on the Internet, but a friend of mine who is a lesbian made a claim that men can't pose as women on the Internet without lesbians finding out, then challenged me to try. So I made a profile of a 19 year old woman (I was 24 at the time) and spent a bunch of time in lesbian rooms on AOL (that's how far back this goes). While I was not found out, I spent a lot of time finding out how men are with women online Holy shit, the number of unsolicited penis pics! ugh! But I got all of the unsolicited messages, too. "You just haven't found the right d*ck yet." My profile said I was a lesbian. "I bet I can turn you." And a whole bunch of even uglier messages. The whole exercise gave me a lot of empathy for women in general.

As a (formerly) attractive, asexual male, I feel like I can relate to at least some of this. Though I came up back in the day when nobody had a cell phone and most folks didn't even have a computer, so all my experiences were extra creepy due to the fact they were all in-person. I was genuinely surprised (at first) at how often people lost their shit when I would tell them I'm not interested. Especially so when it comes to how aggressive and rude some girls would get. If I was approached by just one then it wouldn't usually be a problem but I always knew I was in for a bad time when I would see three or more approaching. No matter how politely I'd turn them down, things would go from zero to blatant homophobia in under five seconds. Because, obviously, they understand my sexuality more than I do and I guess being gay is bad, apparently, so I should have sex with this roaming pack of random psychopaths so I can be not that. It was all very convincing.

I recently talked to a girl on a dating app for 2 weeks, we matched and talked and we got along, as far as I could tell. I was being polite and respecting her, as I do with anyone I match with. We shared a lot of hobbies and interests. After about 2 weeks I asked if she wanted to meet or something to get to know each other better, she declined and I simply asked "why's that?", she responded by telling me she didn't want to get to know me or have any form of relationship with me. So my response was a simple "I'm just curious, why not?" as I feel that after 2 weeks I deserve at least that. She didn't reply after a few hours, she usually replies instantly, so I simply said "Thank you for wasting my time." and unmatched her. Maybe that final message wasn't appropriate but it's what a lot of guys have to deal with constantly. I've had countless girls match with me and then never reply or give me backache from carrying the conversation. I ask "why?" as I would like to know what she sees as a flaw about me and I can improve on that flaw, if possible. Like, for example, I'm in the process of losing weight as I used to be overweight and I knew that fat me isn't exactly the most good looking guy. Some guys will ask "why?" in a manipulative way but there are guys like me out there who literally just want to improve.

The average Girl online gets showered with male attention simply for existing. Guys are lining up for them, they dont have to put much effort into it. That leads to girls overvalue themselves, inflates their egos and they try to shoot for guys way out of their league instead of going for the Kind average guy you described. The average Guy on the other hand gets almost no female attention and eventually looses all of his confidence in himself. He has to face Girls who are impatient, change their mind on the dime or just ghost him without much reason since they have so much more options to pick from. Many just give up on trying at all or become Trolls because of that. And that is what you see in this video. The ladies get rejected too - by the guys way out of their league and they become bitchy in return. So online Dating is damaging for everyone really. Its great if you are an average or below average girl and you just want a confidence boost without engaging in conversations much. Or if you are a Fuckboy who is just looking for sex. then online dating is for you.

I've got plenty of rude men approaching, too. Luckily, I'm lesbian, so I could just ignore tone of messages from guys. But the worst encounter on an online dating app for me was with a woman. Really toxic, telling me I'm an insult to women, to lesbians, and that I cannot be a lesbian because I'm a man. (I'm a trans woman.) She told me that she'd screenshot my profile and that she'd publish them if I don't delete my profile. A feeble attempt at blackmail (didn't care if she publish my photos), plus a direct admission, also of breaking the site's rules of no screenshots and circumventing the disabling of screenshots. Before her full outburst I responded to her, if I'm not here type, why did she match me. But afterwards I just reported her. Her profile soon disappeared...

