I think most people don't think outside the box because they think that somehow the solution is magically waiting to found in the same dimension where the problem is presented, when in fact actually thinking outside the box is about understanding that certain solutions are not possible unless you change the dimension in which you are operating. Thinking outside the box is about changing how we think when we are thinking. It's about maintaining a balance between truly understanding what the limitations are while seeking what is possible without falling into fantastical abstractions away from reality.
@IsaacC20
@IsaacC20 11 ай бұрын
"Thinking outside the box is about changing how we think when we are thinking" That's an excellent explanation, one of my fave. I would like to add that "thinking outside the box" (creative thinking) can be an experience. It usually begins with a problem: a question that a person's curiosity drove to ask, or a problem that a person had never seen before (revealing person's mental blindspot). That person will try to solve the problem and usually they fail. If the problem has been solved before, the act of looking for and understanding someone else's solution, and seeing how the "old" way of thinking led them to be stuck - almost emulates the change in thinking that the problem solver underwent. Thinking outside the box requires a set of skills: the ability to analyze/observe/scrutinize details that may have been overlooked or question hidden assumptions that lead one to "remain inside the dimension where the problem is presented". It also requires inventiveness, both the resourcefulness to build off of existing well understood ideas and the pioneering spirit to pursue an idea that has never been tried/scrutinized by the community.
@princezuko7073
@princezuko7073 10 ай бұрын
@@IsaacC20 So basically Thinking out of the box or Creativity are never intentional or deliberate. When you are immersed in something these are the outcomes. They come on their own. My view is - Do something with utmost sincerity (lovingly); for long time and uninterrupted. Reflect more, read less. You will start seeing different plausible solutions (and most likely as @chrisalex001 said, from other dimensions.
@ryuzackie6180

For me thinking outside the box, first, you have to know the box is, then you will find another box that bigger and you never or cant go outside that box, that is the rule of the game, and then you will find another small box that you have to protect no matter what, that is the problem you have to solve, so, you can do everything to the small box and get it done without getting out the bigger box. Thats the game.

Thats's true, but I think this is kinda generic knowledge that is not very insightful. Obviously you have to talk to people to find out what their problems and pain points are. Thats not really new for me. Personally, I found the video contained much talking but little information that was new and exciting. Also, I think the title is misplaced, since I did not really learn much either about how to think creatively... But I'd love to hear your opinion on this! Let's interact :D

For the most part yes, I don’t think he covered “how”. But to see value in the video, maybe view it from a different lens. Lens 1: i am an young entrepreneur who wants to make a business that makes me the most money in the least amount of time and I only care about how much I can scale it Lens 2: I am a person passionate about education and I wish for a better future where instead of commoditising free education, there was a way to patreon education to be even more effective and impactful Lens 3: A service based business who doesn’t care about the consumers of their product only that they consume Viewing it from a different lens might help you understand that those who are trying to solve problems need a bit of motivation to encourage them along the way. This is to give them some hope that they are getting through solving it.

What an excellent approach to education! Where I live the education system is based on memorizing things, close the book and ask them to explain what they have just learned, ask them to connect with another subject or create some new idea out of that information and they literally can't. It's like people developed a fear to think. Everyone just focused on passing the exams. We need more people like him to make an awareness everywhere in the world.
@ChandaKalizinje

Your summary is the status quo of almost every existing education system apart from the one presented here-memorize, sit an exam and get a certificate. I have found that if you expose yourself to a new field other than the one you're familiar to, you'll may actually have a great idea combining the two.

That's true! When I was in university of science my best mark was at math. Not because I was excellent but because since the beginning of the semester I spent from 10min to 30 min every single day solving problems. When the final exams came (even I was going through a breakup) I got on the exam the best mark of 3 years of university of all subjects ! I learned that Consistency is the key and that good results come only if you spend hours of work and dedication to your craft. Pretty much like anything in Life.🙏

Major takeaways for me, also an educator and mother: 1. Equipping and empowering people to take off as soon as possible on their own (critical thinking). 2. Truly immersing oneself in “other” types of lives (empathy). 3. Focusing on being thoughtful and employing one’s artistry and academia more in the bigger picture (mindfulness). 4. Allowing for truly thinking outside of the box; on and off the page, see first example in video (mindset.) 5. Going into various disciplines, and using the juncture to improve on all sides; drama example for math teacher (authenticity). This video actually is a sort of rundown on a lot of terms we’ve been scrambling over the last 10 years, but put into context they are just more approachable. Thank you, I think this can really help a lot of people fill the slogans they encounter on a daily basis with real life! And meaning!

New Role of Education (00:01-00:20): Po-Shen Loh highlights that today's education requires students to develop problem-solving and independent thinking skills, rather than just focusing on completing homework and exams, in preparation for a world shaped by AI and automation. Thinking Outside the Box (00:45-01:15): Using the example of creating four triangles with six matchsticks, Loh demonstrates the importance of innovative thinking, encouraging students to approach problems from unique perspectives, beyond traditional methods. Challenges in Education (02:23-02:55): Loh criticizes the test preparation industry, emphasizing that it leads to excessive cramming and discourages creativity. He argues that true education should foster mental flexibility and innovative thinking, not rote memorization. Entrepreneurial Approach to Teaching (03:16-06:22): Loh discusses his efforts to create a scalable, win-win educational ecosystem that leverages expert coaches, interactive experiences, and unconventional subjects like improvisational comedy to teach students creative thinking and problem-solving. AI and Future Opportunities (14:07-14:26): Loh emphasizes that in the age of AI, creativity and value creation will be crucial. He advocates for everyone to embrace entrepreneurship or intrapreneurship to innovate within organizations and drive societal progress.

Congrats on the video. I really like the way you have explained the importance of creating value for people. It is clear that you have the mindset of an entrepreneur. About math in general there are a lot of people that know how to solve complex problems yet don’t know how to explain or make others understand the logic behind the solution. A lot of people memorize but are not good in solving simple problems

I respect you and your work. I had been thinking a lot how to cultivate the habit of thinking in young minds having learnt a lot in my own life - that I got this video. I think you have made the best effort in United States… Kudos to your work and journey. I am starting this journey in India applying some of the principles of my graduate studies at UT, Austin. I am happy to find this video and get ideas over the journey of a person having similar mission as mine. Thanks a lot for sharing.

I ranked 21st in a national maths contest I took part in during my school years - I must say that this is more of a cognitive ability than something ine can teach!

"Money can't buy happiness, but it can create impact and influence" - Very true. But it's also a double-edged sword, influence can be negative and impact may not necessarily be good for the public. Only a truly democratic country, with robust checks and balances of power, can keep those who are handling the nation's wealth honest, and for the good of society.
