Thank you for putting out these informative videos. Last year at this time I was suffering from GERD, was cycling 100 miles/week and following the "DASH" diet and was getting fatter by the day (57yo 5'11" height weighing in at 19 stone) On a routine physical my PA recommended an abdominal ultrasound (based on a biliruben of 1.8 and wanting to R/O gallblader issues) Much to my screaming chagrin I was told I had fatty liver. She was almost nonchalant with the conversation. She said nothing else in your bloodwork concerns me (ALT and AST were middle to low normal) and she was "happy" with how low my cholesterol was ldl 162 and HDL of only 33, Triglicerides were "only" 133 (A ratio slightly >4) I asked her what I needed to do to halt the progression or try to reverse the condition, and she said weight loss is the only way to do it. When she said "Just move more and eat less" I called "BULLSHIT!!" I handed her my food diary complete with the weights of my food x calories per unit weight and was at 1200 kcal/day and 100mi/wk cycling. I immediately came across a video from Dr Lustig and bought Metabolical which was life changing as I had to "unlearn" a lot of bad information in biochem. Dr Lustin cited research about fructose acting on the nucleus accumbans more aggressively than cocaine. I immediately gave up sugar, carbs and processed foods and saw a clinical psychologist to learn better coping mechanisms to cope with my emotional issues. In the first week GERD resolved and my joint pain resolved (10# water loss in 1 week is not enough mechanical relief to explain 90% resolution of pain so it had to be decreased inflammation) 1 year later, my fibroscan shows 0 fatty liver 0 fibrosis and the last 6 month weight has stabilized between 175-185#, I'm only cycling 40-50 miles/wk but doing more resistance training (manual resistance with my patients or demonstrating all the exercises to the patients in my clinic) I also found a nutririonist who doesn't say that exogenous glucose is needed for survival. I now consult annually with the endocrinologist (worked under Dr Lustig) that she works for. You, Dr Lustig, Dr Ken Berry and Dr Jason Fung are a real blessing.
@GrumpyOldFotodude5 ай бұрын
Oh, as a side note. My PA and my MD have both read their copies of "Metabolical" I gave them for x-mas. They were both shocked on my follow-up visits as to the resolution of my issues and have started to order fasting insulin (mine was 5 as of last month) and are paying more attention to Tg/hdl ratios and are referring more of our DM2 patients to our local endocrinologist.

When you start to eat less the body recognizes this and holds on to weight by slowing down the metabolic rate. Eating less will never work. Replacing carbs with fats for your energy source will increase thermogenesis and increase your BMR resulting in easy weight control. Thanks to Dr. Cywes, my triglycerides fell from 134 to 34. My HDL rose from a low of 33 to 66. What did my doctor focus on? My 139 LDL. I told him that it was perfectly fine. He couldn’t understand but I didn’t want to beat a dead horse so I changed doctors and never bring it up again.

I tried full carnivore but unfortunately I developed horrendous diarrhoea which is a long standing problem and also put on weight with it. I thought the high fat content was the problem so I reverted back to keto. It has been a long time identifying what my problem was by elimination. I found out I'm intolerant to all nuts and most vegetables. A salad for me has to be lettuce and avocado nothing else. My bowel has settled beautifully and the past month has been fantastic. Interestingly by eliminating the toxic vegetables I am tolerating higher fat content with no ill effects. By switching back to keto I am no longer ravenously hungry so can get back to intermittent fasting. Carnivore purists may not agree but I find 90% carnivore works for my body.

The d mannos stops the ecoli adhering to the urinary tract and latching on. And just drink things like oregano tea herbal antibacterial teas. Great to see you addressing the LPS/endotoxin! This is why I still respect Ray Peat and have gone back to his writings and ideas b/c he highlighted the endotoxin as a major factor driving a lot of what ails us (certainly gut issues) decades ago. I know he is not popular among the carnivore crowd b/c of his pro sugar status, however his ideas for reducing endotoxin, along with a modified 'carnivore' diet, have given me the most relief thus far. I think there is a lot of overlap between the 2 - except for the sugar/fat philosophy perhaps. The so called resistant starches, that modern medicine has encouraged are the worst thing - they encourage endotoxin. Carnivore eliminates those. However, I find too much meat at once will also flare things up for me. If someone like me, has a good metabolism (i.e I've been 105 lbs at 5'5" for decades) , I am better off eating simple sugars, they are absorbed quickly. I agree, SIBO is hogwash, as is the whole probiotic business, and eating more bacteria - i.e fermented food. (unless one grew up in a culture that ate that way). Last thing I want to do is introduce more bacteria into my gut - particularly factory produced. I 've done the really good yogurt, sauerkraut, etc. etc. and it only made things worse for me. Cheese helps. I think maybe everyone is different. Plants that grow above ground (exposed to bacteria) , esp leaves, are the worst as you said. I eat very boiled potatoes - to break down starch and raw carrot salad and coconut oil. I'm still a work in progress - I just want to feel good and heal my gut, not support anyone's dogma. I guess the bioenergetic approach makes the most sense for me - which is similar to what Paul Saladino seems to be doing. For me, the goal of trying to minimize endotoxin/LPS exposure as much as possible seems to be what helps me feel best. I think the exogenous ketones as a strategy also looks like it could be helpful.. would be interesting to try. Might be why the MCT oil is helpful. Georgi Dinkov is an excellent resource re: LPS/endotoxin from a Ray Peat perspective. he would be an interesting interview. I have found people like him, from IT/engineering backgrounds are often the best sources of info!

