Epic RANT on Gender "Equality" - Jordan Peterson on why there are so few women at the top

Jordan Peterson on gender equality, the different choices men & women make, and the reasons so few women are in positions of power. Most people get the "equity" or "gender parity" part precisely backwards, asking why there are so few women at the top, when in fact the real question is why are there any people at all crazy enough to accept the burdens of being in those top positions.

I disagreed on many points. 9:25 "It has nothing to do with masculine structures of values"? Valuing success and competition is the definition of a masculine society. It's a known fact that individualistic societies like the US value masculinity more than femininity. What he's right about is that adopting a more feminine culture doesn't really solve this issue. We don't have more female execs in more feminine societies (e.g. Denmark) either, so we know it doesn't work that way. Corporate environments are always going to encourage masculine values, because hierarchy and competition generate the most profit. Should we blame them for it? I absolutely think not. But we still need to acknowledge that a masculine social structure *does* exist. 2:30 Happiness and freedom aren't the same thing? That's true, but you mostly can't have happiness without freedom. To say that women's lives are more complicated today because they have more choices now is idiotic. The point *is* to have a choice, to have options! Such outdated thinking for a university professor. ("Women have paid a big price"... lol.) Several times, he phrased his opinion poorly. He made all the fundamental mistakes you could imagine when debating women's issues. A blatant example is when at 9:56 he basically assumed that a woman won't be happy without having been married. So he bases many of his statements on assumptions based on gender. "She's a woman, so she most likely will regret not having children". Good luck successfully debating anyone with this method. He also says that it's biological factors that determine the careers of women, not an unjust social structure. I'm not even going to bother expanding on this one, just going to leave it here. At 4:04 ge makes another basic, *extremely* basic mistake he makes is equating one's success with the amount of work one does. His argument for men succeeding is that they work hard? We all know the world doesn't work like that (if it did, we'd have more women in higher positions), and believing otherwise is the most conspicuous trait of a right-wing authoritarian, which many people accuse him of being. I personally don't think he's alt-right at all, but after hearing him say all these baseless opinions, I wonder if he has any scientific credibility at all in the field.

+dfsa, 1.Exactly. Capitalism favours COMPETITION. Men are more competitive. 2.More choices makes things more complicated because you will have to invest more on each subject to make the RIGHT choice. 3.Only 5% of the female population choose not to have children... so if she is like MOST other women, she will PROBABLY regret not having shildren... 4. 4:04 He is talking of men, on the verge of being autistic. Not ordinary men...

When I read your "Are u serious?" comment, I read it as you being disappointed in my wishes of good health to Jordan. The smartest women I know started their own businesses instead of depending on someone else to pay them what they wanted. It's the same thing for men. The world doesn't owe anyone a high paying job. Somebody has to provide the jobs; they don't simply materialize from the sky . . . or government. Without people starting businesses there would be no government fed by the taxes of people working.

As a middle aged practicing clinician I absolutely and deliberately made a decision as JP describes and so did nearly every single other practicing woman I know ... and they are top performing people . One of the primary reasons I'm no longer able to think of myself as a feminist and a liberal is the absolute lack of respect for my accomplishments and choices ... all of which have proven pretty damn good . No one can have it all and choices have to be made .

Which is exactly why that information needs to get out to young women: 95% of professional women just completely drop out after a few years- doctors, attorneys, engineers, etc. So ALL of that money spent on your education (that most will still be paying back for decades) ALL WASTED. For NOTHING. So WHY even bother? Not to even mention the fact that you prob got into college ahead of a male with better grades because of Affirmative Action in colleges and universities; a man who would have become a doctor and stayed working for LIFE. But most women are so amoral and shameless today they don't even care, they even think it's funny that you fucked over a man by cheating, not to mention society in general. What pieces of shit as human beings. And society needs as many GOOD and RELIABLE doctors as possible, not just some silly little girls wanting to play doctor for a couple of years and just getting the way and because more women are going to medical school because of this absolute STUPIDITY there will be a doctor shortage in the future. Really, REALLY fucking STUPID.

