in terms of ecological disasters by invasive or even just marginally obnoxious species, Australia probably has to take the cake... you have the various locust plagues over the past century or so, the mouse plagues, cane toad/bull frog problem in the north east, and then the emu war. there are probably more that I cant remember and even more that I havent even heard of.
@Karen-pk3uv4 жыл бұрын
I don't know the details but wasn't there something about the British importing rabbits or foxes because they liked hunting them and the populations got out of control so they tried bringing in a natural predator but then that predator population got out of control. Plus I remember a documentary about the feral cat populations being so bad they are now being hunted.
@Ishlacorrin4 жыл бұрын
Rabbit plague so bad we started bio-warfare with the Myxomatosis disease that was used.
@Picolinni4 жыл бұрын
Karen you are partly correct. Foxes were brought for sport and rabbits for fox food. Both destroyed their native counterparts, with a few exceptions of the dingos in central areas which are neither truely native nor widespread, as well as destroying native flora that were already struggling due to introduced species. Have gotten to see Myxomatosis first hand, I am strongly opposed to any biological controls. It is one of the most cruel, prolonged and agonising deaths I have had the misfortune of witnessing. 1080 fox bait is another that is truely inhuman yet accepted.
@danielwilson86044 жыл бұрын
The can toad problem is not limited to any particular area. It's so bad the rspca (it's like Peta if they weren't crazy) reccomenda we kill them humanely, instead of letting them live as some might think. There's also blackberries. They choke rivers and kill local wildlife (and sheep). We are still looking into more ways to solve the rabbit problem.

The Cane Toad problem wasn't natural though. It was manmade because humans put Cane Toads in Australia where they didn't belong.

you gotta know your enemy. in the case of emus, fences are the answer. my natural enemies are some invasive lizards that are currently being a plague here. they reproduce ridiculously fast, mature even faster, and eat every sort of crop.......and since they have no natural predator their population is constantly exploding. but they do have a weakness....they hate the smell of oregano..... so i've made something i call the great wall of oregano to protect my crops., instead of planting the oregano directly into the ground i hate it in pots, so i can move it around as needed......oregano is easy to spread you cut a branch and give it good soil and water and it develops into a new plant. now that i have enough i've started planting it directly into the ground at strategic locations.......so hopefully i can eventually push the invaders out of my land.

Nobody talks about how our man Willem Janszoon landed in Australia on the 26th of February 1606. Only problem was all they found was swampy land, and the people there hostile. The ship lost ten of its crew during various expeditions ashore. Janszoon named the place "Nieu Zeland" (New Zeland). Janszoon, however, didn't realise he had discovered Australia. To be fair, 10 machinegun rounds per target killed isn't even bad. Considering inaccuracy, an excess of shots you might throw down range at one target, and the super tanky Emus, 10,000 rounds for 1,000 deaths is actually pretty solid. The US spent something like 50,000 rounds per enemy killed in vietnam (note that confusing conditions/jungle cover, covering fire, strafing foliage, and so forth drive this figure up), and WW1 consumed hundreds of millions to billions of rounds of ammunition during its duration. There are preppers today with 50,000+ rounds in their homes stocked up. 10,000, while big in number for most all things in life, isn't really that big in the realm of ammunition fired.

that was an interesting thing you said in regards to the food production demand due to the first ww1. Haven't heard that anywhere before. Like how the American depression spiraling to a world-wide great depression bringing the fear and anger towards the people in Germany which then could be abused and focused into one (wrong) direction which in turn gave Hitler enough support for his plans.