Guys (advice that I have to tell myself): If she rejects you, and you're wondering why she rejected you, it's either something you did or *she doesn't know you at all*! If you can't think of what you did to be rejected, maybe you did nothing wrong at all, she just doesn't see you that way because she probably hardly knows you. Also, the guy who kept calling you a reprobate certainly was displaying much less patience than you displayed for him. Weird and depressing. Aesop’s The Fox and the Grapes comes to mind for most of these. Also not everyone can reply in such a short time. There’s something wrong with someone who thinks you are just waiting for a message and have no commitments to anything else (work/family/basic needs). I also wish more people took on the concept of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. It does not matter if a individual does not appreciate how something looks, sounds or feels, someone else will. I have taken this with all forms of art, music, literature, food. Just because I don’t like it, it doesn’t mean it has no worth or value. Someone else will adore it. I’m with you on the we can be friends, you know they want more, and even if you could have been friends you certainly can’t after finding that out. Beauty being skin deep is also a thought that comes to mind, and mind that is all that matters when looking to connect with someone. That is all that will last given time. If you can’t connect with someone on that level then there is no point on dating. The libertarian may find the tyrant aesthetically appealing but still they are tyrannical and oppose all the libertarian holds dear. Not fruitful relationship could exist, why even seek it.

Those rude punks act all tough to girls, but let me tyell you, tyhey can backpedal real quick when a 40-something year old Dutch guy starts to treat them the same way as they treat a girl online. Suddenly they aren't so big when it's their little butts that might be taking a willy (no, I'm not gay, not bi either, but I'll treat a punk like a punk). Wow, this one hit weird. First of all, love the channel Emma, you probably get a lot of flak making this type of video but I want you to know that myself and plenty of other people really enjoy what you make. Many years ago, I was addicted to dating apps and used them compulsively for years. I was going through a big self-confidence crisis. Even though I was in a committed relationship with a great partner, I aggressively turned to these websites/apps for validation. I was one of the guys on there who put a lot of effort into his profile and would send hundreds of detailed first messages, hungry for the serotonin hit that came with even the slightest reply. I was only feeding my self-loathing as I easily sent thousands of messages both high and low effort (I don't think I was ever intentionally mean or vulgar but it'd be impossible to remember everything) and got a truly dismal reply rate. Of course, this made me feel terrible because in my head it felt like nobody was even remotely interested in me, and I truly believe this death spiral leads many young men into inceldom. It's hard to truly grasp the scope of numbers once they get much bigger than a few dozen, so the mind numbing number of messages even a well-intentioned (but fucked emotionally) straight guy needs to send on these apps in order to get a meaningful number of replies should be enough to dissuade people from using them. Even though most men understand that (cis) women on these apps/sites (especially traditionally attractive ones) receive way too many messages to actually reply to most of them, your lizard brain hungers for vindication and the confirmation that the hours spent messaging/swiping/whatever were worth it and the validation that those replies provide. From there it is easy to slip into the trap of thinking that since these women are receiving sooo many of the messages you crave so badly, they must just be stuck up and basking in the shower of validation and attention that you need so badly. This is why so many men on these places become angry, mean, and bitter. They're designed to addict people, they hit the exact same reward pathways as gambling. One more message/swipe/spin of the roulette wheel... Emma is absolutely right when she says that sites/apps that require mutual approval are much better, but they still are emotional black holes for people who are vulnerable to them. If someone reading this feels this comment resonating with them then I'm talking to you. If it's not fun anymore, stop. If it makes you feel bad, stop. You are not "dating" anymore, you're just feeding your own self loathing. Dating should be fun and enjoyable. Besides, if you're having a miserable time people will be able to sense that and they will not be interested. You have value outside the app, they make money by convincing you otherwise. They rewire your brain to convince you that you need them. This is an addiction no less serious than gambling or drug abuse My then girlfriend caught me using them and I swore off them. A few months later I fell off the wagon and started up again. She suspected something and made a fake profile, then caught me red handed. We had a massive fight and nearly broke up (we had been dating for years). She agreed I could stay as long as it never reoccurred and I saw a therapist about the underlying issues (we could both tell I was fucked in the head). My therapist helped me a lot with realizing the traps I had made for myself and the death spiral I was going on. If my partner hadn't called me out and had me get help I probably would've fallen into very very toxic behaviors and I'm forever grateful for her. It took forever to be able to rebuild her trust and I work every day to try and make sure I'm a better person. We are about to have our two year anniversary and although it hasn't been perfect I love our relationship and I love my wife. I haven't touched a dating app or website in 5 years and even though I feel their pull, I'm glad I was able to escape their truly evil cycle. Let this be the wakeup call for anyone who needs it. There are people out there who value you and who like you for you. The best way to get a girlfriend/boyfriend is to get comfortable making friends. Join a hobby group, talk to people. Stop being terminally online. Delete social media. If you have even a small circle of friends the chance someone introduces you to someone who you want and who wants you goes up exponentially. If you're terminally online, bitter, and miserable, you'll just repel the people who might have otherwise been interested.