It started affecting me physically, mentally, and emotionally - so, I put a stop to it. Now, I work 40 hours and stop. Working extra did nothing for my career; in a nutshell, my bosses were paying me a salary and then taking advantage of my ambitious nature to climb the ladder. They dangled higher positions in front of me, then yanked them away when I got close enough. It wasn't worth it. I have enough money that I am secure. I know finding a 'man' at this point of my life who won't simply marry a pretty twenty-year old is low, so I focused on becoming a foster mother. no this is straight up a rant. he is irritated and blows through his thoughts without acknowledging when the audience reacts (laughs to what he says). my reaction to this is "wow, this guy is really pissed off for some reason". he's also not answering the question. he's just trying to make it sound like the positions of power are not something women should want, which is pretty weird. he always comes across as being thoughtful about stuff. but if you really think about what he's saying, there's a ton of creepy sexist undertones. and when he's ranting, you don't have a moment to digest it and realize what he's actually saying. he's saying some pretty wacky shit. I would stay away from this guy on the street

Some might say that he's exaggerating these stories, but that's exactly his point. He's outlining the very extreme examples of individuals in the upper echelons of society who make up a fraction of a percent of the workforce that occupy these positions. He's arguing that people who occupy these positions aren't there because of corruption, but because of their competence, which bears an overwhelming amount of responsibility; a responsibility that the vast majority of people are ineffective at managing.

The best answer to this question (why there's so few women in position of power) is answered by that few women in power and they will state the same thing as J. Peterson - it's insane competition, long hours, you work from dawn till dusk by yourself and you are addicted to power, you get your kicks from being better than your competition even if it is a petty thing (like a bonus).

Indeed, I work as an adviser with men of power, I admire them but would never want to be on their place. They are so competitive and energetic, I don't have such energy, and while I'm ambitious, I'm not competitive at all. I would rather help them to succeed and get my bonuses from that, instead of fighting for the power against such unstoppable people. I enjoy working full time, but full time for me is about 6 hours of productive work a day, no more than that.

5:30 He just revealed an interesting point. Men, back in the day, were content once the rent was paid and the family was taken care of. SO, the government and the banks, had to get women out of the home so that there would be a greater demand for goods and more money would be in the marketplace. Feminism has always been about, getting men to fear money and chase after it, in addition to boosting the tax base. Earlier in the video he points out that economic prosperity is tied to women's liberation, i.e. money and expenses kicked off with second-wave feminism and it isn't REALLY about gender equality, it's about banks. We broke down the AMerican Family for AMerican Express.

Rhys Davies Only masculine, assertive, and dominant men tend to be in positions of power. Effeminate or beta men cannot be leaders of men, because they lack the charisma, ability to maintain control of themselves and others, and the confidence needed to lead. So it makes no sense that a feminist, who hates “the patriarchy”, feels entitled to a CEO or a successful entrepreneur or something like that, when all of the men who are in those positions are traditionally masculine. I’ve never met a sissified boss man. Bottom line is, if feminists hate “toxic masculinity”, then why should they feel they want a masculine man?

A friend told me that her mom used to regularly wake up at 2 or 3 am to call Taiwanese clients and show up late to many personal things because of a 70+ hour work week. She would get paid $400-500 thousand per year, which is about 4x her husband’s salary (and they worked in the same engineering field). They have a house and other properties because of her work. But she got sick. When she got better, she realized her personal life had really suffered, and she found much more happiness when she prioritized her family and friends more. I know for a fact that my friend stopped bad mouthing her mom and just in general became smarter, less aggressive, more confident, and assertive. And the husband still made more than enough money to get by. They had enough to send my friend to 5 years of college without any financial aid while still keeping their houses. So I think Jordan is right. You have to be an insane, one in a thousand person to find true joy grinding through work like that.

If I ever reach the top or close to it, I'll hate having to give away 40% of my pay just because I worked harder than anyone else to get there. Also in regards to women in the workplace (I'm a girl, early twenties), I've had trouble with every girl I've had to share a workload with. I work my ass off to get higher up and because of that have earned a lot of respect from the team. The other girls feel threatened and instead of stepping it up, they just try to bring me down by picking out any small mistake I make and making sure everyone in the office knows I messed up. All the guys I work with on the other hand are just grateful when I take some of their workload away, and in return help me when I need it.

