this will definitely help you in unlocking your high notes and for some they may find out they are indeed tenors. It is harder for tenors to unlock their upper register compared to other male vocal types. This is why many guys who are supposed to be tenors get misclassified as baritones in classical singing.

I’m so glad I found this! I am a professionally trained classical singer, and I have always struggled (in my early days of training) to understand how to use both ‘voices’ in one performance. Traditionally, we were trained to use head voice technique right down into our lower register, which seemed unnatural and sounded ‘false’. I haven’t sung for many many years, and I am scared my voice is gone. But after doing just one of Justin’s exercises, I knew instantly I can still sing...

I’m an amateur pianist and singer. But I think I’ve worked out the passaggio pretty well after listening to the great opera singers. In my pop singing, people sometimes remark that I have a wide range from bottom to top. They have no idea what I’m talking about when I say it’s three different voices, but I don’t show the gear changes! My technique is when I’m in the passaggio, I imagine a bridge over a river, and rather than climb up to the bridge, I pop onto it from above. The actual mechanism is to place the sound in the soft palate, and it seems to work.

The bigger, thicker and deeper voices show the clearest examples of a vocal "break",,, A deep bass-baritone's resonance shift from chest to head is also more obvious than on a tenor, or a girl... Either you allow you deep voice to flip to falsetto (unconnected and develop a really good falsetto with a deep timbre) and work on getting a smooth break point,, or you practice and practice a scale going from C4 to G4 (say you crack around E4-F4) until you can keep them vocal chords connected without straining and maintain the larynx and diapragmh in the same place and maintain a stable volume through the scale... It is really hard to do when you have big thick vocal chords trying to get the airpressure correct and the small muscles keeping the chords connected,, too little pressure and you voice flips inte falsetto (safe),,, to much pressure and it cracks and you strain and get a sore throat.. It takes time for us deep male singers to get it right,,, getting control on the delicate muscles involved...And we tend to add to much weight when we get up in pitch to avoid sounding girly,, but first it is best that it sounds girly and thin and maybe quacky (we are not talking falesetto the chords must be conencted),, later when you mastered the connected headvoice you can work on applying some techiniques to darken its sound....

Hi Zura, will you describe what you mean by "support from down below" a little more?
@zuraiashvili8647
@zuraiashvili8647 10 жыл бұрын
By down bellow i mean region bellow solar plexus, you should not use any muscles above that because it will cause tension in your throat. Basically as you take in breath, keep your abdominal muscles(around your navel) slightly tense as well as back muscles. But be aware you should not overdo it. To get better idea which muscles i mean and what level of tension we are talking about, try inflating balloon with your mouth or just imitate it and you will feel that your abdominal muscles will tense up by themselves. that tension you keep as long as you sing the phrase, then relax take breath, let diaphragm decend and go again.
@ohbdave

Great description! I tried it and it feels different than I normally breath. I think I've tried to tense up too much in the past. Thanks for the reply! David

Okay, since I'm a fairly experienced singer but started before puberty, knowing my passaggio is difficult since my voice doesn't automatically start breaking at a certain note. I automatically control the flow and all decently enough that brakes don't generally occur. I've recently started delving into this subject because I'm not really sure if I'm a very high baritone, or a very low tenor. In delving into this, I've started to research more into my voice. I've noticed that at between B3-C#/D4, singing really really soft and quiet starts getting unstable, think the limit for the supersoftness is C#4. I can sing D4, and D#4 very softly as well, but not AS quiet as B3-C#4 and under. At E4 singing in D4-softness gets harder but still possible, F4 I can sing quiet, soft and airy, and F#4 is really the highest I can go and still have a decent softness and quietness but still have a decent enough tone. At G4 I really do have to amp up the pressure a bit if I don't want it to sound strained. Is this F#4/G4 difference what is known as the passaggio? Does this mean my passaggio is F#4, or does it mean my passaggio is E4 or F4 because it starts getting tougher there? Is the C#4 my first passaggio? From thereon, G4-A4 is easy, A#4 is, I think, about the highest I can go without using any mix at all, i.e only deep chest voice, but I mean, who sings with pure, deep chest voice at that height? I think B4 is the highest "comfortable" tone. That's, I think, the highest I would go in a more "classical themed" song, like opera or something (although it in opera it would be the absolute highest, because it does sound pretty rocky and sharp). C5 is, I don't know, there's almost a break between B4 and C5 that has to do with mix. It's hard to explain but using a mix voice above C5 is "relatively" easy, but if I have to change between notes below C5 and notes above C5, it can be more tricky. Don't get me wrong, it's not head voice/falsetto. It's not chest voice, but it's definitely not head voice/falsetto because it's got much more power and timbre than I could achieve in head voice/falsetto. Anyway, I've rambled on far enough. My real question is really if the F#4 is where my passaggio is located. If you want you can give me insight on whether you think I'm a tenor or a baritone. (My voice is pretty light when I sing, but not Michael Jackson or anything, and I don't talk especially high, pretty much a high average speaking voice).

