This video almost moved me into tears. I, as a kid, grew up in Shanghai and lived by a heavily polluted river. The river looked dark and the banks were filled with trash and were infested with rats. Unfortunately, the river was no different from others. Almost all waters in Shanghai smelled, looked dead like sewages and unapproachable. One of my biggest dream back then was to see fishes in these rivers one day in my life time. It was definitely not a small undertaking but a world of changes happened over the few decades and I saw people start to try their fishing poles again the last time I visited my childhood neighborhood in 2014. It's so delighting to see the same happened to Chengdu as well. This video reminds me of what we grew out from and how much we should cherish what we have now. You are the best, Katherine!
@@hacken1983 Are you talking about Suzhou River? It used to be black and full of bad odor. It’s been cleaned up. My friend lives next to it. When I was in junior high school, I lived near a sewage river, so that every day after school, I held my breath and rode at a very fast speed. When summer came, the residents around did not dare to open the windows. Even so, I still like Dahe. Three years ago, with hesitation, I went to inspect the house 20 kilometers away from the city center. When the car drove over the big river near the real estate, I was stunned by the scenery in front of me. It was a super wide river called Duliujian River. I think you might have passed there by cycling in Tianjin. There are even some birds in the middle of the river that feed in the reeds and shallows. The water vapor and breeze after the rain are refreshing. At that time, I decided to buy a house here.

I witnessed the whole project back in 1992 when I was at elementary school age. It was such a spectacular thing to watch excavators edging. Soon after the project completion, there were inflated dams and locks along the river, and tourist boats, not any more though. I cycled along one of the tributaries to and from school during middle and high school age. My parents now live in an apartment by the river near Xibei bridge 西北桥 with a river view. I wish COVID could end soon and my mother country eases the COVID quarantine policies so that I could visit them soon. Last time I went back to Chengdu was 2020 Chinese new year. EXCELLENT EPISODE!!! You think this happens magically without the political will to implement it... wow just wow. Greta had to be like that because nobody listened, the little kid from Chengdu in the late 80's was lucky enough that the mayor listened and didn't kick up a stink that they were being disrespectful to their elders.

@@ANTSEMUT1 I didn't mean to offend that girl, I just wanted to emphasize that we can't just talk the talk, we need to walk the walk too. As for what's happening in China, I don't think you understand, so just don't pretend to be.

I really don't want to argue under Kat's video, but what Greta is doing is "political activism". She managed to attract attention to the issue and rallied young people. Btw the previous user said nothing about China. In fact, he/she was talking about how the local government did it right. Telling people to shut up just isn't a good way of communicating.

There is nothing wrong with being political and speak out loud, especially when the young generation is the victim of the policies today. The river has a lots of education information on bulletin board for adult or on stone. The latter one is actually right height for kids to read. The education effort has been very sustainable and glad to see the upgraded version nowadays. I was shocked when coming to US and realized how little education effort going into education.
