The highly anticipated GE E60 edition of Engines of Amtrak is finally here! Today I discuss the General Electric E60, the first new electric locomotive built post-Amtrak era in the United States. The E60 originated out of Arizona on an isolated coal hauling railroad known as the Black Mesa & Lake Powell (BM&LP) and the locomotive eventually made it's way to Amtrak for passenger service. However, while expectations were high for the E60 with thoughts it would easily replace the aging GG1 and mechanically-unreliable Metroliner EMU's, the Amtrak E60 didn't fair well in practice due to their six axle freight styled trucks and led to consistent problems. Learn more about the history of the E60 in this video and how it came to be part of Amtrak's history book! Hope you enjoy, thanks for watching, and stay tuned for the Metroliner video. It may be delayed for sometime as summer is ending for me in a couple weeks and school will be back once again. I hope you guys can understand and please be patient waiting for the Metroliner video. I don't devote all my time to this series as I have said before. I have other videos to work on and other personal things to do as well.

Please go watch the remade version of this episode! ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpSpi4WtiN2lgNU ) I think its a lot more accurate, condensed and to the point, more enjoyable and watchable than the old version. I'll be keeping the old episodes up on KZbin as I know people still like watching them, but still, please check out the new version!

CoCo locomotives can go really fast the DB class 103 has been running services at up to 200km/h around the same time. It's more a matter of using freight bogies instead of ones designed for higher speed.

In the early-to-mid 2000s, Amtrak actually had plans to rebuild AMTK 603 to modern standards specifically as a work locomotive for Ballast and rail trains, but the plan quickly fell out of favor after it was found that it would cost more to fix up and modernize the locomotive than anticipated, and seeing as the locomotive would never turn a profit, Amtrak dropped the idea. Also, quick side-note, the final few E60MAs left were actually sold back to GE, who then proceeded to have them scrapped before they even reached GE in Erie, PA. Great video all around though

Having been an Amtrak Conductor since 1990, I worked many times with this flawed locomotive; The biggest problem the E-60 had was it was build with "freight" trucks that were never designed for high-speed rail, but great for work trains and pulling very-long, heavy consists. When the engine exceeded 85mph, you could feel the "yaw" beginning and then the "sway" due the centrifugal force the E-60's enormous weight incurred; My late, great Dad was "Division Road Foreman" for Amtrak from 1973 till 1982, overseeing all locomotive operations on the Northeast corridor and he despised the E-60. He actually was involved in a derailment when the engine was just at 92mph, and because of the yaw generated by the notorious freight trucks, the "journals" or axles/wheels fell between the gauge, but thankfully no injuries or serious damage. Amtrak did propose having either the Elecro-motor division develop and retro-fit the E-60 with more passenger/high-speed trucks, reducing it to two axles and other performance-enhancements to make them more safe and efficient. The price was too high for a full-retro-fit, so the engine remained in service, but by the time I joined in 1990, it's passenger days were coming to a close and it was much more valuable as a "work train" locomotive to pull the enormous amount of materials during the 1992-1999 "Northeast Corridor" electrification. The last trip an E-60 ever made was in early 2003, pulling a work train and then it was retired. This was an engine that had as much pulling power as a GG-1 and had many advantages over the GG-1 especially when it came to visibility with a "duel" cab and other enhancements such as the deletion of the oil-burning, steam-generating heating/power the GG-1 possessed to warm the passenger consist and light it. The E-60 eventually had HEP installed along with more advanced "cab signal" systems. But it's failure was strictly down to the damn, antiquated "freight" trucks which severely hampered the prospects of engine that could've been memorable instead of being the butt of joke by engineers and other employees. RIP E-60

In truth, had the E60 been rigged as a 2-B+B-2 (a B+B configuration like that of the AEM-7, HHP-8, and ACS-64 locomotives, but with the lead and trailing axles being unpowered) instead of the original C+C, I think that the E60 could have avoided the issues that the C+C freight bogies gave to Amtrak and could have allowed the E60 to achieve higher-speed rail (110 mph) service, provided that the infrastructure (being the tracks) was upgraded to allow for 125-150 mph service. In other words, this E60 configuration would have been this: xoo---------------oox x = unpowered axle o = powered axle

The E-60 on Amtrak is a perfect example of Amtrak trying, yet again, to force a freight locomotive to hump passenger trains. The E-60 dual, or single cabs would have been far better suited to hauling symbol freight, unit ore, or coal trains, than passenger cars. Conrail would not have ended electrified operations if Amtrak had not been such asses about who had to pay what % of the electric bill.