Right, my voice has broken and I'm 14 btw! I am a Countertenor (Alto-Mezzo) and my range is an F3 to Bb6 and my first passaggio (Chest to Head) is at an F4. I can sing a D4 and E4 loudly in chest voice. I haven't found my mixed voice and thus can't belt properly… YET AGGAGA My Tessitura for my chest voice is a G3 to a D4! My head voice starts at G4 and goes all the way up to a G#5 without any falsetto! I'm more of a head voice singer but I practice more with chest oops XD My second passaggio is at a D5 (Lower Head to Higher Head) My tessitura in head voice would be a B4 to E5! My falsetto starts at an A5 and only goes up to a D6. I haven't used my falsetto in 3 years though. It's so high up that it's so hard to access. I prefer not to use it though. It is really sharp and piercing ahaha. I hate using falsetto anyways :P I love my head voice too much ahahah I do have the flageolet register which goes from a C6 to a Bb6 but I don't use it at all because I have to force it out :/ I have absolutely no airy bits apart from my lower head voice :P Also, before y'all start getting on my case about my primo passaggio, Countertenor's rarely have a female passaggio and usually have extended head voices like myself! Rare cases are lucky ahahaha Mitch Grassi is an example of a Countertenor similar to me! Chest voice that has a natural passaggio of an E4. His head voice isn't as extended as mine however, and he usually sings higher notes in his falsetto. Chris Colfer is the same case as Mitch. I am super grateful for my voice though :D My friends refer to me as the Natural Countertenor which I think is really flattering and lovely

Cyan Azurae Interesting, testosterone is not strong in this one, hahah jk mate, but really, Passaggio in one hell of a thing, my range goes from B1 to A4, counting my falsetto it goes up to G6, my freaking range SUCKS, I really want to develop my ass up to a C5. I'm realy confused about being a tenor o a baritone, but my former vocal teacher said I'm a tenor.
@cyanazurae1820
@cyanazurae1820 9 жыл бұрын
Alberto Hinojosa Ahaha! It's okay I agree that I have 0 testosterone (That word sounds gross XD), and I like it to stay that way (FOREVER) :) *KEY NOTE* I'm bisexual and transsexual [Haven't gone through the change yet though] and *SUPER DUPER*, like I mean the *most feminine person in the world* level of feminine so that probably explains it XD You're definitely a medium tenor considering your falsetto is quite developed to be able to go over the soprano C :O You'll get that C5 in no time! Don't worry! Passagio is a bitch honestly… Your primo is probably a B3 or a C4 while your second is probably either an E4 or an F4! (Considering mine's F4 and D5 ;)) Don't be disheartened though ;) It took me awhile to get my resonance to even be able to safely sing up to an F4 in chest voice :P *KEY NOTE 2* I have OCD so I feel the need to point out things I can't stand like stereotypical 'male things' like testosterone for example, sorry :( I guess I love being feminine a lot XD SORRY

Hi Justin, I know you did a video on the deadly "I" vowel and it really helped me. Is it possible in the future to do a video on other vowels? especially the "ee" vowel when sung as a high note? or should I do an exercise similar to the MWI one and make it MWEE instead?
@fi4re
@fi4re 3 жыл бұрын
A bit late to the party, but I've heard that you should try to sing it like an "ih" sound, such as the "i" in "sick". That way, you don't get the annoying bright "eeee" but people can still hear you're trying to sing an e.

This exercise was awesome and helped me get through the passagio. However, I’m reaching a sticking point. After I sing, I feel a residual tightness in my throat area. When I’m actually singing, everything feels comfortable. The tightness comes afterwards when I’m not doing anything. I don’t have hoarseness and the tight feeling goes away after some days of rest. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I’d appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!
@estebol1
@estebol1 6 жыл бұрын
Well, it sounds to me like the soreness and tightness comes from the extended use of the support muscles in the throat that the exercise is made ti trigger. If that is the case, you should practice loosening your throat every now and then while you do the exercise so that, as you become more confident in and acustomed to the posture and the muscles involved are strengthened, you slowly stop getting the tightness you are expreriencing. Hope this helps, I don't have too much experience with voice training specifically but I do know that whenever a body part to perform an action it is not used to, there will be muscles that will resist and some that will intervene but fortunately this can be fixed with practice and experimentation of how you use the specific muscles

hi justin, i am a countertenor so technically it sounds like my voice has 2 parts , 1 is male voice and another one is female voice, but between my male voice and female voice have a gap, that gap sounds a little bit softer than the other part of my voice, and i want to make it stronger then how can i do that. And also i really wonder that when i practice vocal exercises i should practice with my male voice or female voice or both ???? Thank you !!!!!