Raising kids is work. It's a different kind of stress. Being responsible for the safety and well-being of little, vulnerable, inexperienced humans is high-pressure. It's just high-pressure over more of the long-haul. I've known an inordinately high number of people who have committed suicide in their young adulthoods, as well as people whose children committed suicide in their young adulthoods. The mothers in those families FAILED. The Father's were horrible, too, but the suicides were the results of the actions and inactions of the mothers, not the fathers. When you approach motherhood with that knowledge, you understand that the stakes are higher on your end.

@@CCubes88 Atleast specify that suicide deaths are not caused by men themselves, it's a lot more complicated than that. Work place deaths is because women refuse to work those jobs and someone has to so that isn't because of men. Combat deaths are because of men only because they were the ones ruling, if women ruled we might see similar things or differen't no data so pure speculation. and Homicide victims are due to men. So those statistics Partially disprove his/her point sweetheart. It also was not in response to OP but rather Dancing Socrates who took a comment(or multiple) on the internet and thought people were serious with what they typed. And about the special treatments, you often hear that we need more women in CEO positions .. well. If you want to be a CEO, or be on the board of directors of a big corporation? Get an education, or an entry-level job in your preferred industry. Work 60-70 hour weeks for years on end, billing only 40, of course. Take no vacations. Never get sick. Choose not to have kids, or have kids and let your husband take care of them while you work and never get to see them. Have no social life outside of work. Always be available. Miss family get-togethers, birthdays, graduations and school plays. Never turn down an opportunity to take on more responsibilities. And you might be successful in the CEO position your holding, if you don't screw up once because then you're done. But the likelyhood you'll be happy with this type of life is so small you might aswell not go for it unless you are damn sure you are the small percent of women who likes that.

not sure where you read "rape women" in these comments, I've been scrolling through them for quite a while now. While I'm delighted you're insightful enough to listen to constructive arguments and think freely for yourself as a feminist, I would also like to point out that anyone that talks about the biological differences between men and women, ie testosterone making men more aggressive and competitive, doesn't mean they're bat shit crazy. Testosterone is what built the west if you really think about it. The constant war against the other man to be the dominant male. It doesn't necessarily mean they beat each other with clubs and then drag women into caves and rape them senselessly. Again, I don't know if that's where you derived that narrative from, but that would be my best guess. I have absolutely no intention of trying to start a flame war.

I think he's referring to, which he has spoken of before, the problem of people not being very good at discerning what they want from what makes them happy in relation to the paradox of choice. If you have more things to choose from you become more indecisive, and as a consequence, if you're not perfectly happy with the choice you made you compare it with the alternatives, making you regretful. The result of this is a human with more freedom and less happiness. That said you definitely gain happiness up to a certain degree from having freedom, but there is a diminishing return and ultimately a negative relation, at least that's what the data suggests. Of course, I can't speak for him but that is my interpretation.

This is one of the reasons why I love Peterson. Whenever I hear a feminist say women should have a right to walk anywhere without fear and the fact that they can't is because of "patriarchy", I keep thinking of the squirrels outside my house. They are ALWAYS on high alert. They hop a few feet and then pause to assess their safety, then hop another few feet, then pause and look around. You walk by with your dog, and they freeze in instinctive terror so as not to be noticed. You can see their sides pumping like a forge bellows as they fill their system with oxygen so they can run for their lives. Sometimes I imagine I can see their pulses thumping in their throats with the force of their heartbeats, as their little systems prime themselves for immediate flight should the dog notice them and give chase. We are less likely to die of physical trauma than at any point in history--whether it's conspecific violence from another human, or being hunted and eaten by a large predator, or falling off a cliff or being killed in a natural disaster. It is almost entirely men (with the support of their women) who have beaten back the wilderness for us. It is men who have conceived, invented and delivered the comfort and safety we currently enjoy, and who continue to maintain this at considerable risk, sacrifice and discomfort to themselves. They conceived and created the very social, political and legal structures that STAVE OFF true oppression in the west, such as due process of law, burden of proof, reasonable doubt and the presumption of innocence (structures feminists are currently attempting to dismantle in the legal areas within their bailiwick). And men in power just cave into their demands and hand them more and more, marginalizing the very group of people who hold up the entire thing. There IS no gratitude on the part of these insane women. There IS no realization that without the edifice of civilization men have constructed, women would be plunged into an existence so abject, deprived and perilous they can't even imagine what it might be like. But, you know, women still sometimes get dicked when they don't want it despite it being against the law, and only 5% of Fortune 500 companies are run by women, so "oppression!" Bill Whittle did a video ages ago called (I think) "three and a half days". His solution for all of these problems is to send these whining SJWs naked into the wilderness for 1/100th of the year, every year. Surviving in that environment, and having to do it once every year, might teach them how privileged they really are, and instil some freaking gratitude.