If some random bloke assumes that you're Scandinavian and asks for your number, son't panic...Give him the phone number of the Norwegian Embassy, or the local IKEA outlet.

The story you shared about the guy approaching you on the street, asking for your number, then asking why you wouldn't give it to him... I think another offense he made was asking for your number to begin with. Its garbage behavior to put someone on the spot like that. Their choice, if they aren't interested, is either A.) Reject you on the spot, which can be terrifying because men aren't well known for taking rejection well. B.) Give their number to someone that they don't actually want to have their number, and have to deal with the fallout from that later. Or C.) Give out a fake number. I think the proper thing to do, if you're going to pursue a stranger at all, is to offer your own number. Doesn't put the onus on them to reject you on the spot, they can just accept your number and never make use of it if they don't want to.

I just stumbled across this video - and I feel something that we here in Germany describe as "Fremdschämen". This is the situation when you feel ashamed by things you yourself hadn't done, but someone else. I really feel ashamed by the reaction of these (surely testosterone driven) men.

This content makes me very sad. When I first saw one of your streams I thought "OMG she is absolutely beautiful and smart!!!!! (I knew I was too old for you don't worry, and I am one of the bigger creeps when it comes to online dating especially. I do better in person). You should just keep doing what you are doing and you will know when the right guy comes along :)

I can understand some of those guys. As someone who tries dating apps from time to time, i can say with a 100% confidence that it doesn't matter if you say something funny, nice, interesting, about her profile or if you just say hi, most women just do not reply at all. Whether it's bots, or not, it can be frustrating for some. And i only used apps that actually used matching , so you know the woman gave you a "like". Not so sure about apps that don't use such systems. I can also understand why its frustrating for women to have so many messages that they're not able to reply to everything.

I've had the same experience, i don't really understand swiping someone and not actually talking to them, I get it if it's an open system where anyone can message you, that sounds like hell, but i've never used one of those. They just don't really speak.

of course. I love when they say that men have a fragile ego for reacting negatively to not responding, when women don't even engage at all with fear of being rejected. How can someone that doesn't even has to start a conversation with a stranger calls others fragile for not liking when they engage and are shuned down without a reason lol.

If it makes you feel any better Emma, it's not just straight guys. I briefly had a profile on one of these apps and since I'm pan, I was getting messages mostly from guys. Gay/bi/pan guys can be just as cringe as straight guys.

I put chess, sudoku, and science as some of my recreational profile interests... My favorite responses (which happened quite frequently) was when someone said: "they're a sapiophile" which absolutely exists, but.... you know it's a targeting, sociopath, red flag when they type something along the lines of: "Imma sapeofile and I hope your one to. We have all the same interest." No... no we don't.

I love the "women" with obviously fake profiles who message me on Instagram and always inevitably ask me for money...like, I'm a comic writer, I don't have money! Although the best one recently was the one who asked me a few questions and then asked me if I had a girlfriend, and when I replied with "yes" just simply replied, "okay" and never messaged me again.