Hello Justin. I am a baritone in my teenage years and I am trying to increase my vocal range on the higher end, and eliminate my vocal breaks/cracks. Right now, I can comfortably sing up to a D4, but after that, my voice completely breaks. I understand what you are saying about not getting too loud, not switching into falsetto, etc. I tried your "ma-awn-nawn" exercise too. Although, I still am having issues hitting the higher notes. Can you help me?

+Connor Patrick Vocalize DOWNWARD ONLY. Downward one-octave falsetto scales on a medium dark "aw" vowel, starting around B or C above middle C and crossing down over the entire lower range of your voice, down to the baritone A (and below). The voice will show you where and how it wants to cross over. Don't push. The crossover initially will happen a third or fourth below your actual passagio, but will be able to occur higher within a month or so. Good luck.

Justin, I'm dounting that a guy's primo passagio is really that E or F. I mean, for you it is since you're a leggiero tenor, but I've seen some guy singers that literaly have theirs about a fifth below yours (they are obviously bassos/bass-baritones). Could you clarify the classical fach's passagios?

Okay, so my primo passagio is E-flat 4. my secondo passagio is A-flat 4. A-flat 4 is when my voice enters into this crazy upper-extention that connects to really high notes. My zona di passagio is a little hard to navigate since in order for me to have a chance to sing in it successfully, I have to lighten up a lot and let my head voice start to take over around C4/middle C. Could I be a leggiero tenor?

Many years ago, before I knew what a register was, I was trying to explain my voice cracking to a friend, and she told me it means that you are singing outside your range. I think we were in the seventh grade. Funny how this still bothers me, many years since I lost contact with her. I think she was a soprano. Maybe she never tried reaching her lower notes?

Your prolly a Tenor that's breaking into his head voice rather than smoothing into your registration. I break on G#4 if I'm not careful and I smooth it into A4 and up and I'm a Tenor. It feels like a really open chesty mix that smooths into more of a solid, heady blend.

My voice gets lighter after E flat 4, on the E4. Then it feels like I have a bump leading from F#4 onto the G4. Are those my passaggio notes? I'm a little confused, my range is F#2-C#5 (including head) if that matters, any help would be really appreciated :) I'm really not sure if I'm a Baritone or a Tenor.

Please help, anyone. I don't want to push my voice too high if I'm not a Tenor, I have a LOT of power that i rarely use in my head. My A4 is insane, but I worry about damaging my voice, I lost the ability to speak a couple years ago along with my singing voice, for various reasons, mostly my own fault... I saved my voice and got almost all of my range back but my confidence is shaky. Any help at all would be appreciated so much. If I ever learn enough about the voice to be able to teach, I'd like to help people with damaged voices for free.

Runaway Suzie Judging from your vocal range, I'm guessing you might be male. But I'm not entirely sure because of your user name. If you damaged your voice from singing, it can either from using wrong technique or you're over-singing. That bump you mentioned leading to f#4 might mean that you haven't fully learned how to transition well from your chest to your head voice and yes this might be your passaggio. It might be a different case considering I haven't really heard you sing but based on your description this is what I can come up with. Well you are PROBABLY not a tenor. A tenor's typical lowest note is around b2 and c3. Again, I can't say for sure because I haven't heard your voice. Your passaggio however is a tenor's but it might not be the case IF you're straining as you reach for e4 - f#4. I can't say for sure what your voice type is but don't let these labels define your limits. I hope this helped.

Lawrence Munarriz Thank you for your help. I'm a guy, the name is from a song :).I just hit an e5 repeatedly and comfortably in what sounded like head voice, it sounded full and really powerful, which is strange. E4 is easy for me, my voice is light, very light if that matters. I went through some scales with a friend of mine earlier, they told me to allow my voice to lighten naturally as I go up the scales. The F#4 and G4 felt fine after I did that. She said it sounded like my voice lightened when I hit E4 and then I switched to head at A4. We repeated this a few times. I think she's right. I feel uncomfortable singing b2 and lower, but I can. I could link you to a recording of me singing around the C#3 - E4 if that might help?
@renzo123ification
@renzo123ification 9 жыл бұрын
that would really help me determine your voice type :) By the looks of your new description, it looks like you might be a tenor after all. I have to take a look at that recording though to be sure.

My passaggio is the last one. That's the technical term for it right there. It's weird though. If I start with my low voice I can only get so high, but then I have to change my voice to something different to hit the higher notes. But I can't transition from the low voice to the high voice without stopping.
