Same! I found the trade route mechanic difficult to figure out and had to search the web for info. It sucks that there is no in-game resource for information, only a link to an outdated web resource.

I've never had much luck with trade routes in Endless Legend. The AI is just way too cold and aggressive to make friends with and by the time you have bordering regions and the ability to build roads you've been murdering each other for half the game and there's just no opportunity to make friends. I've rarely ever seen even AI factions move from cold war to peace with one another. This is a lot different from Endless Space and even ES2, where the AI seems eager for peace. Trade is of course a lot easier in ES1 where its just kind of automatically established and can move through neutral or empty territory.

certain factions are aggressive, most of them, but the drakken, roving clans, and occasionaly broken lords offer peace and trade with me from time to time

I think the roads are built automatically between your cities and other cities and your computer chooses the most benefical routes

They can be really useful if all your territories surround the same ocean. Also, conquering an ocean is usually pretty easy, so even if you're blocked at first, you can always take the ocean for yourself in the next few turns.
