I totally agree with what you say. I would add that I believe there is a deeper dimension than what the mind and the the body are experiencing now: what they have experienced in the past and stocked in the body memory. PTSDs, Traumas, Chronic depression and anxiety, etc. can be a big obstacle in freediving, and I believe their origin and cause should be analyzed through meditation and other practices. This way, freediving can be an opportunity to heal and grow, both showing you the obstacle and rewarding you of the bliss of freediving during your healing steps. I wonder what do you think about this "diachronic dimension" of freediving:) hugs

I agree, I often see this type of thing, freediving has this knack of bringing things up in people and challenging how they see themselves and treat themselves.

But what about sheer blind terror fear of drowning at depth, how on earth does someone who is as terrified as me have any chance of overcoming it?

Andrew Cullum I think I can understand your feeling because I have experienced strong emotional fears myself. There are many ways to overcome that panic but the first and foremost is by facing it gradually. Fears often hide other suppressed emotions or tell us there's something to change in our life. Come do apnea therapy in Tenerife with me:)

And I absolutely Will never Fly in Helicopters either, it's my perception of risk, that must be different to other people.

I think because it's so deep seated that perhaps Hypnotherapy might be the only option I have??

Eq, the feeling of the water, your technique, physical relaxation etc

Sorry but I don't believe that desensitisation will work for me, because, I also have a fear of flying in Airliners, despite being an owner and pilot of a light Aircraft. I've flown numerous times in Airliners. It's loss of control that's the issue., and of course, at depth in water, again, you have NO CONTROL.

I assume you are quite new to freediving. Because your belief that you have no control under the water is the opposite to what freediving is. Its about full control over your mind and your body. Your dive, your perception is all down to you.
