ENGINE RATTLE! Kia Rio for a timing chain, lifters and rocker arms!

Ive always wondered, when he rotated the cams to line up the timing would crank have to be off TDC to stop valve hitting pistons? Or can you freely just rotate the cams? Might be silly question but I’m not a mechanic just enjoy car repair videos!

No crank wouldn’t of been off as the timing is set to the correct place before taking the chain off.. so with me moving the cams you will feel resistance if you go too far

Nice instructive video this, well done! Just at the stage on my own Rio where the timing chain cover needs removing, but it seems mine is a lot more stubborn than in your case. Where do you recommend as a safe place to pry the cover off? I can't see anywhere that would suggest so without bending the cover itself

Appreciate that buddy, most use a thin piece of wood against the cam pulley and then pry. Doesn’t damage the pulley then

@@owensautotips Cheers, worked nicely that did! Got it all back together and timed up following this video so hopefully it starts up later! Just noticed as well, that this is a slightly different engine. What is it and what's the model year?

I realise you don't work at at franchised dealer now - hence why you don't have to use genuine parts. Doing this Kia noted you are not using genuine parts - is there a reason for this - cheaper or are some patent parts as good or better and is there a manufacturer you prefer? Very interesting video, thou also interested why all these parts were replaced as noted only 15plate or has it high mileage.

Being at independent customers get prices on what they ask for. So if they want genuine then we will do that but if they can’t afford it then they tend to go with the cheaper parts

@@BunkerNeverDies full job couple of hours.. I can do the chain kit in under 2 hours due to experience in ex Hyundai tech.. but if it’s new to you then I’d say a couple of hours 👍

@@owensautotips Thank you, timing isn't new to me - I'm a mechanic for a living, although I mostly work on Chevy and Fords (5.4 tritons are a nightmare in comparison) I'm just limited on time. I do appreciate your timely response.

I have compression of 6 bars in all four cylinders , timing chain is new but my car does not start

@@Mikusin check the coil pack fuse in the engine bay. If a coil goes it blows the fuse

Hey buddy, I've recently replaced timing chain all 4 guides and new tensioner on my Rio. Due to rattle (worse from cold) Sounds 100% like timing chain rattle. After replacing all the parts the rattle is still there and I'd say it's getting worse. All Kia genuine parts used. Any ideas what can cause that? Do you know if these suffer with vvt pulleys making rattle noises? Or something like oil pump not creating enough pressure for the tensioner? Why are you changing the rockers and lifters, cant quite hear what you said in the video? Many thanks 👍

I changed the lifter and rockers due to them seizing up, could be the pump chain or like you said pick up could be blocked and causing less oil pressure.. if a turbo model could be the turbo actuator rattling
