I'm a 6w5 and I lost my father early in my childhood and my mother was so protective of me and I depended on her and my relatives for everything which kind of backfired as they were abusive and I started searching that father figure outside which lead to being manipulated and cheated by some people. I had this habit of seeking validation, guidance & project my insecurities onto those father figures. With my 5 wing I found answers for my own problems and became more self confident and self assured now-a-days. Still I have anxiety about my career, financial security & future relationship compatibility. You got everything right I guess😊. You forgot to mention the personality disorders associated with enneagram six as I had to work on my BPD to become healthy. This is the best video I have seen related to this topic so far and helped me understand myself better. Thanks

This is a brilliant video. It took me an hour to watch because I kept rewinding it lol. Particularly the description of 6w7. And how you explained the triad and how 6s are right in the middle of 5 and 7 so fluctuate between the two. Also the point about not being able to apologise is definitely something I’ve noticed in 6s and never understand why. Thank you. This great

I figured out I'm a type 6 when I took a test and the test literally punched me in the gut with how it just figured me out immediately. And with me choosing to be a realistic individual rather than optimistic or pessimistic, I often see a lot of people talking about things that hit close to home. Oddly enough I have traits of Types 2 and 6, but I'm pretty sure that's because everyone wants to be loved and supported.

2s and 6s definitely have ton in common. If you review the section on triads, those groupings explain a lot of the overlap (like the compliant group does for 2s & 6s)

This was so accurate! The childhood part was spot on and enlightening to see from an enneagram perspective. The examples you give and the depth and accuracy with which you explain it set you apart from other channels/information sources. I'm hoping to see a video about career choices. Several sites list veterinarian as a good 6 option. But I've burnt out and lots of aspects of the job give me a sense of uncertainty, stress and anxiety. Discovering I'm a six has helped and I think part of the job was about overcompensating, pleasing and receiving external validation. I'm in the process of orienting for another job with more safety, structure and less client interaction and stress. What you said about stopping and listening to your inner voice is my big challenge now because I want to manically rationalize and question others to have a decision as soon as possible 🙈

I'm glad it resonated with you and felt helpful! I really appreciate the kind words about the depth & accuracy of the content. A video on career choices is a great idea! I have a series coming up about enneagram types at work which will be a similar topic. Many 6s struggle with what you shared. We have have that one particular pain point that we'll wrestle with to varying degrees for a lifetime, but I believe your self-awareness about it is already a huge step in the right direction. So, bravo! Finding a fulfilling career is certainly a difficult process for most of us, but I wish you the best on the journey and hope to provide some more helpful content soon!

These videos are not just useful on a personal level, though I have found them so - as a creative type, the Enneagram has revolutionized my creation and use of fictional characters as well. While characters aren't people, they are trying to give that impression for the duration of the story, so best for them to act the part. Also, I think I'm a 6w5, so having things like systems in place I can rely on and which support me and even recognizing within myself that inherent drive at the heart of my being, uh, it's been pretty important. I feel like I was living in the vibes until very recently, and channels like yours and LocalScriptMan (who clued me in to the Enneagram in the first place) have been revolutionary.

