The soil is taken off the bogs ,but its mainly for fuel .When peat drys it can be burned it was the main heat source growing up in the west of ireland we had oil but only for a few hours a day and gas for cooking but most of the cooking was done on the range which was fed with peat

A lot of people do the southern part of the WAW, get to Galway and then go back to Dublin. They really don't realise what they are missing by cutting the north-west out. Another great video!

@@SeanandEmily Yeah that's what I said, impossible to ride them all, the WAW is laid out to suit tour buses, the best biking roads are not really on it, local knowledge and just plain taking the road less travelled is the key, hope you enjoyed the north east of Ireland, not great there really, few bits are ok, the west is the best as Jim Morrison said!😎

I do a loop on that glenveagh mountain road quite often as it’s just on my doorstep (Kilmacrennan) and on the way back I take in the coastal road which takes you around the north Donegal coast. I have some footage of some of the coast roads on my channel there. And you’re right about doing it in the evening time as the roads are quieter and if you’re lucky you might get a nice sunset too. Some of the most scenic spots are on these roads but if you were to do them all you would need more time! I’m really lucky when I think all this is right on my doorstep. Some people say Donegal, the forgotten county of Ireland, but I say that’s the way I like it! 11:45

Hi both, another epic leg of your tour, really beautiful. Just a little bit of info I think those earth scrapings you mentioned are Peat cuttings historically dried and used for fuel during the winter months, it is one of those contentious subjects because of large extractions being used as potting compost that was removed in a industrial scale causing devastation to the ecology. Thank you.

Not only that, they were using it in power stations and selling peat briquettes (compressed peat) commercially. It’s more or less stopped now but people can still cut some for their own use apart from a few protected bogs.

@SeanandEmily you got epic weather while you were here. The soil is actually peat and you were travelling through a peat bog. The peat (or turf) is cut and stacked in little piles to dry out before being brought to the houses to burn as fuel. I'm sure you would have smelt the smoke coming from the chimneys. It's a pleasant smell.

The midlands of Ireland is very flat. It’s possible to come to Dublin and go to Galway, Kilkenny, Cork etc. and never see a mountain. People who’ve done that think they’ve seen a lot of the country and have a good idea of what it’s like. But the majority of the coastline is fairly mountainous and there are a few inland mountain ranges as well although usually not as craggy.

The north west gets a fraction of the tourists the south west does. That’s why you haven’t heard of that road. Tourists usually go to Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Killarney, Blarney, Kilkenny and back to a Dublin. Then some go to Belfast and the Giant’s Causeway. And that’s pretty much it. The highest sea cliffs, the highest waterfall, some of the best beaches, the most remote parts of the country are all left unseen by the vast majority of tourists. It’s mainly down to marketing. The south west is marketed extensively and is the golden goose of Irish tourism. The rest of the country can go hang as far as Tourism Ireland and the government is concerned. The Wild Atlantic Way has helped but the difference in numbers is stark. And as you’ve seen, it’s not because the scenery is lacking.

i guess it's not a bad thing to keep the masses contained in a specific area but at the same time the revenue from tourism could probably be useful to some communities. Glad there are still quiet spots to enjoy , that's the beauty of motorcycle travel. 😊
