That's a pretty awesome bus conversion. That would be a perfect adventure rig for fishing and hunting trips. Chasing stripers up and down the coast in an rv bus with a lifted wrangler on the back, let's go. Just need to mod up a nice roof rack for extra storage.
@man_on_wheelz3 жыл бұрын
Man, whenever I get the space to store and operate on a school bus, I'm getting my money together to make something like this. I'd go the extra mile to make it a fully livable, off the grid RV, but I love the idea of making it a toy hauler as well. I may even make it more friendly towards mounting an ordinary family sedan for those times where this needs to stay at the RV park while you drive around town. Thanks so much for the insight on titling, insuring, and a rough estimated total cost to build something like this. Puts it into perspective and gives hope that this can happen some day if you're handy.

Very clever toy hauler! With a bit of elbow grease you did the job yourself, bravo! Slicing a bus in half must have been loads of fun! Simply amazing you did that. Thanks for explaining how you attached the rear section back to body - combination of riveted metal plates and welding points. Thanks also for explaining the titling and insurance process. Here are the steps I wrote out for myself: To convert School Bus Title to Motorhome RV title in NJ state: 1. Remove all school bus signs, cover up lights, stop sign, decals, and paint over the yellow body. 2. Remove all seats inside, and make it look homey with furniture, sink, bed, couch, fridge, cookware, etc. 3. Get school bus weighed on a certified CAT scale. 4. Apply for RV title with photos and weight, and it may take 3-4 months to get title from them. Apply for Insurance: 1. Once title is in hand, apply for insurance. 2. Never mention the words 'school bus' to insurance company. 3. Mention '2001 Thomas Freightliner RV' with photos. 4. RV insurance is much cheaper. 5. You don't need a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) if you are driving an RV. 6. However, some states may require a CDL if your bus has air brakes, but NJ was okay. I'm very interested in the paint you used to do the exterior. I looked up Sherwin Williams Direct to Metal Paint that you mentioned. It comes as an Industrial Acrylic and also as an Alkyd Enamel. I assume you used the oil based Enamel, right? Some questions: 1. What did you use to brush it on - brush, roller, mohair roller, other? 2. What solvent did you use to dilute it, clean brushes - Xylene, Mineral Spirits, Acetone....? How easy was it to find the solvent in your state? CA has so many anti VOC laws that paint products are hard to find. 3. How many coats did it take? 4. How is the color holding up in the sunlight and weather? Any fading, flaking, peeling, etc? 5. Would you have done it differently now that you have lived with it? I have an RV to paint and research into paints is difficult. Bedliner? Automotive? Specialty paint? So much to know and its pricey so experimenting is not an option. My tip to you: Fabric.com has Roclon Blackout rubber cloth at $2/yd on sale at 60" width. Effective for backing your curtains. Blocks out light, insulates a bit, and prevents curtains fading in sunlight. Good stuff!
