To me, the hope that the church would change its plans for any of the other items the residents are concerned about (such as lighting) in an effort to be a good neighbor is a pipe dream. The church doesn't know what the definition of a good neighbor is.

Here is what the City of Cody Personnel Policy says: Central to the standard of ethical conduct is the City’s policy that no employee shall have any interest, financial or otherwise, direct or indirect, or engage in any business transaction, or professional activity or incur any obligation of any nature which is in conflict with the discharge of the person’s duties in the public interest. So if there is some sort of conflict of interest with the planning staff, the City through its City Manager could have taken some personnel action if this was in fact violated. So far it appears they haven't determined that there was a conflict of interest (although personnel disciplinary actions are proprietary and not public information generally)
@mormonishpodcast1036
@mormonishpodcast1036 2 ай бұрын
The city said that it wasn’t a conflict unless it was financial. Non-member city officials have no idea that their temple recommend holding members have sworn an oath in the temple to give everything they have up to their own life to the building up of the church on earth. I think it would be fair to say that an oath such as this meets the cities requirements and both the city planner and the LDS board member should have recused themselves. I think the city planner resigned because he was feeling the pressure.

A couple of thoughts. From listening to Matt Harris's interview on Mormon stories, sending people on remote missions who served the church but were getting negative publicity for it is in their play book as well. I sure hope this is not a “ beware of what you wish for “ moment for the Cody LDS members. Judging from the recent consolidation of 4 Stakes to 3, it seems active membership is significantly shrinking. It’s well known that temples require a lot of volunteer labor, in the form of ordinance workers but now they have started requiring members to clean the inside and do landscape maintenance for free as well. This blessing could easily become a burden. And maybe a curse.

The strategy of shell LLC's and prosperity Gospel advancement is real... look at RFM's affinity fraud recent episodes. There are examples back to the early 1900's where the best legal protection was to send a man on a Mission or make them a Mission President. It's an easy spin to announce through Church newsroom now, if they need to, that a fine upstanding Mission President is being called home to face spurious & defaming charges and control the Narrative.... The ballad of the Ballard's & SEC filings are great examples. The devout refuse to question the Authenticity of Church news announcements. Whether it's the Church, The Newsroom, or Jesus, it's all the same. The leaders don't lie because Jesus won't allow them to while serving in General Authority callings.

I was at 2 meetings. ALL their questions were answered! The 1st meeting lasted over 5 hours. The board had lots and lots of questions and lots of discussion, there was NO confusion at the end of that meeting. One thing you neglected to say is T. Stoell explained that the steeple was within the proper parameters of law and that these stipulations were fashioned after many Wyo. towns and the P&Z passed the zoning plan long before the temple was in the works. Steeples were just fine until a temple became involved.

I know that missionaries pay for their own missions, but I HIGHLY doubt that the Stowells are paying for their mission. Either the church is paying for it, or more likely, the same member who donated the temple site land and is storing the temple building parts on his property is paying for the Stowells' mission.

The LDS Church will build in residential areas as often as they can. Their logic is the SLC downtown went south with age and a changing economy. They didn't like going to work in an area that was no longer as valuable. Their glorious temple was being surrounded by a declining business location. They spent church funds to make a mall and they never want to go through such a trial again. Invest in another town? Their money to help another community to prosper? Never!!!

I’d like to hear more about how many LDS members can even use the temples- is it true that less than 20% of LDS members have temple recommends?
@KolbyReddish
@KolbyReddish 2 ай бұрын
The number I heard from an employee of LDS Family Services about 15 years ago is that only half of endowed members maintain a current temple recommend. Even then, that would have been a lot less of a percentage of the total membership. However I think it’s important to note this was pre-CES Letter and public interest in Mormonism has increased a lot since (and not in ways that appear favorable to the Church).

It was a procedural decision the judge had to make. The influence of an inside man certainly did its job. I feel really sad for the fabric at the community, which is ripped apart. I hope the church might be a bigger person now and make some concessions on lighting or something. This is a sad and cautionary tale that other towns will take note of. Can you imagine as a resident if you found out something was about to be built in your backyard, nine days later your planning and zoning board voted on it with a lot of confusion as to whether it was passed or not, and without you being aware, you only had 10 days to try to launch some kind of complaint. It’s an impossible situation and the church takes advantage of situations like these in small towns all across the nation. Don’t think that people aren’t starting to notice now. Even national news is covering stories about the various towns and the churches actions. This is a stain on the LDS church’s reputation. They have the opportunity to be good neighbors and work with communities. I can’t understand why they won’t. Buildings are more important than people.

I went through a business related lawsuit that attempted to name me personally liable... 1. The estate planning we went through made our home inaccessible to the suit. 2. Our lawyers were quick to request information from us through the discovery process and push the deadline for filing information with the court to the last minute. The lawyers do like to push one another back on their heels. 3. Ultimately, the case was dismissed with prejudice (in my Defendant favor.) 4. I learned something about Plantiff claims in that process as well. Their initial claim is accepted on the belief of truthfulness. Defense proving the claim wrong is the legal process and doesn't rise to the level of perjury. 5. Perjury is knowingly giving false testimony in court to information already in evidence which you've already shown you know the truth concerning. 6. I think the comparisons you've given between Cody Wyoming & Fairview are exactly why the members were quick with their lawsuit intention- notifying within 24 hours the intent to sue. It's far easier to withdraw the suit than to come back after the fact realizing what should have been done. 7. I love the Schrodinger's paradox reference work in, but I think it's less straightforward. The legal process is a chess match of multiple competing paradoxes. Contingent upon one another. Control the center of the board with your Queen and the odds of winning are in your favor. The Church took advantage of a situation that ultimately let them play with two Queens on the board because the final meeting said the Church was getting a knight back... there wasn't a 2nd black Queen available. The system allowed them to identify their Knight as a Queen. Jerk move- but rules allowed.