@@YeshuaKingMessiahAbsolutely, and that is the reason why I went into some detail. It makes sense that if one is IR and/or has a lot of weight to lose that very low or no carb and/or higher fat would be the way to go. I honestly wanted it to work for me - I was so excited about all the people resolving their gut issues, and getting energy with that approach. One of the reasons my weight has been lower is b/c of the GI issues. I don't have all the answers, but neither does the mainstream medical world so I just keep on trying b/c I guess there is no other choice, right?

@mj6255 ай бұрын
@m.b.593 apple cider vinegar is acidic and can damage teeth enamel over time. You can neutralize the acidity by adding a little baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), or potassium bicarbonate. Personally, I don't want the extra sodium in my diet, so I use potassium bicarbonate. With either one, you add 1/4 teaspoon per 1 tablespoon of ACV to neutralize the acid. You can then drink the ACV straight or dilute it with water to your desired taste. Not only will this help with things like H Pylori, but it's great for overall health.

However, I do believe I will them a try more regularly. While my diet is, regardless of the level of carbs, predominantly animal based, I do enjoy salads and fruits, especially during the summer. I'm carnivore 6 years ago but I was having a bad relapse on carbs and ultra processed rubbish when I went to the Amazon river and caught a nasty bug swimming in a small river around there. Couldn't eat for days, my gut didn't resist any food but I had no more diarrhea after the first discharge after every meal trial. The best thing I did resist was red meat soup but I did try bread as Dr said it slows down my gut transit. I was desperate so I did. I was just bloated and in pain all the time. The doctor gave me something to paralyse my gut and reduce bloating and that was all. A couple of weeks later returning to the UK I tried to return to pure carnivore slowly as I was in a carbs and ultra processed rubbish relapse... When I finally was able to return to carnivore I had a bad time with fat... But I kept trying! Best thing I did! Now 3 months later I am resisting even curry (which is not carnivore) but it's a surprise as I was so sensitive before to everything in food. Unfortunately I didn't get tests to confirm the specific bug infection but this episode looks like an answer to me. Thanks ❤

I have skin-related autoimmune diseases related to the food I eat. I did a stool test and I was found to have an almost non-existent mucosal barrier in my gut. It's called 'secretory IgA', and is the main defense barrier between what goes on inside the gut and the gut wall. People talk about how plant foods are the problem, but I believe that when someone's secretory IgA is low, the body can become sensitized to absolutely anything. For example, I cannot have any form of cow dairy without extreme autoimmune reactions. That's not a plant food, and is allowed on the ketogenic diet. I cannot eat beef without having my stomach lining cramping in pain. Again, allowed on the ketogenic diet. Meanwhile, I can eat broccoli with no detrimental effect whatsoever. Yes, some plant foods are triggers for me but others pose no issue whatsoever. There is a reason why all the blue zones in the world have omnivorous diets. There is no people-group historically on the planet that eats or has eaten strictly carnivore or keto. The fact is that people nowadays are walking around malnourished and stressed out - two things that wreak havoc on their secretory IgA mucosal barrier that protects the gut wall and keeps the toxins out of the body. People also included fresh herbs and spices in their meals with known antimicrobial effects. Oregano and clove are two potent antimicrobials that people have traditionally added to their foods to aid in reducing the chances of bacterial infection from foods. I have done steps to improve my gut lining (sleep, de-stress techniques, vitamins/minerals), and I am reacting to foods less. I think secretory IgA should be the number one thing tested for regarding any kind of autoimmunity or gut issue.

