Both types can’t change. People don’t understand the MBTI but you’re right! It’s about cognitive functions and basically how our brains are wired! That does NOT change, it just develops. Like someone could look like a different type if they have not developed and become secure. I LOVE both. I didn’t understand the enneagram for A LONG time but understanding that enneagram is about your underlying motivations, your desires, etc helped. I’m an ENTP in the MBTI and a 7w8 enneagram. My MBTI helped me understand how to communicate with people effectively and understand why people perceive me as cold and callous when to my core I’m warm. But the enneagram helped me understand how my upbringing affected me and the things I have to overcome because of my upbringing. But it’s because of my cognitive functions (MBTI - ENTP) that helped me understand how crucial it was to understand my emotions (Enneagram 7w8).

Thank you for talking about this! I love how they can both be used hand-in-hand or separately based on what you're looking for--I'm an INFP who recently discovered I'm probably an Enneagram 4, not an Enneagram 9. I learned about MBTI first but as soon as I discovered people were also connecting it to Enneagram, I wanted to learn about both to see how they can fill in each other's blind spots! I love & understand learning about the cognitive functions because it helped me understand that people's psyches want to balance themselves out, so all the "faults/flaws" I was seeing in myself throughout school and my first jobs outside of art were actually tied to specific strengths, and it told me what/how I could balance my personality better to achieve the results I want. I love the Enneagram because it helped me understand why I am the way I am and what drives me to fulfill what my soul needs to live a happy lifestyle! I know much more about MBTI than I do Enneagram, and I do believe our type doesn't change--it just depends on our stage of development, how much work we've put into developing our inferior functions, and if we gain more insight about ourselves as we discover more on our personal growth journey. MBTI can also go deeper into things like grip stress and our "loop" when our psych is trying and failing to balance itself through our hidden cognitive functions (much like the Enneagram's stress number). If you use your top functions too much, they can burn out and you become forced to rely on functions that you have little to no practice using in a healthy way, causing you to seem like a different type or exhibit traits contradictory to your true nature.

I did a couple of MBTI tests a long time ago, but the results never really resonated with me, although admittedly I didn't do any further research. Whereas when I first did an enneagram test the results seemed to see straight into my soul, and the more I researched the more I felt like it knew me on a really deep level! I've been meaning to try MBTI again but it's a little intimidating to get into because there's so many types. So for now I definitely prefer the enneagram :D

I am an ENTJ on the MB and an Enneagram 3w2 SO/SP. I think that they are tools for different things. There obviously can be some overlap, but I agree that if you are talking about internal discovery and knowing yourself better, then the enneagram is more useful. This is where I'm at currently. But, I used the Myers-Briggs for years and I think it did a good job at figuring out how I interact with the world. It was more about the patterns of my choices. Now, why I made those choices was never apparent to me until I learned more about the enneagram.

INFJ 4w5. Interesting story I have about learning my MB. Back in the 90s there were no tests, so I read and assumed I was INFP but something felt off. I never even read the J section-so never thought I could be INFJ-I assumed Js were annoying, anal-retentive, etc. LOL MB is cognitive function but not much else. I have known Type 1, 9, 3, 6 and 4 who are all INFJ. Or to quote another E-gram coach, ‘If you want to know how great you are read MB. If you want to know what a jerk you are, read the E-gram.’

Personally, finding my MBTI type was way easier and instantly resonated with my life. I am an ENFP and struggling to find my enneagram type (wavering between and 4 sp or a 7). I am an INFJ 4w5. I've taken MBTI numerous times over the past 20 years and am an INFJ every time. As an Enneagram 4, my desire is to be seen and understood. I have never felt more understood than I do when reading about strengths and weaknesses of an INFJ. Ennegream also gets me, but to a lesser extent. My personality overlaps so strongly with traits from several other types that it has left me feeling like Ennegram is too generalized. I understand that there are wings, countertypes, triads, etc., but this feels like an overcomplicated way to explain that everyone can be everything depending on the situation. However, both tests are successful in the sense that they empower people to learn more about themselves and others. To each their own.

Yes...some Meyers Briggs/enneagram types don’t always seem like they can go together but this can be a combo. Here is something I came across about the INFJ Nines -They have the potential to be some of the greatest spiritual seekers of their time. Visionary, imaginative, and insightful, their strengths come naturally to INFJs. They are typically very in touch with their intuition and feeling functions - foreseeing possible conflicts, sensing emotional turmoil and pain in others, and listening with insight and understanding.

According to the theory Myers Briggs can never change, but some discuss that if a traumatic event happened that would be possible some say even there it doesn’t. I like both communities and I think people even accept the enneagram changing better than the mbti. Another thing if the mbti could change I would be changes on types with the same functions, for example if you are an ENFP (Ne, Fi, Te, Si) some agree that after a traumatic event you could turn to an infp (Fi, Ne, Si, Te) but probably never for example to an ISTP (Ti, Se, Ni, Fe) But I think most people agree that it doesn’t change

Your MBTI type cannot change. You may sometimes feel like a different type because of something similar to growth vs stress in enneagram. In socionics this is called the 4 sides of the mind theory where when you are unhealthy, you portray a different type in your subconscious or unconscious. INFP 9w1 here and I use and love both theories. Sometimes it's hard to get your hands on good info about MBTI though, especially if you are just googling a type and it can make it seem inaccurate. I find this true for enneagram too though. Socionics, or socionics paired with MBTI is really the only way to get the most out of the MBTI theory.

