Speaking from the standpoint of litigation, The two biggest problems with jail nursing staff is that 1. they often unwittingly exceed scope of practice and violate practice regulations / board rules / laws etc. because there is no MD physically present on permises when the law requires it. (The RN cant practice medicine and what constitutes practice will look to whether or not there is immediate medical supervision.) Remember, RNs, LPNs, etc. generally can not practice solo without being considered to be unlawfully practicing medicine. 2. The safety and security of the institution is a secondary clause to the standard of care in that the standard of care doesnt ever change regardless of the circumstances. Be particularly observant of your FDA drug monographs because they represent the official position of the US government which is subject to cheveron defferance - meaning the federal courts expect you to follow the FDA monograph.

You don’t understand the idea of standing orders huh because even in the hospital the doctors GO HOME they aren’t physically there

@@Jaycarbrownie12correct! In prisons I’ve worked there’s protocols/standing orders. I loved this as it helped address all aspects of the condition the patient c/o or presented

Thank you guys for sharing your knowledge! I'm starting Correctional nurse in two weeks for LA county jail!. I have 6 months messurge experience but got burnt out so quickly I am venturing off to another area! I'm excited and nervous as well, especially being a woman.

I want to see more on this topic I feel like it's a VERY interesting subject filled with lots of good stories, one thing I would say is when you talk keep in mind your doing this for an audience and not as a conversation between 4 people "in the know" alot of your lingo and such went over my head if you could pause and explain an abbreviation when your talking and say what it means then continue that would be my peice of advice, just remember your audience needs to know All the little details that we weren't trained on like you but other then that great first podcast!!

I am thinking of trying jail nursing though I have some questions. How difficult are the med passes. I tried LTC nursing and found it difficult to identify patients as they did not wear wrist bands like they do in the hospital. This made passing meds take a long time until I got to know who was who. What identifiers do inmates have when passing meds? What mechanisms are in place to ensure safe med passing?
@cccook48263 ай бұрын
Hi @jana8030 inmates/patients should have their ID on them and often are verified by their “number” or whatever your facility uses. Where I’ve worked (prison) the EMR has a picture of the patient once they gave me their ID number. The jail where I was a clinical nurse educator they had band with their ID number. HTH
