The M1895 "Nagant" revolver appears pretty standard at a quick glance, but upon closer inspection you can see how unique this little handgun really is. A number of odd features make it somewhat of a curiosity, but it served Imperial Russia and the USSR well until it was gradually phased out of military service by semi-automatic pistols. In this episode of TFBTV, we take a look at the Nagant revolver to see what it can do!
Rumor is that you cannot add a suppressor onto them ...

Two quick items about the Nagant: 1. It was designed as a Single Action. About five years later it was decided to make some Double Action for issue to officers. Just prior to WWII all were made DA. So for all practical purposes its a SA that may be fired DA on occasion. 2. In 1895 there were still unknowns about the performance of that new-fangled smokeless powder. One concern was its performance in extreme cold. The worry was that chamber pressure could drop, hence the 'Sealed Breach' to try and milk every psi from the cartridge. Oh...new ammo tends to work a lot better than that old Soviet stuff.

Surely the misfires and light primer strikes are due to the ammo just being old. Surprised you guys didn't mention that the gas seal also allows your hands/fingers to be in front of the cylinder without being blown off unlike most other revolvers. Gun is fine, comrades.

My Ukrainian Wife's Uncle found one of these in the sixties, while ploughing. The revolver was most probably there since WW II, and was in reasonable condition, not actually ruined, so he took it home and painstakingly rebuilt it thourougly, cleaned it, fixed the firing mechanism and cylinder, hand made new grips and even reblued the revolver in his workshop. Finally, he shot himself in the cheek! He made a large gash through, and was very lucky to survive...

I love your videos but I don't think you gave this gun a fair assessment. There's obviously something wrong with this one particular example. The ammo is very old so we know some of the miss fires are surely due to the ammo but there may be other issues with worn springs or other parts considering it looked like the cylinder jammed a few times or failed to index. I'm just not convinced the guns are this unreliable. They're not known for their power, accuracy, trigger and the loading port is clearly a bad idea but from what I've seen they're usually reliable guns (more reliable than this!) and you made them out to be completely unreliable. Hickok45 has a single take video of this revolver and he shoots 4 cylinders (28 rounds) threw it without a misfire or jam so I already know his was more reliable than this one was. I guess I agree it's a bad revolver overall but I don't think it's inherently unreliable or anything. Also, I hear it can be suppressed.

+TFB TV I noticed in the close up shot that the cartridges were moving back and forth in the cylinder. My 1926 tula the brass doesn't move until you push them out during reloading. I'm thinking that either your cylinder was machined too loose or it has a 32 acp cylinder in it. Did you buy it surplus or 2nd party? Also does the cylinder have a matching serial number? I'm sorta thinking 32 acp conversion cylinder as there seemed to be quite a bit of smoke coming off of it, especially for ppu ammo (the conversion cylinders forgo the gas seal and require fitting to the gun). It could also be an miss machined cylinder, mine had 2 positions that were so tight I had to knock the brass out with the cleaning tool. A good polishing freed them up and I can clear all the positions with my finger.

Wow. You guys really didn't give this revolver a fair trial. I'm not certain what went wrong with yours, but both of mine (a 1930 and a 1919) run flawlessly. Granted, I've only ever shot the surplus ammunition out of them, since the modern production stuff is downloaded and doesn't provide a true representation of what the revolver is capable of. I'm going to guess that your accuracy issues with the revolver stem from the trigger pull. I've never had much issue with the trigger pull: it's heavy, yeah, but manageable. As a result, my groups have always been fairly consistent and accurate out to about 25 yards with both guns. These things, coupled with some of the ways the gun was being held (especially the guy at 4:51, who demonstrated that the gas seal works), show me that you all may have had it out for this revolver from the get-go. Would I use it as my first line of defense? Definitely not. But, would I trust my life to it if I had to? Absolutely. I'm not familiar with you guys, and so I hope that this doesn't come off as being a jerk, but I hate to see such a historic weapon done such a large disservice.

Actually the Nagant revolver did not have any influence or help by Sergei Ivanovich Mosin. Interestingly, the Mosin rifle did not have any major influence by Leon Nagant besides the magazine. In Russia they also simply call it the Mosin rifle, the name Mosin Nagant technically originated from the west.

I have one of these too, manufactured 1944. You pretty much sums up my shooting impressions of the revolver. Oh their suppressor comments take me back.... I used to own 2 of these about 3.5 years ago and every time I went to the range, EVERYONE would say "oh, you can suppress those, did you know that?" Didn't matter if they were Fudd, Hipster, Gun Bunny, or just your average shooter. It used to annoy the ever loving shit out of me to the point I wouldn't take it to the range on busy days. Also, the revolver isn't terrible. There's a reason I owned 2 of them. Both of mine ran flawlessly and I used one (in rougher condition) to clear out drainage pipes and pole barns of opossums and raccoons and my nicer one was what I would use to teach someone on either how to shoot a handgun for the first time or use it on the range for tournaments (before I was absolutely annoyed with everyone thinking they knew more about the revolver that I researched and then purchased).

