Characters like Jasmine or Tiana have a strong cultural background and are human so they wouldnt have a white actress. I believe Halle is super talented and earned the role. As someone who grew up in the little mermaid it is great to see a woman of color portray her for all the little girls our there.

It was funny watching him struggle w the idea that she could actually just be the best fit for the role. This reveals internalized biases (which I’d argue we all have btw) that are so innate and naturally occurring that we can’t just sit back and wait for them to naturally fix themselves. Racism/antiblack biases which manifest themselves in occupations such as acting didn’t occur naturally so why would we expect them to go away naturally? …5 miles in 5 miles out.

The little mermaid is based in the Caribbean hence sebastians accent it was just made at a time where black people were not included in the idea of diversity unless depicted as slaves or mammies. The story is from an old european story in which mermaids were ugly non human creatures anyway. They picked the actress because she was the best in this case regardless of race. The other examples of Aladdin and The Jungle book are poor because the characters were made to have slightly americanised feautures on purpose and NOBODY was offended. Go back and watch Aladdin. His character is based off of a young Tom Cruise (ask google if you don’t believe me) and all the “good guys” have american accents while the “bad guys” have bad arabic accents and stereotypical middle eastern features. People are mad because she is black as this is not the first time in cartoon history that a character has changed race… just the first time they changed it to black

The historical relevance of this depiction of The Little Mermaid is astronomical. For decades white actors have played black, brown and Asian roles in both black and yellow face and have garnered awards and accolades for their artistry but then in turn are in uproar when a black woman plays a Mermaid. 1- Mermaids are fictional so it shouldn't matter her skin colour, 2- if the other sea creatures around her have caribbean accents they why not make her black, 3- I believe that because you guys have a male perspective where the characters hold no relevance to you that's why your opinion is that it should stay a white character. The mental, emotional impact this has on not only the new generation but for those of us who've longed for representation when it has been lacking from pop culture in general even though we created the culture find it inspirational and aspirational. For those of us that have grown up being taught that the white princess is the ideal woman and the highest standard of a woman, it is refreshing, groundbreaking and uplifting to view another Disney Princess with Black skin, can sing her socks (fins) off and can also have natural red hair. It shows that we are also ethereal, we are also the definition of beauty in all of our majestic shades was come in.

It's just now more safer for them to be themselves, and to be represented in modern day media is amazing. 1) Ariel is a mermaid. She could literally have any background/skin color. 2) If 2 women cannot kiss in a romantic context in media, than why have we always used heterosexual romance/kissing in media? Isn't that, like they said, "forcing it" too? At the end of the day, representation matters.

yea i love yall but you missed the bar when it came to the little mermaid, Halle was simply the best option. The director saw her perform and made her audition to give her the part because her voice was perfect for the role. Ariel is a fish, if Halle’s voice was the best fit, ariel just gon have to be black 🤷🏾♀️ dont be so quick to discredit an actress because of “wanting diversity”. especially as black people, we must do research

I legit have no issue with Halle being Ariel - she seems proper talented I’m ngl - The whole argument as to why you can’t have different ethnicity in previously ‘white’ (cartoon mermaid btw😂) is BS BUT Just because “Disney said that wasn’t the reason” don’t mean shit honestly 😅… maybe it’s true and she’s the most talented Honestly it’s all good but to believe it cos of what the studio or director said is so naive - they are not casting based solely on “she sounded the best” at all 100% like imagine there was a thicc girl, big, nice shapely figure - or any typa plus who could have nailed it ? Ain’t no way they’re casting a gal like that as Ariel - no shot 😂 even though they could be sexy af & have a voice that is bangin, fact is Ariel gonna be skinny. So I’m not buying that but not saying they cast her just to be diverse either and I think she’s gon nail that part after seeing bits about her so fair play to her & the people who got big issues with this sort of thing need to fix up Fr I saw someone on twitter moaning about Oliver Twist adaptation where Oliver being played as a light skinned young lad… know what it was? A 🤬ing AUDIOBOOK I can’t with it honestly

At first I was about to be upset about the Ariel but James has a point. As happy as I am that Halle earned that role for her voice, directors can just start making original black movies. Love the push for diversity but we can have our own movies too. The sad part is, we’re always gonna get people who say “this FICTIONAL character can’t be black because xyz” but at least we’d get our own original characters

How is a fictional character blatantly white? I admire Fuhads maturity in his perspective on this one. The jungle book and Aladdin examples make sense given the context provided

Cinderella was originally white in the animated version and there's been so many renditions of it as live action. But you can't tell me the Brandi and Whitney Houston version wasn't the best one out of them all. 🙄 Disney has sucked when it comes to recreating the princess movies as live action but I think the Little Mermaid will do well because they took the time to cast people based on talent not looks.

To be fair, there are Cinderella stories across the world and the story, Ye Xian, is thought to originate in China, or in the Far East. (I have yet to see this represented though), and that is why, that and the times, there may have been less of a furore. Mermaids also exist globally in cultures. They're mythical creatures so anyone should be able to play the role. Only racist people would object to the idea of a black mermaid.

One day on the way to church my little brother (7years old) said to my mother “Mommy let us take the short cut to church”. My mom asked “what shortcut?” And he told her “the shortcut down that yard which daddy takes me all the time to see the woman name sherene”….😂😂 That’s the day my mom found out that her husband was cheating for months with shortcut lady “sherene” 🤣

The Little Mermaid thing has been spoken about a lot, but I like your take on it. Why not make more original movies/shows with diversity rather than remaking an old movie/show and forcing the diversity where maybe it isn't necessary. Also this comment is coming from someone mixed race, so I don't hate the idea of her being black by any means, but Disney has been doing this a lot when it comes to everything in their portfolio, marvel, remakes, all that. There's obviously nothing wrong with diversity, but I hate that it's being forced as opposed to naturally incorporated. Hoping that comes off correctly. Also I'm a big fan of the show look forward to every Monday morning during work listening to you guys. Keep it up!

11:02 I really appreciate how these absolute MEN not only didn’t try to justify the boys actions- but they didn’t even HINT at it being the woman’s fault. No “what if she’s lying”, “these guys are famous so these girls are chasing bags”, “they should know what happens when you go after these famous people”. The only thing that even got close to the idea of women being the issue- was James saying that there is a cycle (14:51 - 15:18) is self perpetuating because of everyone misses the red flags. And ultimately- it’s the criminals fault for the injustice, not the victims. Thank you Fuhad and James for having this conversation and supporting women in the process. These are the men that boys need to view as a role model!❤❤❤