I've identified as an Enneagram 8 for years because I exhibit many 8 behaviors, especially when it comes to being assertive, confident, and, yeah, all the negative stuff too. I tell everyone that what I most act like, and that lust and passion and all that fun crazy stuff is definitely there; however, after watching this video, I'm starting to think I might be mistyped, as I equally resonate with the 6-a surprising realization after years of thinking I’m an 8. The 6 is 1000% my mother, and my dad is a 1. Which is why I watched the video lol. I’m resonating with the 6 most from the past two years of my life but there’s other instances I’ve had growing up that might say I’ve had those tendencies longer? Perhaps just a learned trait from moving around so much. Growing up, I was seen as a control freak at home but super outgoing and friendly at school. I never understood why I seemed like two different people depending on where I was. As I got older, I noticed a shift-sometimes I craved security and struggled with self-doubt, behaviors more aligned with a 6. I wasn’t just one way at home and another in social interactions it became so interchangeable that I’ve started to feel like a walking cotnradiction. But I also wonder if this “need for stability” was just a way to avoid feeling vulnerable or weak, especially since I often felt that way after being thrown out of my comfort zone so much. Moving around a lot as a kid didn’t initially bother me, but as it kept happening, I struggled to maintain the confidence I once had. I began adapting and seeking security in new environments, because the stuff I used to do so confidently with that CRAZY 8 ego just didn’t work anymore. The outgoing and bubbly personality withered away and I craved security after many failed attempts at friendship which is why this video resonated with me. I’ve gone from avoiding vulnerability like an 8 to being more anxious and unsure, chasing after stability like a 6. Super head strong and crazy, but in these past years I lost a whole friendgroup that I was heavy reliant on to fix that fact I lacked friends, or at least good ones. I started dating a type 3 person for two and a half years now. My mom passed away and me and my boyfriend almost broke up for good multiple times. Like 4 or 5. This is the part where I don’t know if I’m an 8 anymore. (Not that it changed that maybe I mistyped myself?) everything’s about regaining stability now and who to trust. Sure I still hate feeling weak or vulnerable but I’ve cried and gotten my ass handed to me so many times (basically everytime I open up to people) that who even cares if people think I’m weak or worry about me, I just need support from someone or anyone!!! I was clingy and all that gross shit. I ESPECIALLY didn’t trust anyone either. I don’t feel that way as much anymore as I’ve done a ton of healing and me and my current boyfriend have been in a healthy relationship for almost 9 months STRAIGHT!!! and sense then I’ve felt my old self come back to the light a bit. I'm now confused about whether I'm a 6 or an 8 because I strongly identify with both, depending on the situation. Any advice would be appreciated because I'm genuinely confused as I think knowing which one is the most accurate will help me overcome some shit I’ve gone through. I feel like they’re both me just at different times of my life. Maybe it’s just a misunderstanding of the enneagram itself or JUST of myself. lol let me know what you think!! Any advice or insight is much appreciated!!

I've started delving into Enneagrams recently as I'm a fiction writer, and Enneagrams were constantly introduced to me as a tool for figuring out character development and inner conflicts (not personality types, mind you!). What I unintentionally started to do was to apply it to myself as well... Currently as an adult I'm a 9w1, but after this video I recognised that I was a 6 while growing up (I fluctuated between 6w7 and 6w5 throughout the years). It's a fun thing to realise that the Enneagram growth/integration process actually applied to my life, when I didn't even know it was a thing before this!

Before I took the test, I guessed which type I belong to based on the brief narrative of each type. I correctly guessed being type 6. I was surprised, however, that my core desire is “security”. But watching this video helped me understand myself more. I am a 6w5 and I totally agree with this. Now I know why I never strive for acknowledgment despite knowing I have the skill and the sense of responsibility ; why I do not bother climbing the corporate ladder so long as I get paid enough to live comfortably; why I am so anxious; why I can’t seem to stop thinking…

Thanks for these videos man. They're a big help! If I can I'd like to write a little of my experience as a probable 6. For most of my life I was somewhat unconcious to my own thoughts and emotions and was just doing stuff that I 'wanted' to do with little reflection. It wasn't until sometime later after analysing myself that I was so obsessed with getting other people to love me. I felt that I was an emotional prostitute, I would feel amazing if I saw happiness in another, but I couldn't feel it when I was by myself. And infact, being with myself was torturous and still is as I'm writing this. I feel like I need to gain perspective to beat the heartache and betrayal of love I've experienced. I need reassurance from my loved ones and when I am going bad I take out my anger on them. I'm terrified they'd leave me so I attack them and make them feel bad like other people made me feel bad, or worse, I abuse them because I know they won't leave me. I want to be happy and safe/secure in my emotional environment because I feel at any moment that someone could say something to me like: We're having an event and sorry we just forgot about you, You are weird/ I don't like your vibes. I always expect people I love or stranger to say these things or say I'm inadequate at loving another person. I just get annoyed because I am this way because I am afraid of you lol! IIm afraid of intimacy and what people might do to me if I drop my guard down, It takes me alot to trust someone. I'm also afraid of being powerless or becoming aomeone I hate because of the fear that I can't control my life. To prove that I have control I do some stupid, painful shit; I take drugs I shouldn't, I try to get myself into negative situations to see if I could fight my way out. I try to destroy my relationships just so I don't have to confront people about how much I think they're going to leave me. But yeah, sorry for the long one. I'm hoping to get through the whole playlist. :)

Hi there, you can try to find a practice in KZbin called how to heal your inner child. Maybe podcasts with Gabor Mate will have a good influence on you as well. And there's a song that everyone knows and many people love because of the power of its lyrics Mariah Carey's "Hero": "You can find love If you search within yourself And that emptiness you felt Will disappear And then a hero comes along With the strength to carry on And you cast your fears aside And you know you can survive So when you feel like hope is gone Look inside you and be strong And you'll finally see the truth That a hero lies in you."

