Well... Beauty (and value) is in the eyes of the beholder, and when collectibles are involved presentation matters a lot, especially in the secondary market. That's why knives I know I'll never sell get their boxes chucked as soon as I've checked them for defects, and knives I don't love are stored in their boxes. I started that habit when I threw out the box of a knife that turned into a collectible (Benchmade 771B prototype if anyone cares) and my untouched knife ended up being worth a fraction of a used knife with a box.

Exactly. If we want to get into "worthwhile" inclusions, let's see some extra hardware, tool if it's an unusual screw head type and of course the ubiquitous cloth. These add value. I mean I love my Civivi knives but I could definitely do without the pouch. Especially if they included some of those awesome t8 screws that still have a small enough head to work as body screws. I think Apple really started this trend in mainstream society (very high end objects for the uber wealthy have always made much ado about the packaging). But even for really spendy knives it doesn't make sense to sink money into packaging when it's likely someone already has storage arrangements, particularly for expensive kit.

Giving a nice box and packing is all about a sales tactic called "perceived value". They are definitely trying to give the buy the impression that the knife is worth more than is maybe is with flashy presentation.

I am in the military and I move a lot. I don’t keep boxes because it’s space I don’t have during PCS season. I have had people interested in a trade or sale just completely back out because of the box. Crazy that to some people that’s what’s important. The guy said… “I am a collector, without the box it has almost no value.”

I like what Strider does. I’m not so fond of pouches because of their bulk. I collect knives and have limited space. So many of the cardboard boxes are flimsy as heck. Cold Steel comes to mind. I’ve bought lots of knives over the past four years and my favorite packaging came from Tactile Knife. They come in a box made of hard material just big enough for the knife. Pretty space efficient.

100% agree. Demko is a perfect example. The box is about as cheap and flimsy as you can get, I don’t care, the knife inside quickly gets all my attention, the box gets tossed in a cabinet.

I mean I don't care that much about packaging BUT. It's nice when a maker takes the extra little time on the presentation as well. The presentation doesn't have to be fancy, it just feels better to know your $800+ knife is secure during transport and not just in a zip lock baggie thrown in a bubble wrap envelope that's getting shipped across the world in some cases. Similar to an Apple product, you will never use the packaging, but they always have great packaging and presentation. Every small detail helps with the Complete experience of getting a new expensive product. Take the $700 Hog House Knives Model-T as an example, it just comes in a nice little wooden box. Nothing fancy, just a plain small wood box with some foam in it, and that little extra step cost the maker maybe $1 extra. So for me the packaging is more about being protected during shipping since I live in Norway, so pretty much all expensive knives are being bought outside the country and I know how the postal/shipping services treat packages. And many retailers just ship in soft plastic envelopes, so I can't rely on what packaging the shop decides to use in shipping.

I appreciate nice packaging, and am more apt to keep it if it is nice, but it’s certainly not what I’m after. Typically it receives a “ohh fancy…” from me, before I set it aside in a closet. Never to gaze upon its visage until it’s time to move. It’s mainly my ocd that keeps me from getting rid of them. I have no valid excuse. 😂

Hi, MC...you make a good point, and I can certainly see your point of view. However, as a former retail jeweler, I can tell you that presentation absolutely matters. The guy who lives on ramen noodles and PB&J for six months so he can scrape up $499.95 for an engagement ring for the love of his life wants to feel as good about his purchase as the High Roller who doesn't even blink at the $10K price tag for his. That means both rings need to be delivered in a box that looks and feels expensive. Yes, both women (if they say "YES!") will put the ring on their finger and the presentation box in a drawer. Knife companies have no way to know if the piece they just sold is going to an end user or if it is going to be a gift. I just took delivery of a Civivi Mini Praxis, a very respectable knife for a measly $29.75. It came in the typical Civivi package: a clean, crisp white sealed box with a nice pouch inside. I even got the typical Civivi stickers and branded microfiber cloth just as if I had spent more than a hundred bucks for one of their products. I felt good opening it. I also feel good knowing that if I gift a Mini Praxis this Christmas to someone who is not really a knife person, they will hopefully feel special receiving it in all its packaging. Yeah, I tossed my clean, crisp white box in the recycling bin and put the never-to-be-used pouch in a drawer. But those things served their intended purpose, and that pretty much needs to happen no matter what. The custom knife maker who delivers his expensive piece of work in a Ziplock baggie ought feel more proud of his work than that. Just my two cents. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your content!

MC, you've stated this better (and more emphatically) than I could have ever done! I agree completely, though in general, I don't put much thought into the packaging, what I vehemently DON'T like, is the "blister pack" packaging that some knives (and lots of other stuff) comes in! I find that I need an Obsidian-sharp, .25" thick, robust/stout frame/Axis/Atlas/XR/compression locked, Rockwell Hardness 80 knife just to get INTO those darn things! The plastic ziplocked baggie is much preferred!

Boxes are transport vehicles, then go to the recycling bin. They're used as a bargaining chip on the secondary market, because toys in their original packaging fetch so much more money. But toys in original packaging show that they were never played with. Boxes provide no evidence of carry or cutting use. They're pointless in the knife world.

I don't care about the boxes once I receive the knife, but nice, sturdy boxes help protect the knife during shipment. This is especially important for import knives which may see dubious handling during the long journey from manufacturer to consumer. I think you glossed over this point during your 26 minute energy drink rant! 😀 I think there needs to be a happy medium between Hinderer throwing his knives in ziplock bags and Herman putting them in custom fit wooden crates.

