We have: Bellingham - a world class 8 or 10 Foden - a world class 10 Rice - a world class 6/8 hybrid Those 3 could easily play together if we played Watkins instead of Kane up front OR played Kane with Saka and Gordon as the wide options offering pace in behind to stretch teams. Alternatively, we have a tempo setting midfielder in Wharton who could play alongside Rice, freeing him up to push on as a box to box 8. Then it’s simply a choice between Foden or Bellingham (or Palmer) at 10. Whoever isn’t picked can come off the bench and also apply pressure on the selected option to perform.

I look back at Mexico 86, England has been toying with a number of strikers to partner Liniker, with Mark Hately the preferred, England lost and drew their first two games, but with Robson’s future on the line, he started with Beardsley in preference to Hately. England then hammered Poland and Paraguay, the team playing brilliant. Why I say this, it’s a moment of truth coming up for SG, will he be ambitious and go with pace and guile, like Watkins and Palmer, or stick with the same old and always be remembered as such.

Just finished watching the Slovenia match. It demonstrated a few things clearly: 1. Foden + Bellingham = total absence of attacking threat on the left side of the pitch. It was quite stunning that Gareth stood there for 89 minutes and did absolutely nothing about this. 2. Anthony Gordon should be given a chance. He immediately looked a threat when he came on. In the 89th minute. 3. We all love Jude Bellingham, but he isn't the messiah. He stank the place out and should have been hooked. Nobody is bigger than the team. 4. Palmer is a better option off the bench than Bowen (if that was in any doubt before, it isn't now).

Palmer doesn’t solve the problem. Saka plays on the right and he does a good job. The things we need, in order of priority, are: 1. Control in the midfield 2. A viable structure on the left of the pitch 3. A coherent press 4. A threat in behind the line of defence, someone who can get defenders running towards their own goal 5. A plan about what to do when Pickford has the ball at his feet under no pressure. Do we kick long? If so, when? Do we play out? If so, when? It hasn’t looked like anyone knows the answer to those questions. As for the answers: 1. I think Wharton is the man. He’s the only one in that squad who can play a disciplined role in the centre of the park linking the play and able to progress the ball. Rice is a dynamic midfielder, that isn’t his game. Same goes for Jude. What’s needed is a point of stability. Mainoo could be that in years to come, but right now he tends to drift. 2. This is a bit of a problem. Gordon gets my vote in the attacking position, but there’s no clear solution at LB. I’d give Gomez a shot. He was good for Liverpool second half of the season. Can also play in a three at the back if - big if - Stones steps into the midfield. 3. I don’t get why this is a big problem. They all play at pressing clubs. I think the problem is they don’t have a structure that works. Give them a structure to work within and they can do their job more effectively. 4. For me, that’s Gordon. Or Watkins. Or both. I’m happy with the idea of dropping Kane, but I’m also happy if he starts. As long as there’s some threat in behind. Without that, we’re too easy to defend against. One dimensional. 5. Playing out from the back presumes an ability to progress the ball and play through a press. We haven’t done that so far, so it’s no wonder Pickford has been lumping it long more than he should be. So this goes back to point 1 IMO. Fix that and we fix this too.

Guehi doing well is an example of a player playing well in his position. If you played Guehi at right back, he'd be receiving similar criticism... Just find a system that works for most of our world class players, then pick best players in their position. This may mean when doing the selection process, dropping a world class player but the team comes first. Media across the world is saying it - England are trying to squeeze best players in and haven’t worked out what its best team is. France has world class players on the bench because they don't suit the preferred system - this is what it takes to win an international tournament

It seems, not unreasonably, that Kane is our main man. So if we are going to play him it means we absolutely need to surround him with pace. Either put Watkins up with him and play Rice and Bellingham in a 4-4-2 (not the problem it would seem because Kane drops in to make it a central midfield 3). Alternatively, play Saka and Gordon on the wings as they offer direct runners in behind. If instead we want to control games through dominating the midfield, play Wharton with Rice, build through midfield. Play Saka on the left to stretch the opposition and create space in the middle for Palmer coming in from the right, Bellingham or Foden at 10 and instruct Kane to play high up the pitch or swap him for Toney/Watkins.

Easy - you leave out Foden. If you play Gordon LW, Saka RW, Rice as a 6, Bellingham 8 and Palmer as a 10. Rice sits and protects for the most part, although using Trippier as cover would allow Rice to push forward when he needs to without us being caught too exposed. Bellingham tends to drift towards the left and Palmer drifts towards the right, its gives us a much better balance to our midfield and we have the width with our 2 proper wingers. That is a much better balance to our midfield.

The answer is simple. This is how we line up. Pickford, Trent stones guehi walker, rice, Jude, foden, saka Palmer kane. When we attack, walker becomes cbs, stones steps up into midfield, foden Bellingham becomes your 10s, one right side one left side, Trent becomes right winger with Palmer over there and Phil, other side is rice, saka, Bellingham, stones plays the pivot, stepping up into midfield. Against a team on the counter we have to drop to our own half then press, otherwise it will be 4 v 3 in there favour, and when we get fully back in shape you defend as a 5, with saka as lwb Trent rwb. When we hold defence shape, Bellingham has done left mid defence all season, so if we lose the ball and the counter on, he is on the left cam role to play that defending left mid role with saka playing the deeper defence role in the end, but Jude would be there initially whilst saka gets back and rice returning to anchor and stones making the 3 whilst we recover the ball. It's what everyone has done brilliantly all season, Bellingham left side and coming from deep and an 8, foden being the ten, Palmer being better than saka on the right, Trent being Trent as a right wing back, with someone doing his defending for him, it just works to get everyone in

Just play Palmer up front. He's got the stature of a centre forward, plus the ability, technique and he can make the runs as well. My preferred line up would be: Pickford in goal; back line of Stones, Rice and Guéhi; Alexander-Arnold on the right wing; Bellingham and Wharton in midfield; I'd play Saka on the left wing; Foden on "10"; Gordon and Palmer up front. This line up gives flexibility. Rice should move into midfield in possession giving Bellingham the change to move up. Wharton can back Saka when he's making runs.

If Kane is the main man then the shape has to be like Bayern Munich with young fit RUNNERS going beyond him into the wide pockets. Anthony Gordon and Saka either side stretch defences. Foden and Palmer do the same job as Kane. Saka is working well (except when he’s subbed off) but Foden isn’t Grealish or Doku - Anthony Gordon is the closest we’ve got to create the space for Kane…
@jeremymuir43326 ай бұрын
yes, not all quality players are going to play their best in a given system. Harry wants to be a 10. Foden wants to be a 10. Bellingham keeps being played as a 10 when actually I think he's better as an 8. The moment you replace Kane or Foden, England going forward actually have more options. The pretence that Kane is a captain is frustrating too. He's not the presence people respond to.

It’s a very simple thing You need width that stays wide Bellingham only played 10 for Madrid as they didn’t have a striker, he made his name as a 8 Put Jude where TAA was Foden central Someone who runs in behind wide left, so no Palmer but Gordon fits the bill Kane up top