karen straughan I mean, maybe if women were allowed to leave the house without the accompaniment of a man for the greater part of modern society (which they weren't) we would have had more women creating things that you cling so hard on to to justify your hyper-masculinity. The more you bash the feminine the more you set yourself up for failure because you are denying a part of yourself. But I'll let you teach yourself and catch up on your own because I already know further conversation with you will be useless. I hope you heal your inner traumas that make you fear your feminine so much.

Rylee... "maybe if women were allowed" doesn't that tell you something about the reality of our existence and who created that existence that you despise so and naively deny. The false premise from the beginning of feminism was that men were "given" rights that women weren’t allowed, when in reality men accepted rights that women didn't want, both rights and responsibilities, because women lacked the dynamic capability to assume those rights and responsibilities as uncreative subordinate receivers, due to reproduction and gender evolutionary brain differences.
@idk-jy6cc

Powertuber1000 women legally couldn't have their names on checking accounts until 1974. Women had to ask for that right, we wanted it and we're not allowed it by legal systems ran by men. Now men have systematically caused women to ruin feminism for themselves (via "3rd wave feminism") I do agree that women are denying their natural roles but that is only because we have been conditioned by patriarchal systems to believe that our natural roles are subordinate. Which they are not.

What I've gathered from this message is that the reason there are so few ultra successful women; Is because to be ultra successful takes unreal amounts of effort, even males can barely do it. Nobody sane can become like Tony Stark. That's the entire premise. The idea of being as high functioning as Tony Stark is straight up too hard for any normal person to keep pursuing without sacrificing something significant. It's not because of some convoluted conspiracy that the whole world is against you (why would it even care?) ; It is because it is almost too damn hard for any human being to achieve. You can't be a superhero and the average person at the same time. It just doesn't work.

I don't think so. Tony stark, bill gates, people on top of their fields had specialities adapted to their fields. Bill gates even had a smart home before the common guy had a computer at his home. Most of their success actually comes from their parents. Bill gates was born into a family which could afford a computer when they were extremely expensive. This gave him a edge over others. It's neo feudalism, just like most rags to riches stories, the parents give their children a financial or genetic advantage but yea if bil gates was a girl, he'd still be one of the richest people. He simply has a vision that most people don't and hes active enough to work on it. Most people don't have a vision, girls are generally even less ambitious than boys and even lesser people take a stand and even fewer people actually have that one final advantage to make it to the top. In fact most advantages people have are genetic, like Einstein having a different brain structure than most people or bill gates having the unique sharp motivation to do things his own way but genetics makes people crazy cuz they'll feel cheated and helpless in a game that was rigged even before they were born so I'll just shut up and sit in a corner just observing people nvm

@Ken MacDonald I'm not "sexist", I'm simply speaking from a feminist perspective, in the context of women historically having less social freedom than men. A man can say "freedom isn't that great" all he wants, women still deserve and will strive for the same freedoms. A sentence like that seems like a backhanded appeal to dissuade a woman from reaching the same kind of power if that is the life she so chooses. What exactly do you mean when you say men and women aren't equal? If you mean they are different, I agree.

@@bloodyvitamin Freedom and happiness are not inclusive. Example 1: You want to be the CEO of a large corporation. That means you give up having a life-work balance. To reach that pinnacle means work comes first. So, you give up a work-life balance for it. Which brings us to Example 2: You want a work-life balance that allows you have a family (or something similar that you enjoy). That means you won't be the CEO of a large corporation. I knew someone who had the opportunity to become a vice-president for the South American division of John Deere. He turned it down because he wanted to see his kids more than once a month. Happiness in one area sometimes means sacrifices in others.