Honestly, it may be ammunition issues. Russian officers noted that the Nagant is a very reliable weapon, although not particularly accurate. Again, ammunition issues. Apparently, Russian tankers favored this over the Tokarev, most likely because the slide of a Tokarev could get caught on the edge of the pistol ports, where the Nagant doesn't have said slide to interface with firing port.
@Procket12
@Procket12 8 жыл бұрын
It is reasonably accurate in SA mode. The inaccuracy can pretty much be attributed to the extremely heavy DA pull. Revolvers have historically been a favorite of tank crewman because of the fact that there's not brass flying around in an enclosed space.
@Karpaneen

Also Nagant, like other revolvers, won't shoot out shells like a pistol does. In a tank it's not really neat having pistol cartridge shells flying all over the place.

I have fired several examples of this revolver that were originally Okhrana issued, with threaded barrels and Maxim silencers. With the silencer installed, the only sound audible was the hammer's click. If a Nagant has a weak mainspring, failures to fire are inevitable. They aren't bad generally, with their weakest feature being the loading gate, which causes wasted time ejecting spent brass and loading fresh rounds. It is about average for the time period in which it was designed. The bottlenecked cartridge and cylinder movement was supposed to add velocity to what was already a weak cartridge. Russia would have been better off staying with the S&W revolvers they had imported. The .44 Russian round has more energy than the 7.62 Nagant, and the existing S&W revolvers could have been upgraded to .44 Special.

I can't keep it up. Save $50 more bucks and buy a hi-point if you absolutely can't afford a gun over $200. P.S. Every once in a while... no... every once in a BLUE MOON their are rare examples of fairly decent revolvers of this type that function fairly well especially once you are used to shooting them. Have shot over 20 different Nagant revolvers in my life. (When I was younger and WAY poorer Me and about 10 other buddies of mine have had about 20 different ones pass through our hands.) I picked one up a couple of years ago. One trip to the range convinced me of what a nice wall decoration it was. I have never felt a trigger quite like this one. The double action gives your trigger finger a great work out. On single action I was trying to gently push the trigger to the rear and actually hit something. The trigger "broke" cleanly at about seventy five pounds, but the reset kicked my finger forward before the hammer could drop. It ended up being eased gently forward and didn't fire the round. What a great gun. Sure looks pretty up on my wall. It doesn't make any noise up there, so I guess I suppressed it the cheap and easy way.

I owned 2 of them and had to unfortunately sell both of them and most of my firearms to help myself financially get going again but I loved both of my Nagant revolvers with a passion. I used to take them to the range and at 25 yards doing a dual wield with "cowboy style" single action shooting it worked well with 14 hits on target. Granted, I know it's not the best revolver on the market by any stretch but they're fun to shoot and great for anything from chipmunks to raccoons.

The 't' is silent - Nagan[t]. It is a beautiful gun, and was considered fairly reliable for the time and place, taking into account the cost concerns of the Russian government when it searched for updates of weaponry. (Do remember, that the Nagant cam to Russia as part of a rearmament policy, rather than as a free commercial import for the public in general.) The Russians considered it a welcome shift from the S&W Mod. 3 which was very unpopular among officers because of its weight. Also, pistols were considered last resort weapons by many in the Russian officer class, who saw swords as the par excellence weapon for close combat, and rifles as the weapon of choice when distance was involved; so power was considered secondary to reliability and size.

Ive owned several of these and never had an issue except with surplus junk ammo. I bought one and 100rds of surplus fodder for $30 years ago. i carried it on the farm sometimes when I wanted a beltgun heavier then a.22 because it was like a Mosin rifle, good beater gun. It was minute of rabbit and varmints out to 30 yards. Ended up with several at one time. The one I carried I shot probably 400-500 rds thru and it never failed to go bang except lke mentioned with questionable fodder.

This revolver isn't really meant to be aimed with sights. You're supposed to just point and shoot with one hand at people who retreat from the enemy.

Just a heads up, most new ammo for the 7.62 nagant uses a .308 bullet. most barrels are .310 to .313. thats why the accuracy is horrible. I use resized 32-20 brass and make a conventional cartridge with .312 98 grain or 100 grain cast bullet, with a healthy charge of trailboss or 4756.