Hey Kathrine! If you're leaning towards identifying as a 6, I would reflect on if there are important figures in your life (like parents, or influential authority/protective figures) that embody the traits of type 2 helpers and/or type 9 peacemakers. Type 6s often adopt the traits of those they look up to as a way being "compliant" which can make them mistype. Hope that helps!

It is a good question. As a child I think that I mostly looked up to my brother, but I do not think he is a type 2 or 9. Maybe he is a type 4 or 5. I got some good coaching around the enneagram, and we think my tritype is 926 or 927. But I was always a bit in doubt around the type 6 since I do not fit the stereotype. But I have to take a deeper look, and after this video I fell I have to look beyond the stereotype. I do still see a lot of the type 9 that fits me.

This was awesome! U explained things so well. For me, I am a type 6 but I have a very large amount of type 8 and type 1 in me as well, pretty much equal amounts as 6, so as much as I do relate to the six at the core, there are situations where I feel like the other types come out. It can make it hard to distinguish what I really am. I wish there was more videos explaining what types look like that also have high levels of another type, because I feel like that would be helpful. For instance I think that maybe counterphobic sixes have higher levels of 8 in them and it makes them feel controlled by their fear and want to retaliate against that. But I’m not an expert. Anyways, thanks again for the awesome video!

this was genuinely a slap in the face 😭 (in a good way as like a wake up call) honestly i agree that upbringings does have an effect on temperments SIGNIFICANTLY as an undiagnosed autistic kid growing up it was so hard making friends so i learned how to depend on myself but i always longed for a place to belong/security but i didnt have that at home, i was usually isolated and my parents were so busy to give that emotional need though sometimes not validating my strong emotions (but i know they always want the best for me) and i just grew up with the fear of betrayal/abandonment or being replaced along with trust issues i only have myself to rely on but at the same time i know thats an unhealthy mindset to have but it just seems like the safest option

I just discovered enneagrams and of the YT channels I've listened to so far, yours offers the better descriptions. I've heard several people (on and off YT) talk about 6's as if we're all ready to overthrow the government & live in a heightened state of paranoia. Not the best explanation when you're first trying to figure out if you are this type. 😉 So thank you for the clear and unbiased approach. I feel like I am a 6 in most ways (and I tested as a 6w7--twice & as a 4 once--I only took 3 tests), but I pull back when I listen to discussion on community. I actually shudder at the idea of communities and being a part of them. Like, eww. lol I am very much a loner who prefers a few close friends online. Oh, maybe if I relate it to online and irl, then perhaps a group of online people is cool. But when I think of "community", I think of neighbors and my town and I never want to be a part of that. lol But I definitely see myself in many, many other 6 ways--like fear & anxiety. Thanks for this video!

@@YouveGotaType Nope. Definitely not. lol I am very empathic and more on the sensitive side. I'll figure this out eventually. lol I took another test that gave me a 6, but that test said to focus on who I've always been and not who I've become, so some of my answers were skewed more toward how I felt and thought almost 30 years ago before time, experiences, and others helped alter my viewpoint. That's not to say I don't still have some of those core traits, but I've grown and matured. I'll keep searching. I wondered about 4 bc there are some similarities, but I'm not as highly individualized now as I was when young. This shouldn't be so difficult, and that statement probably shows I truly am a 6. 😝

Can you be 5w6-3-9 and highly relate to a few of these points? How to tell between having a strong wing and being that type? Will a social 5 be more similar to 6 than other 5s? I tend to have inclinations toward a lot of the things mentioned here but then don’t go through with it. i.e. think about joining the military because it’s familiar (military family) but end up not doing it because I don’t want to give up decision making abilities or cause harm. Another example is I ask for advice and wonder what others think but then I don’t follow it because it didn’t make enough sense once I evaluated it. It’s like I’m just short of being a 6. My mom is a 6 and I find her to be highly unpredictable. My childhood experience was watching reactive types (both parents) or anger/gut types react to things and feeling detached from them. My mom was highly invasive/paranoid due to religion and morality which affected me a lot - I became secretive and closed off yet I seem nice, polite, and helpful because if I was that way she would lay off and assume I wasn’t doing anything satanic. I developed OCD to avoid negative thoughts about hell. My brother was rebellious (he’s a 1) because he just couldn’t put up with perceived unfairness, whereas I adjusted my behaviors to avoid the anxiety of being invaded or having my interests criticized or taken from me. My biggest struggle in life is a reflexive avoidance of intimacy. I am sx-blind also.

