Wow, how well did that go?!?! Even with all the cooks in the kitchen. This reminds me of every major project with my family, you can have everything worked out perfectly, and then friends and family will come in and try to tell you a better way to do it. Overall great result as usual. So amazing to see this. Thanks for bringing us all along.

Hey Rossco, that particular Sunday was bloody hot up here so stayed inside in the air con and came across your videos which as a house builder renovator i found them fascinating as to how the fiber glassing is all done! Know Coomera area well, we launch our boat from Horizon Shores now and then. Rudi Mas hasn't changed in 50 years I reckon, we are sure we can hear banjo's playing every time we pass it in the boat!! Great vid, been looking at modern foam-core yacht's and wondering what exactly that means, now I know exactly. and learned so much. laughed out loud when you wiped the latex gloves in the t-shirt before handling the foam board, clearly a trick of the craftsman. What is the added value of the foam to the inside of the Hull? - Structural? - Vibration & Sound deadening? - Insulation? I ask this because the insulation becomes a divider between the interior dividers and the exterior of the Hull. Right? Seems like all structural connections should go from interior bracing to exterior layer of the Hull Fiberglass. No?
@LifeOnTheHulls4 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy.Foam is a structural component as it forms a bridge between laminates thereby increasing stiffness whilst reducing significant weight. It further adds to insulation both thermal and noise and provides a rot proof core for added longevity.Cheers Rossco

@chikobato72177 жыл бұрын
Hello again, good work and very good "how to.." videos. One question on this one, why would you glue the foam boards, they are not going anywhere as they will be embedded in glass?
@LifeOnTheHulls7 жыл бұрын
Chiko, Thanks for the comment. The foam core is required to be adhered in all cases as it is required to be held in place before any lamination can occur. In my case as I working alone, to simply place the foam in place would guarantee movement or dislodging by the time I get around the laminating over the top of the surface. Even in an infusion process the foam is held on with a film of spray glue that hold vertical surface foam and contoured foam and the placement is absolutely critical for correct engineering. That said, Australian Maritime Safety authority requires the foam to be glued with a specialised paste ie sealite, as well as hot coated with 300csm and resin catalysed at between 2 and 2.5% to set off both resin and sealite guaranteeing a secure bond or the foam would simply lift off. I was able to glue down foam and leave for extended periods until I got around to completing the covering layers, which then formed the penetrating spikes and grid score resin attachments for the upper surface.Compression roller then consolidates the csm and sealite into the foam perforation ensuring a mechanical and chemical hold. All in all it has worked out to be labour intensive but perfect result with zero chance of delamination. Cheers and thanks again for joining in the fun. Rossco

Hello! are you using vinylester with wax in it every layer, exept the last layer, or is the wax always inn? and why do you use vinylester instead of polyester?? in sweden the polyester resin is much much sheaper than vinylester, can I use that insted?
@JCrook10284 жыл бұрын
He used the vinylester because it is stronger and more resistant to water osmosis.

No protection suite? I get the itches just watching you work with fiberglass!
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
I only need the suit when spraying and sanding substraas the itch only occurs when the glass is airborne as it is sanded or ground. There is no itch when laminating stitched cloth until one comes to sand or grind it, that when the fun starts and I am paranoid about the itch. Cheers

I use to spray 2 part poly for tank waterproofing. What is your gun set up and what ratio are you spraying?? Thanks
@LifeOnTheHulls5 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy, really appreciate you watching my series, The gun sprays saturated polyesters and vinylester resin including gel coats.Ratio is between 1 and 4 precent catslyst which I can adjust dependant humidity or temperature.Resin is catalyzed approx 1nch from gun nozzle to reduce clean up and ensures accuracy and longevity of product. Did you end up using the heat guns? Or were the clamps sufficient enough?
@olivercarlin26502 жыл бұрын
theoretically if you were speeding at around 60 mph and landing on water with a catamaran hull with foam core, Do you think it would survive the impact? weird question i know but there's method in the madness
@olivercarlin26502 жыл бұрын
The reason i asked was, I wanted to build an ekranoplan catamaran hybrid, check it out, definately get you over the seas quickly.
@LifeOnTheHulls2 жыл бұрын
Oliver, I am not convinced it wouldn't handle the landing as the foiling catamarans are carbon foam core and they are cruising at 60mph at their fastest. Check out the sail GP site and superfoilers and they seems to be ok, I live close to the superfoiler builders and they are capable of speeds almost as high as that. I believe the rigidity is fine , the actual laminate would be the critical factor and reinforcement under tension as the inside of the structure would be prone to delamination due to the impact and compression on the other hull. Ross
@olivercarlin26502 жыл бұрын
@@LifeOnTheHulls Wow Thanks Ross, I could definately use the help of an engineer on the materials, I was thinking of using densified would which removes lignum from the wood reducing size and weight while also producing steel like strength, it's a relatively new method, then using a mix of fiberglass, carbon, kevlar or basalt as the last couple provide better impact resistance, i also thought wood does well when the fibers attempt to compress, I might be completely insane though and thinking nonsense.

Oliver.Emirates Team NZ have developed a foiling hydrogen powered chase boat that can do 50knots,check it out, that shows what is the future.I do worry for the marine life on the surface with foiling technology and the resultant damage to foils tendering them useless.Ekranoplan look very interesting.Definately carbon kevlar to balance rigidity with impact strength.I love carbon kevlar and use regularly.Ross

I want to build a 32'-36' Catamaran, much like the 1988 crowther spin drift 38'. any tips on how I can get information on how to build a hull? I was thinking of just doing some thing in the video I linked with 5 lb vinyl foam that i linked. kzbin.info/www/bejne/haikc42KZ9V8pJo The hull won't be able to walk all the way up and down. only about 12 (3.6576 meters) Feet of the outer hulls you will be able to stand in and access from the cabin. The cabin will be smaller too about 12 feet long (3.6576 meters) and 8 feet wide. The total width of the boat Beam will be about 14 feet (4.2672 meters) Now my concern is if I can get the hull strong enough using the technique as follows. I figured I wouldn't need as much material since my boat would only be half the size of yours. inner Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 42.5243 g Woven roving 18 oz or 510.291 gram (for flattest areas on the hull) Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 42.5243 g 36 oz - 1200 gr/m^2 Triaxial fiber glass Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 42.5243 g Foam core 3/8-1/2" Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 36 oz - 1200 gr/m^2 Triaxial fiber glass Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 42.5243 g Chopped Strand Mat: 1 1/2 ounce 42.5243 g outer I also want to Design a super structure through the hull like a skeleton. Combining old techniques with new. To hopefully reduce the costs of building a cat. www.fibreglast.com/product/Chopped_Strand_Mat_1_1_2_ounce_00250_1/Fiberglass_Mat www.fibreglast.com/product/Woven_Roving_223/Fiberglass_Fabric www.fibreglast.com/product/vinyl-foam-5-lb-density/Foam kzbin.info/www/bejne/haikc42KZ9V8pJo or if you have ideas on cutting costs with better sources that would be cool too. If all else fails ill find a $20k-$30k cat and fix it up haha. I guess building one I can buy the parts little by little. Instead of all at once.
