I began intermittent fasting about 40 years ago. I was an electronic engineer and like everyone else in the department at about 11 am I got peckish and a slight tremor to my hands. I noticed that on mornings when I was in a rush and didn't have a breakfast (usually cereal) I didn't get the tremor or the peckishness. So I stopped having breakfast and never had this problem again. I recently discovered this is called intermittent fasting and this has also led me to go keto/carnivore.

In order to get my life back, I pushed away the plate. I fasted for 48 hrs every other week and gave my organs the break they so desperately needed. I usually dont eat for 18 or more hours each day. 186 lbs. DOWN And currently carnivore (meat, eggs, little cheese).. I got my life back! I just finished my first 48 hr fast since hoing carnivore. I start to get a little “peckish” after 20 hours and I get anxious about doing something stupid. That’s been the case with so many of my efforts. So I allow myself to have a boiled egg or a piece of cheese, a slice of leftover chicken and then I’m calmed down again and I can make it till evening time when I have my dinner. I’ve only been doing this for 7 weeks. I’ve lost over 20 pounds, my blood sugar is coming down, I feel great! I’m just not sure I can go a full 24 or 36 hours without eating. Why risk it when I’m already doing so well? Bottom line is I don’t really like being hungry. I know my ancestors had to do it but I am doing the best I can. ❤

After eating the SAD, hunger becomes a trigger; so worry about being hungry becomes overwhelming when considering "fasting". But eating protein and fat creates an easy fasting, automatic fasting state. If you eat just when you are hungry, and to satiety, you will not overeat.

Hey doc there are few exceptions to prolong water fasting beyond 72hrs worth mentioning. It speeds up insulin sensitivity, lowers inflammation, and cancer. I am also not a fan of dry fasting either as we do require electrolytes for nerve signaling, muscle function, and blood pressure regulation among many ither reasons. But several days of dry fasting is fine for those who are use to doing it. With fat beta oxidation as well as gluco neogenesis the byproducts are water and carbon dioxide

The drinking of beverages is prohibited from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan. It's not just food. I find that there are two aspects of this spiritual practice that are suboptimal as a dietary practice, there is no biological benefit to dry fasting versus a water fast that I am aware of, and eating two meals right before you go to sleep and again right before sunrise means that you are going to bed on a full stomach and you are going to be chronically sleep deprived. It usually happens when starting keto, you smell "fruity" from the acetone the body is producing. But later, when the body gets more fat adapted that tends to go away. Curious to know what the differences are between you and Dr. Fungs opinions are. His books were my first intro to keto and fasting.

I think that Dr Cywes is similar to Dr Phinney who are very concerned with muscle loss in extended fasts. They both agree that up to 48 hr fasts are ok (as long as there's proper refeeding in between), but longer than that it can be dangerous except for very specialized situations like fasting during chemo treatments to maximize their efficacy. Dr Phinney is also concerned with a reduced metabolic rate for those that fast too often. I've done 3 days a week alternate day fasting and it has worked well. Sometimes I do the modified version that allows up to 500 calories a day in the "fasting" day

I think all depends on context. Dr Fung talks usually about therapy for metabolically sick people. Once you regain your health it would be better to do 1-2x 36hr fasts per week instead of 5+ days periods without food.

Dr. Fung talks about longer extended fasts, like 5 days or more, but it's more when he's discussing fasting in theory and science. In practical application, the company he set up with Megan Ramos, called The Fasting Method, mainly recommends regular 36-48 hour fasts for therapeutic purposes. Some examples are three 36 or 42-hour fasts or two 48-hour fasts per week with 2-3 meals on eating days. They don't recommend really long fasts, although they do provide some info on them to keep people safe, like info on how to break those fasts to avoid things like refeeding syndrome.

I've been doing low carb/carnivore, not keto for 3 months and have lost 25 lbs and yesterday I had labs and my A1C was 4.9 but for some reason my urine showed I had a level of 80 mg/dL for ketones. Is this bad? Am I doing something wrong?

I've done dirty keto for a few years and carnivore for 5 months and I still can't get into ketosis. I regularly fast 16 - 24 hours for a minimum of 9 months and still no ketones, no weight loss. I've gained and lost the same 6 pounds over and over. I need to know how to get into ketosis. I have a blood monitor to see my ketone levels. It is .2 or .3 which is not in ketosis. Maybe I should take ketones. Help please.

Skeletal muscle isn’t the only source of protein in the body, plus, doesn’t the body recycle or break down junk proteins before finding good protein to convert into glucose? HGH goes up on extended fasts (peaks around 72H, I believe), which helps preserve skeletal muscle. I’m not convinced extended fasts for obese people isn’t a good idea.

I did a 10 day water fast. No bother!!! But you MUST be fat adapted first!! Drink sugar free electrolytes if you have low blood pressure like me. It is great! I could have kept going but I was getting nervous so I ate. I immediately got diarrhoea but I think that was the shock of eating a full meal.

As Dr. Mindy Pelz explains, your intestinal stem cells are rebuild after a 24 hours fast. It is normal to get diarrhea afterwards. I get it too.

He never answered the question is it safe to break a prolonged fast with meat??? I have the same question
@sandrasatterfield443211 ай бұрын
I would not do meat to break a fast.....a few boiled eggs would do. You've given your digestive system a break....why shock it by giving it meat right off the bat.

The main problem with any discussion of prolonged fasting is that there does not appear to have been any clinical trials to prove any of the many theories out there on the effects on the body, metabolism, the brain, etc. Every pro-fasting doctor on KZbin has case studies and theories based on their understanding of endocrinology and metabolism, but none of them can back up their claims with published studies from peer-reviewed journals. What is needed is a randomized clinical trial (in fact, multiple trials) with a fasted group compared to a control (whatever that might be) group and a measurement of the effects of the prolonged fasting on different biomarkers. Perhaps it would included multiple groups fasting for different lengths of time or consuming different levels of calories from 0 to X. Absent hard data, all of these videos on fasting from all of these doctors are just anecdotal and theoretical, regardless of the qualifications of the presenter. Please don't make major decisions about your health based on a couple of KZbin videos with no study references or data to back them up. Then, please don't make health decisions even with the studies to back them up without consulting with a health and nutrition professional that understands the science and your own personal requirements.
