Empire SYX Review

The SYX has a funky name because Empire has made 5 previous of guns that have used the same platform. It started off with the original Mini back in 2006, then came the Empire Axe, Mini GS, Axe Pro and the Axe 2.0.

Empire has changed some big things like the bolt and regulator and some smaller things like the grips, bolt release and board navigation.
How does this thing shoot? Like an Axe, if you have ever shot an Axe you are pretty much going to know how the SYX shoots, it is not that much different. I couldn't tell much of a difference if any, that's not really the point though, Empire wasn’t trying to make the SYX shoot that much different. The Axe was already quite and smooth, and they have a bolt system that is very reliable, so why change something if it works very well and is reliable? It would be like Eclipse says hey the GammaCore (what PE calls there bolt system) in the Gtek works great let’s change it. That would just be a bad idea.

Great review as always, love the link to the efficiency test and respect that you didn’t choose to make this a longer video and adding an efficiency test. It would be cool though, to see some sort of qualitative data on reviews, like regulator consistency for example (averaging chrono FPS). Especially seeing as how markers are moving away from external regs and the option to upgrade to a CP reg, etc. Keep up the good work!

I like what they did with the main grips on these. Personally I prefer a larger grip like those found on a 45 frame but I still found the syx's thin grip to be appealing.

Really in-depth review. Nice! I know with my Axe, I put rubber bands around mine on the foregrip. The only thing I didn't like about the Axe, mine just never worked in the cold where many say it's fine and should work. Or I'm just up here in New York and we just get colder than most people. Went from many forums to try and fix it, nothing worked.

You need to get a delrin boss bolt. The problem is the stock bolt and the stock bolt guide seem to be two different types of aluminum alloy.........when things get cold one can shrink at a different rate than the other causing some stiction........for lack of a better word. I've seen this happen as well........especially cold wet days. The guns running boss bolts never had the issue as the delrin isn't as effected by the cold and they tend to run a slightly looser fit.

Agreed, rather than go for high contrast lighting the diffused lighting here looks much more cinematic. No need for shadow detail on a talking head video Brad - you’re doing great! Then again, now that it is winter I see you wearing a flannel shirt so maybe you were like me and are just trying to keep warm LOL. If you're the somewhat niche demographic that's not willing to spend the time and money to go pro, but considers themselves a "rec" pro who's out on the fields doing any type of gameplay each weekend, this is the marker for you. The amount of people I've heard knocking this marker because of the grip appearance alone is mind boggling.....I can't think of many things more sophomoric and petty than that. Also, fun fact, the Shocker (what many people say is the superior version to this gun) is *more* expensive....so that can't be a point of contention either. The Shocker XLS is $50-$100 dollars more depending on skin color. I've always been an Axe/Mini/Empire fan because, for whatever reason the paintball market loves hating on mid range to upper mid range guns for no apparent reason. They want you to either be stuck forever on the low end and only play woodsball in the backyard with your friends, or go pro and shell out for a CSR. The mid range has been hated cause they cut down the profit margins of the tournament sponsors or mass retailers. Well worth the investment. Will be acquiring once my Axe 2.0 kicks the bucket.

I really like the look of this. I am a current 160r owner, but I find that I sometimes prefer the feel of the poppet valve on my friends Axe. I doubt I will replace my 160r, but I do think if it were $100 cheaper it would be a steal.

I got a brand new syx for $450, totally worth it.I don't know if I would have bought it for more than $500. I think if they can get the price point around $500 $550 tops they would sell. to many guns in the $700-$900 that will be alot smoother.

Hey 👋🏽 I gotta a question. So I’ve played a few matches of paintball and I really enjoy the game. My only problem is I keep getting massive bruises when I play (I take two blood thinners). A few things. For knee pads, elbow pads and slider shorts I like the GI Sportz Race 2.0, and for torso/chest protection the Planet Eclipse Overload Jersey. For paintball specific stuff those are what I think are the best pads. I'm sure there is some other layering would help tons especially easy when in the winter.

I knew a an old pro that had carpet material sewn underneath his paintball pants. He claimed balls broke less on them and when they did break it was hardly noticeable. Downside was it took some effort to make and weight and the heat

There's just so many used options out there. Geo 3, LV1, G6R, Gteks or this SYX are guns I would choose over the GTI.

It's because the paintball community loves to crap on anything they decide they don't like. the Vanquish shoots better than the DLX Luxe ice (haven't tested against the uber hyped up ion derivative calling itself the new Luxe yet) but the community arbitrarily chose to crap on it. They do this all the time... Remember the Tippmann Crossover XVR? It was a decent all-round paintball marker which had a LOT of promise as a platform.. but too many people railed against it and now it's dead. I love paintball and have been in it for over 20+ years but the online community sometimes is really dumb.

That's not bad, but for the same price you could get a better gtek 160r. Or, for 250-300ish you can get an axe 2.0 or etha 2 used and are both excellent values.

The Vanquish doesn't have one... But basically this is the 6th version of the Axe/Mini platform, they all look alike despite minor differences. The technical reason for the spring is that the pneumatics are simpler because it uses the spring to return the bolt to starting position.

The gtek is now only 400 dollars, that’s literally the best deal in paintball right now. I’ve been practicing with some of the TMG crew and a lot of them aren’t fans either. I still have a 1st gen invert mini and it shoots great for my girl.
