Emmy 😂 I'm Portuguese (living in Germany now, as I fell in love with a German lady and being far away would be torture, so I moved!) Malasadas made me think "mal assadas?" Mal means evil/badly, and assada/assado means roasted; but together it goes more in the direction of "baked/cooked not overly too much" And after you tasted it, I got it... "bolas de berlim"! That's what we call it in the village I'm from, and in the nearby cities in Portugal And it is an important thing, to the point that when the weather is warm, men dress accordingly but in a clean way, put a cap, and walk all day long throughout the beach yelling "loooooook it's the freeeeesh-y wateeeeeer.... and the bola de berliiiiim...... and the ice cream from olá!!! (icecream brand, olá meaning hello)" whilst carrying all those, with the baked bolas (balls) being fresh from the day, restocking whenever he runs out, and whenever someone raises an arm him going to the person, greeting, and providing the food and water This all day long, walking up and down the beach, seeing the satisfaction of the families who worked hard all year and can finally rest and enjoy each other in the free time! And indeed, being covered in sugar, specially hands and corners of mouth, *is a must* 😆 You for sure did it the Portuguese way, and possibly the Hawaiian way too ˢᵘᵍᵃʳ ᵉᵛᵉʳʸʷʰᵉʳᵉ Happy to see you loved it! There's nothing the Portuguese people back then loved more than sharing the love for food and new found ingredients, dishes and cooking techniques throughout any land we went to, as a way of showing our love and respect, both for the land, the people, and food - and letting food connect us!

Hey Emmy! I'm Portuguese and I've eaten a few Malassadas in my life. There are 2 kinds of Malassadas: a recipe from Madeira and another from Azores (both Portuguese Archipelagos). I can only speak about the Azorean ones. Here we stretch the dough before frying so you get almost a pancake shape (with crispy bits in the middle) and is rare to find a stuffed Malassada. It's a tradicional treat during Carnival and most bakeries only sell them during 2-3 weeks until the party :)

Hope you're enjoying Hawaii! Watch out for the errant peacocks, thieving weasels and packs of intermingling chickens and cats!