@@joehorton5067 Yes of course being a CEO is not does not mean easy work. That isn't the point. The point is that historically, women have been denied the same freedoms that men are entitled to. My belief is that everyone should have equal opportunity to pursue any life path, whether that path is the homemaker or the CEO. In an egalitarian society, even if women do not choose careers in male-dominated fields and men do not choose to commit their lives to fatherhood, the feminism I believe in is that which encourages respect for both sexes pursuing either. That is what I meant by my comment.

You're taking what he said out of context. He's saying that the responsibilities of work give you freedom at the price of happiness. Thank you for your time. I was one of those crazy to succeed girls who worked hard through high school all the way through my Masters (3.9 GPA) and worked for a time at various jobs cause I was not sure what I wanted to do (actually some of my jobs were outside and mildly dangerous and didn't pay that great but I had to get the outdoors thing out of my system as I had spent so many years indoors for school) I finally got really sick after years of one and a half hours of sleep a day while working and was finally was awarded disability. My brain and body will never be the same. I work when I can in my own but it is nothing like what I was shooting for. Your video makes me reconsider my position on that issue. After this I had time to marry. My husband is a disabled vet and we do go through hard times financially but we have each other and realize that some things are more important than money. Sometimes we do make the mistake of envying the rich, cause a vacation or a trip to the spa would be nice and would be a relief from the relative poverty and boredom we do live in but when we compare our lives to those in certain countries or in other times we realize that you are right. I stop to think of what my life would have been like if I had been able to achieve all my goals; I think it might have been lonely and I know the money alone would not have made me happy. Now I do struggle with loneliness because the sick and disabled do get isolated in society and I wish I had more opportunities to get involved other than the hours I spend on research, writing and communicating with people online because online interaction is not the same as friends in person and people really feel free to be extremely rude to those they don't agree with online. It can be a hateful community if you deliberately interact even respectfully with those who have different opinions. What happened to the ability to disagree politely without attacking each other? Maybe you might do a video on that. Thinking about my propensity for intellectual activity and challenge I should probably write a book and actually finish it but have not become interested enough in any one thing yet to do so...I go from Neuroscience to different religions, to political science and various histories or the occasional strange obsession such as rare genetic diseases. Your video made me wonder how many people, male or female, would actually be happy at the top. It sounds like not many. I sometimes envy the hunter gatherer tribes who lack our comforts but spend 4 or 5 hours getting their food and the rest of the time telling stories and loving their kids. I worked so hard in high school so that I would be competitive that I took textbooks to family birthday parties and didn't have a relationship with hardly any of them. That was my choice but I thought society wanted me to make that choice. By the time I got home from school, did homework with 20 minutes to eat dinner with family and back to homework then it was time for chores and then bed. I didn't know there were any other options. I can't get that back. My niece and nephews from that time have moved on with their busy lives. Thanks for sharing. It makes me sad to think about these things but also I realize, as hard as life seems to me sometimes, it could have been worse especially if I made it to the top. By the way I need to change this picture since it was taken in my late 20s. I am 40 now.

Don't ever moan to such trivial things if you cannot check yourself and your efficiency regularly (in Peterson's case - telling that you have studied for 6hrs in the library but in fact, only 1 or 2). An example is my country Vietnam, whose citizens' basic income is considered rich if you earn $500/month, which represents the REAL inequity that is rampant around the globe. Americans, especially liberals, your suffers are not breaking news. Others suffer too, usually more than you guys.

As far as I can figure current thinking on the left boils down to the idea that it's government and society's job to solve people's problems. Debate becomes very confused from that point as they'll come at a conservative or a moderate wondering how we possibly can believe the world is just right now. The problem is that we're on a completely different page. It isn't even a goal of non-progressives to manufacture some outcome of fairness. Life isn't fair, never has been and never will be. The closest we can get is to give everyone equal rights under the law and to judge people based on their merit. Peterson has it right that we should all be more grateful, cause I don't think the world owes anyone a damn thing.
