Often mistaken for a Webley, the much maligned Enfield No.2 revolver was one of the last newly-designed revolvers adopted by a major power. But were they as bad as their reputation suggests? Certainly, many of them on the market are wobbly and have problems, but is one in good condition actually a solid service revolver?

The Enfield No. 2 MK I* .380-200 Revolver, properly cared for, can and does serve some gun savy owners as a home defense arm. I know, I'm a fortunate one to own a Enfield and it resides in my bedside end-table. I have owned it for many years and have enjoyed shooting it at the range. I purchased another Enfield at a local gun show a few years ago that was in very good condition. Matter of fact, it looked unused! This was when I became interested in the .38 S&W cartridge itself. The 145-gr. lead bullet had been popular with US law enforcement in the 1920's and 30's, but slowly conceded to the more powerful .38 Special cartridge. The American .38 S&W used a 145 grain lead bullet and loading specs that sent this round (at muzzle) down range at about 685 feet per second and impacting on target with some 150-foot pounds of energy. This round is still manufactured here in 2020. Under 15-feet away from target this round (IF PLACED PROPERLY) will do fine for most bad miscreants in your home at o-dark-thirty hours. In the middle 1970's I was new to law enforcement and at 24-years of age then my knowledge of firearms was slim. One day I received a call to meet a out-of-town deputy, turned out to be the Sheriff himself of a very sparse and rural county. As I pulled up next to him, I noticed an adult male sitting in the back seat of the Sheriffs rough looking cruiser. The Sheriff had caught a bad guy with warrants from our county for a variety of crimes. He had brought him to us for his transport to the County Jail. After patting down suspect for weapons and exchanging handcuffs we shot the breeze a few minutes. This fella was old enough to be my grandfather, and had a wealth of common sense. He was in his 4th term as Sheriff and was thinking of retirement. I found out later the people from his county pleaded with him to run that 4th time. He was well thought of by good and bad, well respected and honest to a fault! Even the bad guys liked him! Well, while standing there talking to this icon of cop world, I noticed that he was packing an odd looking service revolver as a duty gun. Turns out that the elderly sheriff was carrying the Enfield MK I* Revolver in a black leather holster that he had made just for his Enfield. It was a high rise, very close to his body, and super difficult to be snatched by a bad guy resisting arrest. He allowed me to examine it, as this was my first experience with an Enfield. He showed me the break-top action of his gun and the round he used for duty carry. He carefully explained to a youngster a short history lesson of this British-made six-shooter .His round for duty carry was a special handload of his own making. He reloaded his ammo from revolver to rifle cartridges. Well versed in reloading and absolutely confident in his Enfield, with his own hand-loads. Keep in mind this is a certified cop in uniform and packing an Enfield for his protection and I remember him being at ease and confident of his gun to perform! His .38 hand load was actually the exact round the Enfield was made for, the .38/200 round! I remember him telling me the big lead 200-grain bullet he used would tumble before striking it's intended target. He loaded his d!uty load to the old British specs for this round and field tested it as good as he could and began packing his Enfield with his own hand-loads and 12-spare rounds if ever needed. I was fascinated by this learned lawman and firearms guru. We parted company and later he retired after his 4th term was over with many wishing he would run again. I found out from his obituary that in the middle 1970's when I met him, he was about 76-years old. I have been wanting to share this lawman with Enfield story for years. He was a good man, he thoroughly believed in our Savior, and he carried a favorite arm of mine, the Enfield MK I* Revolver. I'm sorry for the length but felt this man deserved better than my written words here! David

The Enfield No. 2 MK I* is one of my all time favorites in British break-tops. A reliable, dependable, sturdy, and accurate (combat ranges) revolver that served our allies in WW 2 and the Korean War. I have the "honor" of owning several Enfields and use one as a nightstand and travel companion for life insurance. My nightstand Enfield is a 1942-production and is loaded with six hand-loaded 200-grain LRN .38/200rounds. Loaded to pre-war specs and a excellent self defense round. The two combined make an excellent answer to that "bump-in-the-night" that may come! Appreciate the video despite the harsh criticism of a "classic" that protected many Brit soldiers in the mentioned wars. Not to overlook the thousands of Enfields that served Brit interests across the globe.David

I've got a 1939 No.2 Mk.1*, and I have to say, after getting ahold of some 200 grain rounds for it, I'll never shoot anything less out of it. It shoots better, and far more accurately than with the 178 grain .38S&W rounds.

yao ziyuan section 7-1 firearms are typically pinned at 2 rounds. of course the police haven't figured out that magazines aren't actually regulated under British law so there's nothing stopping one from going out and buying an unpinned mag.

My dad had an old tanker version, probably left over from the the second war, he used to keep reminding me of the fact it had no safety like the pistols, double action press and fire. Even had a ton of those all lead rounds, they might not have had that stopping power of a 45, but all those shards of lead in your belly, that would stop you after a while.

I can remember in 1987-88 when I was a UK Policeman on my own at a rural station there was a firearms amnesty and an old WW2 Veteran came into the nick & handed in his old fully working Enfield No2 double action only revolver for destruction, I wanted to give him a receipt but he couldn't be bothered waiting & off he went, I toyed momentarily with keeping it but common sense prevailed & I booked it in to the property system. I'm glad I did because the next day when I was off duty he came back & handed an old army sock full of rounds (not the FMJ's but the early ones) to my Sergeant & said "Thats to go with the pistol I handed in yesterday" My Sgt checked the store & put the rounds with it. Nowadays there would have to be a firearms (ARV) cop to check it safe & fill in hundreds of forms and tag it etc etc etc. How times have changed folks & a good lesson in keeping your job too cos you never know.