@tarstakars 8 жыл бұрын
oh and by the way the ejector rod under the barrel is really only for stuck cases, on my revolver I just tip it up rotate the cylinder with the gate open and the cases drop out if you have one that hangs up you can stick your finger in the front of the cylinder just give it a little push and it will drop out which makes loading a little bit quicker

Instead of the 8mm standard cartridge, you can substitute it with .32 S&W Long. Actually makes a decent trail pistol for squirrels and rabbits for the stew pot without breaking the bank. You just have to practice and work with it instead of ripping through rounds and cussing at it.

Not a fair shake, but an honorable attempt. Some of the features on the revolver (when it was designed) were fairly new, but also bound to be eclipsed by the time of the turn of the 20th century. I personally see it as a niche firearm for those that like history. The one I have is from the 1930's, appearing to have had a squib load at one time. And the trigger pull, though atrocious, reflected the marksmanship of the time. Holding the pistol similar to the competitive British stances that brought about the Bisley style of Colt Single Action Army grips, hammers, and triggers. One hand on hip, bladed slightly towards the target, arm bent in a odd position in today's vision of ergonomics. But it is quite interesting that there were target versions and even Olympic competition pistols made from the M1895. The nature of using a fired bullet as a wedge to lighten the main spring considerably being a common practice, and evidence of the shooters that used them having to modify the kit they had on hand to compete with others that had newer equipment. Through it all, the pistol has a storied past, and remains as a firearm that I'd like to see made as new with modern and better loads than currently available. TL;DR >"This gun sucks, the trigger is so bad!" >git gud

No offense meant to you, team of the TFB TV; I have been suscribed to your channel for the last few months and I intend to keep it that way, since I really like your work and the fact that you posted very appreciative (and deserved) videos on French weapons, but it seems to me, in comparison with what I am used to watching your videos, that your judgement is usually a bit less hasty and definitive. Apart from that, I have not yet tested a Nagant revolver myself, so, what can I say ? Anyway, keep up the good work, it is a pleasure to watch your gun tests.

And on second thought, just looking at the way that the "unsuspecting" shooter at the end was handling the revolver makes me think this channel is slightly less reputable than I thought. He's not wearing eye protection and his fingers are straddling the front trigger guard?! Has he ever shot a revolver?? If it wasn't for the way that this revolver is built to eliminate cylinder gas blow off, this guy might not have all of his fingers. Maybe you should thank the revolver for being more idiot proof than most.

I remember shooting one of these for the first time, I borrowed it from another shooter, and pulled the trigger and I thought the gun was broke so I handed it back to the owner and he confirmed that it was, in fact, not broke; but it did have a trigger pull in the range of 25 lbs.

Haha, yes, the quality of these is all over the place. Sometimes you get a tack driver with a somewhat smooth trigger, and sometimes you get a clunker that kind of sort of works sometimes. They are also a pain to smooth up, but they do respond well if you go though the trouble of doing so.

nagant revolver it is a very good gun. The fact that gun comes jammed or have a hard trigger is because you "masters of shooting" must check the cylinder pawl. In every revolver the cylinder pawl comes consumed after hundreds shooting and it must be replaced. Nothing comes wrong with that gun, just it is your way of shooting....Just remember. That gun is produced for more than 50 years
@Viper0hr
@Viper0hr 8 жыл бұрын
I think your Nagant may have needed some deep cleaning in the handle actions, it seems really tight. I have 2, and one is very tight on a double action pull, somewhat like what yours seems like, but the other one has a very light double action pull and is very accurate and nice to shoot, the tighter one I pretty much always fire single action when i can. Other than the occasional dud due to 50+ year old ammo I have never head any operating issues with either of mine, and both are fairly accurate, the last time I shot mine I was able to hit a 5x5 target at 25 yards 6 out of 7 shots. Personally, I think the whole "well known" due to suppression thing is dumb, yeah it's cool that it is the only revolver that you can suppress, but the moving cylinder and ammo type is "cooler" because it increases the pressure behind the bullet allowing better accuracy compared to other similar calibers IMO.

Are you sure the gun was the problem and not the ammo? My guess would've been bad primers, and not light hammer strikes, since even after you re-fired them, the primers never ignited. Also, I noticed that when the cyllinder moved forward, the caseheads would protrude out the rear. Were there ever any issues with casehead separation during firing?

@Lieutenant_Dude
@Lieutenant_Dude 8 жыл бұрын
Technically, it didn't jam. There was a dud possibly on one, but definitely there were a few times when the shooter didn't pull the trigger the full length to cock the hammer, revolver the cylinder, move the cylinder forward, and release the hammer. The mother has a good 20 pound trigger pull, so I would be surprised if you didn't have a few misfires due to not fully engaging the whole assembly.
