Oh, and before anyone argues that the pilot gets to travel to possibly hundreds of places a year, keep in mind that they can usually only enjoy the place for like 1 or 2 days at most before heading onto their next flight while you on your vacation get to enjoy the place for 2 weeks or more usually.

True. They also don’t get paid for pre flight checks on ground or anything leading up to the flight. They are only paid for in flight hours. They are responsible for so many human lives and have to be alert and aware of so much at odd hours of the day in different time zones. It is absolutely not an easy job being a pilot.

Pilots jobs are hard people think that they sit on there asses all day. It’s usually has its ups and downs. The hardest part is definitely hitting the simulators and going through all the material you learned again. You can’t forget anything and 1/2 ass something in aviation. You have to be a meteorologist, doctor, mechanic, and a aviator. You need to understand weather, your engines and how they work, health and associate medical conditions. It’s not as easy as it looks, that’s why 40% quit there first year at a part 141. It’s just too much and they’re all yet to even scratch an actually airline.

I work for a major airline and some things of note: 1.) You are no longer required to have a college degree. If you have your hours (at least 1,500 or 750 in military service) and instrument ratings, many regionals will be willing to have you. Do a few years of that and now Major airlines will scoop you up much sooner than before. 2.) Pilots aren’t enjoying a plane that flies by itself! Even in an Airbus! There’s so much instrument watching and plan deviations you have to be aware of and on the fly. You don’t just take off and enjoy uneventful flight plans all the time. I talk to pilots. None of them say it’s easy but all of them say it’s worth it. 3.) Pilots are not overpaid! I mean, when the flight is uneventful it seems like it but when things go even slightly amiss it’s like they’re hilariously underpaid and I believe all of them deserve more.

@@westerlywinds5684that’s bullsh1t, not every job is complicated and most jobs don’t even require any certification or training/schooling, I started working construction without any knowledge and it’s a fairly straightforward job, it’s physically demanding but straightforward, working in a shop, walking behind a garbage truck, a lot of office jobs and most of the most common jobs are very simple, being a pilot however requires a LOT of training, hours upon hours of studying, being a pilot also is a fairly stressful job for a lot of what I’ve heard, you need a special kind of personality to put yourself through all that trouble mentally, physically and financially to become a pilot, once you’ve done that you fly regionals and get paid less as some easier jobs out there to just keep pushing yourself, there are quite some people that get that far just to realise they don’t like the job as much as they thought, by the time you actually start earning good money it’ll take a while to pay of all your debt, not every job is complicated without knowledge, the hardest part about most jobs is either financially, mentally or physically but when just becoming a pilot it’s not just one of those 3 but all 3. As young construction worker I have a lot of physical challenge on my job and financially it’s reasonable mentally I have no problems with this job, working in a shop you might get more mental sh1t because of entitlement with some costumers and financially it’s mostly okay, physically working is a shop is not challenging, almost none of. The most common jobs are complicated neither do they take a toll on all 3 those things at a time Never under estimate a job like pilot, there is a reason for that high pay, if you are a person with the right personality and willingness to push yourself you are a rare person and because of that rarity you are valuable to an airline

As an attorney providing legal services to airline pilots for several decades, I'll add that the average salary today adjusted for inflation is actually less than it was 20 years ago. The mandated periods of rest and flights are so disruptive that many have failed marriages. Flight schedules are such that many join together to rent apartments around the country as "crash pads" to get sleep during layovers, as a significant expense not paid by the airline. Then there is the stress of dying because some under trained mechanic in Mexico left a screwdriver in an engine which "servicing" it for the employer airline looking to get maintenance on the cheap.

The part of the video talking about “letting the technology do the flying” is a very gross oversimplification of what we actually do. We do turn on the autopilot once we are above a certain altitude and let it physically fly the aircraft, but the autopilot doesn’t do anything without us telling it what to do. We are still the ones that have to plan and fly the departure procedures and arrivals, deviate the aircraft around hazardous weather, do fuel calculations in flight, weight and balance, re-program the autopilot when we are given route changes in flight by the air traffic controllers, and manually take over the aircraft if there is some sort of system failure or abnormality. The general public thinks all we do it click on the autopilot and take a nap. But that’s not true at all. We have to turn the autopilot off if we get into turbulence that is too rough because the autopilot won’t be able to hold our heading or altitude. The purpose of the autopilot is to reduce our workload so we can focus on the other parts I mentioned. Think of autopilot just like very sophisticated cruise control on your car. I have had several occasions where the autopilot malfunctioned or wasn’t doing what we programmed it to do, so we had to disconnect it.

I'm not even a real pilot and can tell you that flying a plane is much harder that just turning on the AP. There is so much many procedures to follow, knowing how to plan a flight, being able to read charts and of course being able to manually fly the plane even with strong winds, ETC.

Pay close attention to the first officer charts because that's where you are most likely to spend most of your career. And before covid you were way more likely to end up at some no name regional sub contractor who was paying 13.00 an hour for FO's working "16 hour" days flying 8 legs a day and living out of a closet in an apartment shared with 7 other dudes doing the exact same thing.