Hey there! I would first of all suggest leaving behind the attempt to formulate a "tritype" as it's now known. In my experience, it becomes more of a distraction from doing the actual work of personal growth & healing, as it tends to lead people to create this self-absorbed reflection of themselves in this idealistic formula. Ok, with that said! You are clearly observant based on all the information you provided here. I'm sure there's tons more where that came from. Finding your enneagram type always comes back to your core motivations and core struggles. Sometimes this can be hard if you're feeling right on the line with your wing type (i.e 5w6 or 6w5). Social 5s tend to find a particular career in which they can become a specialist so they always have a role through which to engage the world. 6s are more dutiful and will be pulled towards careers in which they can do clear, practical tasks that serve a broader group or just pay the bills. I know this is a superficial read based on one KZbin comment, but your perspective seems far more like a 6 than a 5, and I would wager a guess that you just don't want to be a 6 because of the hard feelings you have about your mom based on what you shared. You referenced your dad, but went in on your mom moreso, which tends to be the 6s tendency as well as they usually have a softer spot for their dad even if they still think he's unhealthy/abusive etc. That's all I got! Hope it helps.

I figured i was a 6w5, but i am not sure. I have high standards for my logic process and tend to push them onto others. That sounds like a Type 1, but I don’t think I’m a Type 1 because I do worry a lot about my security, and see possible threats from a multitude of directions. But I’m not particularly afraid of lashing out at things I find stupid, that’s probably because I have a good support circle around me that is ok with my behaviour. I honestly think I should do it more often instead of just voicing my frustrations and leaving them out to dry. I don’t like when other people do that, so I think I’ll stop doing that now that I’m more aware. I value logic and reasoning very highly, even though the voice in my head is mad annoying, at least it is logical, smart, and fast, and I pride myself on that. I catch myself getting frustrated with others who don’t ride along with my 120 WPM frantic multitasking fast reflexes bonkers ass brain - which now I type it out, yikes, way to go me… something I need to work on for sure. Hell, I even feel that same frustration towards myself when I get a bit tired or my hands are too cold to type fast. Might be a 5 wing because I really don’t want to open up to people and I’m happier by myself. Then again, I do get lonely in unfamiliar circumstances. I’m still relatively young, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see. Don’t even know if I’m a type 6 or what, but at least all this talk about enneagram types has got me to look harder at why I do the things I do. Thanks for making these videos, I really appreciate your methodical approach and many disclaimers. It feels comfy. Can’t really explain why.

Thanks so much for the high praise! So glad I was able to be helpful as you explored your enneagram type. I've have heard that theory about sexual 6s having to be counterphobic, and it makes sense to a degree, but I've also met primarily phobic 6s that have a strong sexual instinct which causes them to be very coy, seductive and mysterious like Type 4s would be (a common mistype). It's important to note that 6s are not 100% phobic or counterphobic. I could have probably explained this better... but all 6s will have some areas in their life where they are phobic, and others where they are counterphobic (think of it like a sliding scale). Even the toughest soldiers may be terrified of emotional intimacy, and thus run away from it. Hope that makes sense!

In that regard I have found this podcast episode to be really helpful in understanding anxiety, what it is and how it works. So glad you enjoyed it! That’s a fascinating theory about the influence of instincts on the phobic nature. I think it makes sense to a degree, but I also know some sexual 6s that I think or phobic and they use intimacy as a way of finding a “protector.” But I don’t have much data to support that hypothesis! Thanks for teeing this up. I’ll be sure to have my radar up for phobic 6s in the future in regards to their sexual instinct.

That fits the pattern 6s not receiving the guidance they needed from the authoritative/protective figure if they were frequently absent. I interpret "overprotective" as worrying but nota actually providing structure and a sense of grounding as well, so yes, definitely first the pattern.

Oh there’s no direct correlation between instincts and counterphobic/phobic tendencies. All 6s will be counterphobic AND phobic in some areas of their life, it’s just that they’ll generally lean one direction more often than not. So for example, a predominantly counterphobic 6 could go fight in a war and still be phobic about expressing their true emotions to their partner.
