Although I don’t have any pines(yet) this is a very interesting video on how to decandle/reduce candles and balance vigor. Thanks Jelle

Spot on and I hadn't picked up on the risk of the lower candle having no needles - good thing I watched. I am doing all my candle work next week so now I am all prepared :)

I just got into pines (got 2 varieties of mugo pines) and I basically did exactly what you did. Turns out you learn a lot from this community... I made a little booboo though. Today I learned you have to spot the needles at the base of the candle. Thanks, I wasn't aware.

A good day today. Learned something new then!

As kamuras book said take them all off at once weak and strong to stop the sap flow to the tips so it promotes backbuding on bare inside branches Bonsai society has a good video showing this

Thanks for the tips! At what age of the tree do you start cutting the candles? I have a three year old Japanese Black Pine.

Hello! Thank you for the video and telling more about decandling. I have already watched hours of videos and unfortunately no one gives a good and clear explanation of the difference between the bud and the candle. What is the principal difference? Do I treat them in the same way? If I have a new bud, do i cut the rest back up to the bud to stimulate its development? That would be super helpful if you could reveal the difference:)

A bud starts growing and elongating and turns into a candle. When is a pile of rocks a mountain? ;)

When should you start clipping the candles for a seedling? I have a jbp that is finishing its first true flush. Its only really growing out the top but has needles and small buds further down. I want those buds to put out growth (mainly for a sacrifice branch).
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I would rethink. How about you see the trunk as a sacrifice, and the small sprouts down low at your future tree. This is how I do it. I let the main trunk grow, and I remove needles and lower branches from it, leving just 2 or 3 of the small lowest branches. After a few years, this is where I prune back to.

If I have similarly young pine seedling, should I already start the balancing dance of the candles or let it grow out to be 7/8 years old and only then start working on them as the tree is stronger?
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
It depends on your aim with the tree! To get thicker trunks, you need to push growth.

I have a JWP that is flowering on every single candle. Looks amazing, but I am not sure how to do with it. Would you still candle pinch flowering candles and how?
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
I would not decandle a japanese white pine. In my climate these are way to weak to decandle.I might prune lightly. Remove the flowers is helpfull. But I am going to have to admit.. I own 1 JWP, and since 3 weeks. So no experience, besides what was shown to me in my bonsai classes.

@@GrowingBonsai Thanks Jelle. I was not talking about decandeling. I dont dare to do that. I was thinking about shortening the candles. I will show the tree on wednesday video. Hope to get someone to coment on it. Anyway, the video will feature another tree that have awaken your feelings before. You may want to see that.🙂👍

More great information!! I'm just disappointed in one thing.... You did not pull out the dandelion seeds and blow on them. Two perfect ones right there, yet no one blew all the seed off them... Sigh...😉😄
