Tried that exact method on a mates VN steering wheel 1996. Crushed the collapsible pins in the lower column and had to put a brand new one in.

Do not remove your steering wheel in the way shown (talking from experience here), did that back in the 80's on a HT 3 speed column shift and collapsed the column which is not in itself a problem, the problem was collapsing the "tree speed" selector column. Do this method at your own risk!!

Keep these doors on just make an aluminum panel to cover the inner door. Slap some clear on it and kick arse

the only problem with hitting the inner shaft of the steering column like that is it can collapse the steering column if hit too hard.