Would have worked out well for Conrail had they maintained the overhead catenary on the Trenton Cutoff, the Atglen & Susquehanna (a.k.a. "Low-Grade") Line between Atglen and Middletown (near the TMI Nuclear Power Plant), the Columbia Secondary between Columbia and Lancaster, and the Columbia & Port Deposit Line between Safe Harbor and the NEC in Port Deposit, MD.

The way I see it, the E-60, or the "Flying Brick" as it was nicknamed, would be an excellent choice for heading up an excursion train. One would be ideal for a mountain train, especially in the north west on the old Great Northern Railway through the Cascade Tunnel. One could head up a heritage "Empire Builder" train--just as the big W-1 electric locomotives had done many years ago. Only this time, with conversion to 60Hz electric catenary lines, a locomotive with 1,000 more horsepower than the W-1 giants could ply its trade through the North West.

Well, getting rid of that 11 tons of steaming heating equipment made the E60 locomotives a lot more viable in Amtrak service. I think the switch to head-end power (HEP) was why EMD was able to keep the AEM-7 weight down. I really wonder what would have happened had Amtrak rebuilt the SDP40F to get rid of the heavy steam-heating equipment in favor of a much lighter HEP unit; it's possible they could have lasted in Amtrak service until 2000.

One little footnote you didn't mention in the E60's history: the basic design of the locomotive was pioneered by the GE E42C model built for Taiwan's railways. They had similar propulsion components, a same basic carbody design, and used the same electrification system - the E60C was simply upscaled to standard gauge from metric gauge.

These E60s used to run on the n.y.c. - boston route by my house. I always thought their design was uninspired; learning that their original purpose was to haul coal made sense. They looked more appropriate in the vintage footage as such. Thx f/posting 👍

I wish Amtrak e60 610 from 30th street station would be rebuilt into an Amtrak e60ch and it will have an acela paint scheme and it will have a new speedometer that goes from 0mph to 205mph and at 200mph it overheats and the pantograph comes off and when it passes it at 201mph the pantograph exsplodes and the locomotive to and at 195mph it overheats and the beeping noise begins to start and it can reach from 0mph to 190mph and it will doublehead with Amtrak e60 603 in st. Patrick's day and it will go under a restoration until February 1st 2018 and it will run again on febuaru 2nd 2017 and it will be used in the keystone corridor on sundays, mondays, & on tuesdays south and north and it will be used in the northeast corridor on wendsdays, Thursdays, & Friday's and it will be working in the ivy city yard every Saturdays and it will pull the Patrick's day express and it will doublehead with 603 and it will do it from Washington d.c to Boston

Many thanks for the hard work you have put in on this extremely interesting video. I've always liked AMTRAK Locos particularly the E60's, but here in the UK, we don't get the chance to see much of them!

So you were trying to say the aem-7 looked like a toaster? Hmm maybe that’s not bad. They body shapes do look alike. xD. Maybe you were roasting the aem-7 or wondering why you had a toaster in your pictures.

The Genesis locomotive is the most beautiful out of all the Diesel-electric locomotives in the US. The new Siemens diesel-electric locomotives look like a cheap Walmart toy compared to the Genesis. Amtrak should rebuild their Genesis fleet like VIA rail in Canada did, but I think Amtrak is forced to buy new locomotives because our government requires cleaner diesel emission locomotives. I will miss the Genesis when they're all retired, it's just such a beautiful intimidating beast of a locomotive.

What a shitty fucking train, not only is a used Mexican one, its max speed is 116km/h and restricted to 56km, what a joke. I am going to look at the Siemens Taurus, not only does it go 230-250km/h, it also sings when it start moving.

those are some beautiful loco's, to bad they had so many problems. But why do Amtrak locomotives have such short lifespans, here in the Netherlands we still have locs from the 1700 series driving around and those things where build in the 70s and 80s
