English words derived from Arabic?!

In the 19th century George Bethune English, who studied Arabic at Harvard University, attained a masters degree. He wanted to prove that English words had Semitic roots in Hebrew by studying Noah Websters 1828 Dictionary. What he actually found was that English words had more of a Semitic root in Arabic. In this video we present our participants with Arabic words and they have to guess what they are in English. Enjoy!

Many empires have spread and been conquered and taken over by different cultures and people. Much like many religions have changed over the years as far as how they agreed to worship. Like many Abrahamic religions have common practices that are rooted in paganism (astrology or animism elements) but may deny it. I often questioned why many religions have their worship sites lit with candles in lieu of lightbulbs to have element of fire and incense burning to have element of air and salt to have element of Earth. Boy did I jump to a different subject.

Portugal comes from the Arabic word for orange (when they ruled Spain - Al Andalus - for 800 years, they brought citrus trees with them and planted them throughout what is now both Spain and Portugal).

@-- if you speak Arabic, you know the word for orange (bor-tu-gal). When the Arabs ruled Al Andalus, they brought citrus trees (they were planted throughout the region). It was also a light in Europe during the dark ages (look up Cordoba and Granada as examples). Even Gibraltar comes from jabal Tariq (mountain of Tariq). It might be good for you to look into history (from another point of view).

@-- after 800 years of Arab rule, you can't tell me some Arabic words didn't become part of the Spanish language (the same happened with Sicily, but to a lesser degree bc it wasn't for as long a period of time). It's history most Westerners aren't educated on (but the info is out there if you care to look for it). Look up Dr. Abdullah Quick "Spain" or "The Untold Stories of History". Very informative.

Actually there is no mix-up, alcohol is from alkuhl (eyeliner), however now the word alkuhool is used for alcohols, so it was re adapted into arabic from English. So now in arabic there are two words with same origin.

I couldn't read all the comments so here what I can remember trying to avoid the words I could find here whether in the comments or the video itself: Admiral= Amir Albihar = أمير البحار Banana = Banan Almawz= بنان الموز , Banan in Arabic is every thing that is long or elongated the word also appears in Quran who can remember the verse? Some say that Portugal came from Arabic as the land of Burtuqal or land of oranges but I can not confirm this yet. Anyway there is a whole dectionary compiled by Oxford on such a topic.

Actually, most of these are colloquial dialectal, non-standard arabic. Telephone is indeed "talifoon" (or a variant of that) in most common day dialects, but the standard-arabic word for it is Hatef, derived from the word-root H-T-F (hatf), meaning "chant". Same with most other words... Radio is "Mizya3" (and radio/tv-station is Iza3a) and so on...