Wonder if you have any thoughts on this.. I've had a very high HDL now 118, which I've always thought was good. My primar physician thinks it is too high, but he doesn't understand why. I'm in good health, lean; except that I suffer from severe IBS, pain, general fatigue, headaches. just feeling crappy enough to affect my life, but not killing me. Best explanation to me is chronic endotoxin/LPS. Looking back, I have always had a high HDL, but these very high well over 100 numbers climbed as I developed these problems. I just heard Georgi Dinkov discuss a study that showed a correlation between very elevated HDL and high levels of endotoxin and was wondering if you've noticed or looked into. I haven't had time to look into it yet, but plan to. I guess it would support that I am on the right track. Please, Allow me to ask a couple of question about the Carnivore diet: (Sorry if i already posted before but i dont know what to do) I am now over 180 days into a Strick Carnivore diet (I only eat meat and eggs. Nothing else but 500-600g of COCKED meat plus 7-8 eggs in a day. All Divided in 2 meals) I am now 35 years old, 181cms tall, 180lbs(+-81,5kg) at +-22%BF. I go to the gym 2-3 times a week.(lift weigths to help sustain or increase muscle mass and assist fat loss- HIT Workouts) I started the Carnivore diet to improve my body composition. I was a HEALHTY guy with NO chronic illnesses or health problems. I lost about 17 lbs(8kg) in the first 9 weeks (Mostly water) but since then I haven't been able to change my body composition. I have now gone more than 8 weeks without registering any body changes (weight loss, decrease in BF% or measurements like waist, legs, arms and neck ).In fact i have gained 2,5 lbs(1KG between weeks 10-12, but it might be just water. I still need to lose at least another 15lbs of fat to reach my goal of being below 15%BF. However, I don't see how the Carnivora Diet will facilitate this process. I have not experienced most of the benefits common to Carnivores (Improved sleep, more energy/disposition, etc.) nor have I changed my body composition significantly I am now over 12 weeks with no body fat lost. So I would like to ask a few question about the Carnivore diet: 1- How long should I extend my experience with the Carnivore diet to be able to lose the excess bodyfat I still have?(at least 15lbs of fat) 2- What is the minimum time you should maintain a Carnivora diet when it is not working for you?(how many weeks or months) 3-Is the Carnivore diet effective for those who are aldreay healthy and just need to improve body composition? I am affraid this way of eating is too restrictive, for a healthy person, with no aditional benefit from any other whole food diet. PS: Most of my time as a Carnivore i have not experience most Carnivore benefits or lost any body fat. Also, Sorry for any grammar mistake, i am Brazilian and english is not my first language. Thank you for your attention!.

Mate, you may simply be eating too much protein. You could be converting that protein to glucose.
@brawndothethirstmutilator98485 ай бұрын
If you’re not insulin resistant and are active, try replacing some of that protein with fruits and dairy. You should have a lot of wonderful seasonal fruit available to you in Brazil. Also, calorie balance matters, especially as you get leaner. Make sure you’re tracking your calorie intake and expenditure to arrive at a modest deficit of calories.

If you are not losing weight, you are simply EATING TOO MANY CALORIES. You cannot eat as much meat as you want AND lose weight on the Carnivore diet. If you eat too many calories, you WILL NOT lose weight. So, you must eat less meat or eggs to make progress. First, weigh yourself. Second, make exact portions of your food each day, and make sure that each day you are eating the same amount of calories. Do this for one week. If you did not lose weight, then on the second week, remove enough food so that you are eating 500 less calories per day. After a week of eating this lesser amount of food, weigh yourself again. If you DID lose weight, congratulations! You figured out the amount of calories your body needs to put you in a caloric deficit to lose weight! If you did NOT lose weight, then once again remove more food from your daily portion, write down how many calories are in that daily portion, and try again for another week. This method makes it easy to know exactly how many calories it will take for you to lose weight. Good luck my friend!
@Anonymous099815 ай бұрын
@@mattpeterson3002 I don’t think you did the math for the food he is eating. I did it and I get under 1,500 calories. Really close to 1400 calories and that was using his higher amount of meat intake. If he is as strict as he says. Maybe he’s not eating enough?

Interesting info here, Dr. Cywes. I wonder, though, about the need for exogenous ketones. If you're eating a properly-formulated ketogenic diet, or espeicially a carnivore diet, you're making plenty of beta-hydroxybutyrate ketones. Our paleolithic ancestors did not have exogenous anything- they just ate meat. And they were probably in a ketogenic state most or all of the time.

Meh, B2 100-200mg/day has been shown to massively improve butyrate in human studies. Also, dysbiosis can have a lot of triggers, especially iron/heavy metals/BPAs etc. You need to address the root cause, otherwise it will just come back. People with iron overload going on a ( stupid ) carnivore diet will have even more problems. Sauna is extremely beneficial For LPS there are a few things that work, Taurine, omega 3s, K1/K2 ( helps intestinal alkaline phosphatase ) and i'm pretty sure the other b vitamins are needed. MTHFR issues overall, some people just need extra help. Once you do these things your body will be healthy again, just going carnivore/vegan/keto etc won't do shit unless you resolve the cause.

@@darrenvail8726 You will always find examples of things that work for some people, some thrive on a vegan diet, some quit carnivore after a few years, but most can't and won't ever understand the biochemistry behind the changes. If you are mthfr homozygous c677t AND you do the stupid carnivore route ( a.k.a meat and salt, no organ meats etc ) then you will have massive problems down the line. Same thing if you have haemochromatosis, even nose to tail can get you in trouble there since we'd probably have long periods of fasting and the iron would get used up OR we would just be bigger and we'd use up more iron day to day. A 6.5 foot 250pound neanderthal will use up more nutrients then an average Joe today. There are a ton of snips and exceptions and while i agree that a meat based diet is good, you need to repair the damage that was done before and understand your unique genetics so see what you need more of or less of. Putting things in black or white never works