Before someone says it, yes, I am sure I am an INFJ. I know it's the most common mistype. I have studied the cognitive functions and I know INFJ is what I am. Is it possible to be INFJ and an 8? If so how?
@enneagramandcoaching
@enneagramandcoaching 4 жыл бұрын
Why do you think you couldn’t t be a INFJ and an 8? I was listening to a teaching from Suzanne Stabile (amazing enneagram teacher) and she said all types can be any combos of the MBTI. And the type 8w7 vs 8w9 are so different plus you add the subtypes (videos coming soon) so it could make sense that your an 8 and INFJ.

INFP 5w4 here. And this is gonna get long (it's what we, INFPs, do best lol). I understand my MBTI from the second I read the results of the online test's description. I think the MBTI is more like a gateway to all of the personalilty typing stuff. For the enneagram, in my case it's still an '"I think I'm this type" kind of situation.' Just because I think I'm one way, will not mean I'm right. So, I've been recently asking people "around" me, especially my family (whether a 5 "really" has people around them besides their family is a different story), for some kind of reference (which maybe not sound like a type 5 for sure). Which, has seemed to make my family all annoyed because of me constantly asking questions about my personality traits. Also I still can't decide because a 4w5 is more likely than a 5w4 for the INFP (same with the INTP. INFP and INTP are siblings like the 4 and 5 are). I don't really think a care about my identity that much. I mean identity is totally important, you NEED or (I should say) HAVE one but when you compare it with knowledge it's a "no" for me. Were as for Miss Universe, or should I say knowledge, you NEED it, you NEEEEED knowledge for everything, ANYTHING!!! "No matter what you are, you're you. No one can change that. So what is there to worry about? 🤷‍♀️" is how I think for identity. "Knowledge, AHHHH knowledge. The mother of everything. The winning cup for human evolution, revolution, sivilization, and much more. It's 'history.' ☺️" is what I think for knowledge. So... am I a 4 or a 5?

I think what Meyers briggs and enneagram have in common is that your type doesn't change....BUT if you take either test multiple times, then you can possibly get different results just because tests are never the golden rule. I think for both personality theories, if you are REALLY serious in knowing your type for both theories you need to take the time to read each personality type description if taking the test alone doesn't work for you. Like enneagram we all have a little bit of each 9 types in us.... Same as Meyers briggs. We all have a little bit of E, I, N, S, F, and T but it's the matter of which 4 letters you use more like if you're right handed or left handed. I can write and throw a ball with my left hand but I'm clearly better at doing those things with my right hand. I think it's easier to guess an acquaintance's myers briggs type than their enneagram because myers briggs deals with how you react to the world while enneagram is about your motivation and fears and most people wouldn't be able to guess that unless you get to know someone on a deeper level. Specialist for both theories say that you can type children but personally, I would hold off on typing my future kids until they reach high school because I'd want them to develop their personality more without any influences but tbh ill still probably secretly guess their type in my head and wait to see if I guess right many years later lol

Personally, I get why some people prefer the Enneagram over MBTI, particularly those who have a hard time figuring out their MBTI type and find the cognitive functions too confusing. But the problem I see happening is that they end up trying to use the Enneagram as the answer to everything, when certain things could be better explained by preferred functions or other things. People in the Type 9 groups do this all the time. They talk about difficulties that they as 9's have with 8's or 3's or 6's in their lives, and I immediately identify their issues as thinker vs. feeler differences, or judger vs. perceiver differences. Or they somehow think there's a connection between their Enneagram type and stuff like ADHD or anxiety or sleep disorders. Like they expect other people of their same Enneagram type to experience all the same difficulties that they experience. Okay, I better stop ranting. (I already made a video about this a while back.)

MBTI doesn't change per say. My limited understanding is MB is linear. I imagine a line and directly in the middle is zero. One side is I the other E. You will fall somewhere on that line the closer to middle you are the easier it is to have commonalities and the further away less likely. As we grow, age, mature we learn to develop our lesser skills/traits thus moving us closer to the center. My understanding is one typically doesn't cross the 0 mark without trauma. Some cam be very close to the middle. This person can be conflicted and/ or well balanced. In this specific trait.

The MBTI is supposed to change over time, even in the most popular website 16personalities.com they recommend to take the test with a minimum of 6 months of space and they record your results in chronological order. I also first knew about my MBTI type but when I got to know about the Enneagram I really felt that was the missing piece I was not getting with the other test. Like with the enneagram you get to see the roots of why you are the way you are and not only how you decide to address and react to situations. You have no idea for how long I thought there was something wrong with me as I never saw parties or social gatherings as my way to have fun, like I enjoy it but only with specific people I know very well. Also, gossiping about people or always thinking about what people think about me was another thing I never cared about as other people around me. It was until I knew about the enneagram when I understood... I was like “oh okay, there are other people like me over there” haha now I know preferring to be alone is normal and not a glitch in my brain (I’m a 5).
