If you live in the UK this new legislation should concern you regardless of your political affiliation. We're not talking about foreign policy or economic measures, we're talking about the basic human right to protest against something that you disagree with. In some cases, such as those who glue themselves to roads there does need to be an ability for the police to clear the disruption, however this legislation opens up a significant can of worms in regards to over policing and protest quashing. Whether or not you think it affects you now it certainly could in the future.

+1 for calling out the neverending freedom-eroding legislation, which was hastily passed and has since been expanded upon by both Republicans and Democrats after 9/11. There's a constant, and I feel increasing of late, number of tweets that I see that are basically "Yes, this really is how it works in the US, and yes, this is how the people can and do get treated." Things like workers' rights, recent legislation, gun (non-)control, etc. If there's one thing that we humans are good at, it's building up some great things, then having some others come in and trying to screw it all up in the guise of "public safety" and "freedoms"

I can't help but think, "you get what you deserve!". I witnessed the introduction of illegal practices being adopted by the police back in the 1990s and spent years telling people that we were at risk of losing all of our rights if nothing was done to hold them to account. I'm talking about police turning up to protests with masks and with no identifying numbers displayed on their uniforms. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when hordes of uniformed officers with no I.D. turned up to square up to the people protesting the first Gulf war... They used a procedure called 'Kettling', I believe, where they confined us into an ever shrinking space to the point that people were getting trampled by each other and then the cavalry rode their massive horses through the crowd... of peaceful people including mothers with small children, pushchairs and prams. I couldn't believe how many people were willing to knowingly break the law in order to defend the government's decision to go to war. There were hundreds of them! Nobody gave a damn, not even when it happened again for the second Gulf war. This latest legislation carries all the hallmarks of the extreme arrogance of the political elite who have been in charge for so long without even the slightest threat to their authority emerging in over a hundred years. People have been happy to accept the loss of their rights and freedoms without complaint or resistance and the powers that be have no respect for us anymore.

love the video, just wanna say as someone who works in a football stadium in the uk, and has to do a lot of coordinating with the police, i can say first hand that majority of the police (at least in my experience) think of football fans as almost a herd of dogs they’re trying to get in and out of the stadium without causing any issues. The way the treat them is most often with an attitude of guilty until they get home. It becomes so obvious from being there when you see the difference in how they interact with people who are just walking through the area in comparison to anybody wearing a football shirt

Both clubs are from two of Poland’s biggest cities, and both play in stadiums built for Euro 2012 with capacities of over 40,000, which are now way too big for both teams. Now both clubs average about 5-10,000 people at matches, well short of capacity. It looks like both stadiums are possibly white elephants. Shame because they’re both fantastic cities.

The crackdown on peaceful protests in countries which are meant to have strong democratic institutions is truly abhorrent & just another way for the rich & powerful to be able to continue pretending that they have no real opposition. And I genuinely think that 95% of the people who freak out whenever football (or any other cultural touchstone like film or music) and politics are mentioned in the same sentence are just conservatives who are upset because they know they're about to hear a bunch of critiques about policies and beliefs they hold. Because any reasonable person realises that virtually EVERYTHING is linked in some way to politics and can listen to a reasonable discussion about either topic.

Southport should have been relegated from the National League National the season before (having been reprieved at the post season National League AGM due to another club (Rushden and Diamonds?) announcing it was going out of business, a semi-regular situation that's been nicknamed the "AGM Cup"). We got Poku and another player on loan for half a season as part of a deal transferring John Paul Kissock to Luton- we were all gloomy at first as Kissock was something of a flair player, but the team's performances that season were great, with 8 away wins in a row (including six where we scored three goals) although the home form wasn't quite as good. The performances dropped off slightly after the loan period ended but we still managed to maintain a decent level of form such that we were still in contention for a playoff place going into April, which, for a part time club in a mostly professional league, was definitely punching above our weight.

Football's also been a focus for organizing protests in places like Egypt and Iran, where between fans and police often have been political or become political, and organizers of those protests have then went on to teach tactics to others who agree with them politically.

Don’t insult the crime syndicates out there. They don’t deserve to be insulted to be associated with the Conservatives in the UK

It's a disgrace this is the first step to a one party system, that and the conservative party making harder to vote.

Thanks for bringing Brazilian protests into positive lighting, but they were pointless in the end. World cup still happened with all the "expected problems"

Don’t know why people are mad at Alfie for discussing politics when soccer has always been a working class sport. The working class continues to be punished across the world until we get driven out.

Except football fans constantly harass people for not going to games and belittle their status as fans because they can't, such a working class attitude that is

I'm gonna put in another request for a hypothetical starting XI for the East African Federation, a proposed federation (big surprise there) of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. None of them are exactly what you'd call powerhouse footballing nations, with the exception of the DRC, but with plenty of players from those nationalities in the French and German leagues there's bound to be some diamonds in the rough. I did actually send Alfie a Twitter DM detailing my own attempt at an EAF first team, complete with a kit design and a subs bench, but since that didn't get a response I can only assume it got lost in the post. It's not like he'd ignore an unsolicited private message about putting together a national football team for a country that doesn't exist, right? Right? This is request number 37; calling it a streak feels a little disingenuous considering I miss days a lot of the time due to my health. I intend to go for as long as I can until Alfie either makes the video or tells me to bugger off. I'm sure you have your own opinions about which is more likely. =]