Cold Steel packaging is designed to survive the entire container load falling off the ship, and a box washing up on shore with a greasy knife floating in bubble wrap. I don’t care much what kind of packaging the knife comes in, the big reason I keep all the boxes is in case I sell them. I’ve seen enough Pawn Stars episodes to know that the box can be VERY important when it comes to collectables resale value. If I had more money, and never planned on selling anything I would absolutely buy a nice Pelican case like you have MC, but for now, the boxes do help keep everything in good condition.

This topic left me strangely ambivalent. On the one hand, I have some wonderful boxes that my Sonos speakers came in that I’m having trouble throwing away. They just seem too nice to part with. I am now so inured to Apple packaging that when I buy a new iPhone, I can throw that in the garbage with far less reluctance. On the other hand, I haven’t been able to stop myself comparing something cheap, like Civivi, to Zero Tolerance. I don’t have a huge knife collection right now, so I appreciate the pouches that come with some of these budget offerings. I also purchased some knife pouches to house some of the knives that didn’t come with them. Ultimately, my only ask is that however the knife comes, I want it to be protected in transit, and if possible, it has something to store it in. At some point I’ll have a large enough collection where I will have a unified storage solution, and at that point I suspect I will then become of the same mind as you MC, and just not care. Ultimately, I think there is an element of familiarity and quantity impacting the feelings. If I had 20 or 30 knives moving through the home in each month, I’d be pretty unenthused on how it came, so long as it arrived intact during shipping.

For me it's a satisfaction thing of opening for example a Hinderer and slowly opening that white cardboard box and seeing all the packing peanuts and the little signed card. Well said. My full size Spartan Harsey came in just a cardboard box that has Spartan’s logo with a plastic slip over it instead of some fancy magnetic box with a foam insert to present the knife but I don’t give a damn because it’s an amazing knife and there’s the fact that I beat the hell out of my knives. Hell, my Diablo prototype showed up wrapped in newspaper inside a USPS flat rate envelope. I have a $1,600 custom folder being made right now and as long as the knife shows up in good condition I don’t care if it shows up wrapped in cotton balls and duct tape

Packaging obsession is the decline of our civilization and an insult to the knife maker. We are valuing 5 seconds of entertainment (the opening experience) over a lifetime of utility (actually using the knife). It is self indulgent, wasteful and environmentally unfriendly because (as long as the knife arrives undamaged) it’s purpose is to make the buyer “feel good.” Not from the makers effort in designing and crafting the knife, but in their decision purchase certain cardboard Packaging, not made in USA. Pretty soon we will be complaining about the unboxing experience when purchasing cars, trucks, houses and puppies. We demand that we be delighted.

It protects the knife, can be used for storage, and doesn't take up a crap ton of room and can be squished with no damage if they're just crammed into a drawer or something for later use. These boxes that take up multiples of square inches more space than the actual knife can just go away as far as I'm concerned. lol I will definitely agree a COA would be pretty cool though, especially with an expensive knife. I appreciate nice packaging, but its certainly not a deal breaker. Hell, the nicest packaging I've seen came with the original AD 20.5. That thing came with a really nice box and the nicest pouch I've ever seen come with any knife. Probably why the thing was so over priced 🤣. I think for some the packaging reflects on what the maker/manufacturer thinks of their own work. As in, "I made something really nice, so it should be presented in a way that reflects it's quality." That being said, all the boxes and pouches still end up in my box of boxes. Only to ever be dug up when I'm selling/trading or sending a knife to MC.

I want the original packaging. If the original packaging is NO packaging… no problem.

The MKM pouches with belt loops COULD be used for something. I prefer not to receive them. I'll take a plan brown box from Giantmouse with just the knife inside anyday

Honestly it kinda makes me feel better about the authenticity of the knife. If enough effort is put into the packaging. What are the chances some Chinese clone makers are going to perfectly recreate both the knife and the packaging, and the COA. Personally after I have the knife, I don't care anymore and it can go in the garbage. But it does make me feel better having the box and everything that goes with it.

I never cared about the box, I don't want the cost of my knife to go up because of the box. Knives are meant to be used, like I do care about a nice sheath if it's a fixed blade.

1:11 I’ll call out knife center for not offering a box, zipper pouch and a Velcro shark lock patch. Instead they put my ad 20.5 knife center exclusive in a cheap frosted clear plastic tooling box 3:57 !!

I agree that a long as it does the job that's all it needs to do. I do however also think if you do something interesting and worthwhile with it like that wooden box or what Ben Belkin does with the Jack Wolf knives with the integrating the thematic custom artwork and modern traditional aspect of the tube into what he has been calling functional art that I can get on board with that.

For me the issue is striders have notoriously poor fit and finish when compared to other high end American makers, are outrageously priced compared to other high end American makers AND don't come with anything resembling decent packaging.

Totally agree. Do . Not . Care about packaging. OTOH, I do appreciate it when extra hardware is provided.

I like when they don’t come with a box bc I too feel obligated to keep and they take up so much space. Ironically enough about Strider you will get more money if you keep the oem tactical bubble wrap and baggy 😅

A man should only care about one box in his life, and not the one that comes with his knife! Folks will find anything to complain about when they feel like they are spending money on things they don’t want to.