Good video. I did not know that these were produced postwar. I figured the Brits just kept on with war leftovers til 1957 when the BHP was adopted. I always thought the British cartridges were awfully short, but smokeless does not need a very long cartridge (plus they are rather low velocity). I imagine the short length is also an advantage for ejection, so the designers were being crafty.

In the series "Murdock Mysteries", we can a see an Enfield No.2 MK1** (with a spurless hammer) in the opening credits, which is a mistake because the scene is supposed to take place around 1900, 30 years or so before the gun was actually manufactured. The gun is so distinctive with its spurless hammer that it is very surprising they could make such a mistake.

Very nice gun, Mike B. As someone who favors revolvers and .38 Spl and likes prewar Colt revolvers, you have a nice gun. That Colt “bank vault” lockup when you pull the trigger is tight. Thank you for demonstrating by shooting the gun as it was intended: one hand and double action. Shot placement is ultimately what counts but I would think if you could find a soft lead bullet of equal diameter with a hollow point and maybe a little extra +P loading (if that’s possible in .38 S&W and in a gun of that design), you could have a pretty decent defense revolver. You Englishmen made some nice revolvers.

I happen to like both my Webley and Enfield revolvers I got. My Enfield is in .455 Webley and my Webley in the .38 S&W. Based on some tests I've done, I think their whole claim about "It's just as much of a man stopper as .455 Webley" comes from two things I've observed... Well one some other people did. But firstly, in my tests on penetration and expansion, the .455 Webley at maximum could easily have a larger diameter, however without the use of expanding ammunition there wasnt much of a terminal difference and both rounds penetrated about the same distance as one another. The only area I found the .455 to do better was through extremely light cover it would punch through and penetrate deeper than the .38 S&W. However, much like modern day 9mm vs .45 ACP, through harder barriers the .38 S&W IF it penetrated at all was more likely to go in further than the .455 after penetration in my results. Now, the second part... The British military from my understanding going back a long ways had a focus on marksmanship. While I dont know much about if that extended to usage of pistols or not as much as it was focused on rifles, that could be a reason for their choice. Modern knowledge on the subject has shown many people that the idea of "Stopping Power" is a myth. It comes down to adequate penetration and shot placement. The British seem to have known this for some time and as a result, a well placed round from either of these calibers could spell the end of you. However, if you had to shoot more than once for any reason, the lighter recoil of the .38 S&W would allow it to come back on target quicker. This same philosophy was used in Vietnam when replacing the M14 for the M16, was used again when the FBI went away from .40 S&W back to 9mm, and it's the same reason that most modern military units today have a 9mm sidearm instead of a .45 or some other caliber. Now, that being said.. if your shot placement isnt on point, I think you need all the extra help you can get. Poking bigger holes in people is always going to be better than poking a smaller hole in somebody. However, the drawback comes in the form of the recoil. If you cant handle it or havent trained to overcome it, you'll almost always be served better by the .38 S&W. I was lucky to have been in contact with a guy at a time who was loading .455 Webley Mk 3 bullets. The so called "Man Stopper" lead hollow points. Those did horribly, while they did expand they have very shallow penetration. Likewise I've used lead semi-wad cutter hollow points on the .38 S&W that did much better by comparison, but still very shallow penetration compared to the solid lead or jacketed bullets. It's always nice to see these revolvers being displayed. I think they get looked over quite a bit and I'd love to see a modern updated design of them.

Got a Magtech stockist? Ask them for ".38 CBC Special Short", it's ref. 38G. Actually it's basically nitro .38 Short Colt, but it's normally cheaper than proper .38 S&W and works fine. It's actually Brazilian training ammo that fits in both .38 Spl and .38 S&W, and it's pretty good. Surprisingly so. ~Mike

Love the international perspective, and the insight into firearms 'across the pond.' Where is he located that he can own a handgun and actually fire it? Does the UK allow for relic firearm ownership? That all said, was it me or did anyone else notice that his shirt sleeves had a rather interesting pattern on them.

You can actually own conventional handguns with modern cartridges for historical, collecting or mechanical interest, but it's severely restricted (you have to have an FAC already, you have to have someone with a Section 5 FAC carry it to your house/the range where it will be stored, if stored at home, you can't shoot it but if it's at a range, you can't shoot targets with it. You can also own modern handguns for humane dispatch, albeit many with magazine/cylinder restrictions. Blackpowder, long barreled pistols and other oddities are also allowed under an FAC. Revolvers in obsolete calibres made over a hundred years ago can be owned and sold without a certificate or invoice; so if anyone in the UK wants a Webley without dealing with the Section 7 nonsense, try and look out for the pocket model chambered in .320. Or just move to Northern Ireland.

Ive always loved Webley revolvers but did not want to pay the price for one or hunt down ammunition every time i wanted to fire it so i found a local firearms shop that had one of these Enfield revolvers in stock. My revolver is a 1937 model that was stamped for and issued to the RAF and still has its spur. I would recommend this revolver for enthusiast of older british service weapons as it is affordable and the ammunition being 38 S&W is fairly cheap and easy to find.

You can get Webley MKVIs that have been shaved to accept .45 ACP and .45 Autorim but your accuracy won't be too good and I would recommend lighter loads. The Webley is a tough revolver but most of them are getting to be 100 years old.

Idk if this is a good thing, but I like pretty much any revolver that, well reloads the way the Webley above does. I am more of an Clipped pistol, and AK guy. Favorite gun being the Type 81 rifle.

I can agree with you. While a swing out cylinder revolver like a K frame is widely accepted to be the best design, there is something unique and interesting about a top break revolver like the Webley or Schofield
